macOS Sierra 10.12 kills Screenflow 5. What about 6?

Although I realize that macOS Sierra 10.12 is beta software, and so I am not complaining, some of us need to use it.

Anyhow, the 10.12 Beta 3 appears to have killed Screenflow 5 for me.  Recording appears to start, proceed and complete OK.  But when the new .screenflow document appears, it has zero length and no media clips.

Has anyone else had this result?  Is anyone using 10.12 and Screenflow 6 yet?

Alexis Martel ScreenFlow 5 is no longer available through the Mac App Store. It was replaced by ScreenFlow 6 which is Sierra compatible. We are only permitted to update our own web purchased version. Apple's rules, not ours.

The last Mac App Store version was 5.0.6 which was not Sierra compatible. ScreenFlow 5.0.7 from our web site is Sierra compatible. You can fill out the form in my next post if you would like to discuss that option with us.

Don Montalvo you can contact our developers through the contact form.

    ScreenFlow Contact Form

There's no reason to purchase any app twice. We give the customer choice between our web and the Mac App Store version. This doesn't have to do with license transfer to another individual. The App Store requires a new purchase if one want's a to buy new version. Apple's policy.

May I ask how you ended up with a second licensed copy of ScreenFlow if you've been purchasing through the Mac App Store?

  • You understand this is a hassle on several levels for 5 owners who went through the app store. Many here have likely already lost a few hours time - first losing videos that didn't record, then playing around with it trying to fix it only to realize it's broken. Now we have to go through some clunky support process requiring human interaction, waiting to be contacted, and more of my time dealing with support.

I don't care about your technical issues with the app store. That's your problem to work through selling software. But what I have is software that doesn't work, which I only purchased a couple months ago and is now eating up my time dealing with you.

    Irritating dude. Irritating.

Jason Holland I'm sympathetic but this is Apple's policy, not ours. These are not "technical" issues. These are Apple's enforced rules we have no control over. We offer another option through our web purchase. That we have a process for another option is a benefit to you.

I had v4 installed. I upgraded to macOS Sierra. v4 stopped working. I upgraded to v5 to be able to upgrade to v6. Upgrade to v6 didn't work so I bought v6 through the App Store.

App Store was the only way I was able to get from v4 to v6.

Don Montalvo we do have a web upgrade path
    Upgrade to 6

    • ScreenFlow 5 or earlier → ScreenFlow 6: $34

To upgrade ScreenFlow 5 and earlier:

    1. Open ScreenFlow and from the ScreenFlow pull down menu and select "Check for updates"
    2. In the resulting update window, click “Try Now,” and then select “Continue” to download ScreenFlow 6 on your system.
Note: ScreenFlow 6 will not overwrite your existing ScreenFlow application, but will install as a separate application and will function in demo mode until you pay the upgrade fee.
    3. If you do not want to pay the fee to upgrade to version 6, click the “Cancel" button.
    4. Launch ScreenFlow 6, select Purchase > Purchase ScreenFlow Online.
Note: You will now be taken to our secure ScreenFlow Upgrade Store.
    5. Click the "Add to Cart" button and complete the information requested and hit submit.

If you had an issue with the above step our support would work to resolve it.

  • CraigS Ive got an issue.

I can't open  ScreenFlow because ive synced it to my new computer, which my previous computer was a OS X. Now, its got a X on the app, which it starts telling me to update it. This version is ScreenFlow 5. I clicked "Search the App Store" to find ScreenFlow to update, and it said "Item Not Available".

    how to fix?

  • CraigS the process didn't work for me, and apparently I'm not the only one. The only issue I have with Telestream is the EULA not allowing us to transfer a vender purchased license, despite paying yet again for the application.

We can point fingers all day, but at the end of the day the expectation is for a vendor to be fair and just. This experience is not what I'd expect from a vender.

The failed upgrade process resulted in $$$ loss for me and quite likely other customers. The failed upgrade process is what drove me to buy through App Store.

Look, Screenflow is a great product. More so when purchased through App Store in this instance, rather than buying directly from vendor.

I'm writing this (vender purchased license) off as a loss for the customer, and a win for Apple (for a better App Store license model).

Stephen Benasutti  I'm going to guess you've update your computer to Sierra macOS 10.12 and you're using ScreenFlow 5 purchased from the Mac App Store. As previously noted Apple does not allow updates once a new version (ScreenFlow 6) is released.

In order to get the Sierra compatible version of ScreenFlow 5 you have contact our support and they'll explain your options. Fill out the support form and we'll contact you.

Don Montalvo to be clear, the only way to get the Sierra compatible version of ScreenFlow 5 if you've purchased from the Mac App Store is by contacting our support directly to request a refund on the additional purchase. If you already had version 5 purchased from our website and the 5.0.7 update didn't work then you'd contact support to work out the update issue.

Support always fixes these issues. Web purchasers get 5.0.7. App Store purchasers can contact us to move the license to the web version for the update.

Perhaps you should contact support about what lead you to make a second purchase. Support is free.

    The EULA issue is separate.

  • CraigS - the Rich Simpson advice above should be on your Upgrade instructions (if you can't open Screenflow)!! Might save others some time! particularly seeing as its impossible to open a support ticket without a serial number. doh!

  • I might actually return Screenflow to Apple. The poor customer service experience is one reason.

The other reason is one of the community's highest regarded documentation gurus, who recommended ScreenFlow in the past, Is now using Screeny.

If you've purchased the Mac App Store version you do not need a serial number.

Compare to the non Mac App Store version which does require a serial number

  • You will need version 6.1 for ScreenFlow to function properly under Sierra. Are you having difficulty upgrading? That process will vary depending upon where you acquired ScreenFlow (Mac App Store, Telestream Store).

They are compatible so recording should work although, with the trial version, the recording will be watermarked. Do File > New to get the Configure Recording interface and make sure that your display is selected. Then click the red button, record a bit and stop. You should then see ScreenFlow with your recorded material.

James Goodridge and everyone else, you must stay current within your version for Sierra compatibility. ScreenFlow 5.0.7 and ScreenFlow 6.1 work with Sierra.
