Multiple problems with Screenflow these days

I try to edit a video, as I did many times.

2 major problems:

1. When dragging the video-screen to fill the black video window, the video turns green and I don't find a way to return to normal. I started again from zero and at a certain point while editing the second version, the same thing. I have rebooted both, Screenflow and the computer.

2. Photos created in Canva don't stick in the editing window when dragging them in, some do, some don't. I tried with resizing them, jpg and png. Just don't get in.

 

Can anyone help?

     I'm not sure I understand what your are doing can you provide screenshot.

     Again please explain. Perhaps there's a compatibility issue but there's not enough information. JPG and PNG should generally work but their specs aren't clear.
    Perhaps you can link to one so I can look at the file.

    Thanks for answering.

    I send you a screenshot of all.

    You see the green window, it happened after dragging and expanding the content on the lower left dot at the corner-,

    The other screenshot shows the added pictures. The one with the many faces doesn't enter into the frame so I resized it on Canva to "Youtube Thumnail" amd dowmloaded it as png and jpeg, in the same way as I did with the picture which is in the editing field. But for these resized picture (with a white board on both sides) there is no way to get it in the editing field, whatever format I try and after whatever editing I did with them with online editors.

     

    I hope you can understand my problem.

    Adelheid Hörnlein There may be a problem with the zoom file and compatibility. Can you link to it so I can test?

    I'm not sure I understand the problem with the PNG.  I download that and test in ScreenFlow and it works. I can scale it and move it around. It's low resolution so it gets blurry but it does work like any other PNG.

    I'm testing in the current version of ScreenFlow 7.3.

    Mhm, how can I link to a file which is on my computer? It is mp4, it says, and should work. Or do I need to re-convert the file? and then, to What? and Where?

    There's a paper clip icon under the message box you type into in this forum. That allows you to attach files.

    Ah, ok, you mean upload it.

    I tried to upload the file twice, it doesn't work.

    What is or can be a problem with the zoom file?

    I have now the latest version of screenflow and the picture is still green.

    Adelheid Hörnlein You can use DropBox or GoogleDrive and post the link here or include it in a forum private message to me. I suspect there may be an issue decoding the file under some circumstances. I can confirm that by testing the file on my systems.

    I import your file to a project with just a screen recording on my iMac Pro.
    I put recording on my timeline and from the upper right I drag the lower left dot.
    It expands without any problems. Picture looks normal.

    Thank you: At first it worked fine for me, too, I did some editing, cuts etc, and then the piece to the right went green. Once it turned back normal. Dragging from the lower right down it went green again and stayed so. 

    And, in addition, from then on it accepted only certain pics to be dragged into the field, others not, and I cannot see any difference, as they belonged to the same series I had created with Canva.

    Misteries

     

    I am seeing 2 audio-lines in the same track here? I don't have that at all.

    Adelheid Hörnlein If ScreenFlow Preferences is set to Stereo it'll show two lines (dual mono if it's really mono).

    Can you zip and send me a link to the project showing the problems? You can use Dropbox or Google Drive and post the link here.

    Adelheid Hörnlein Thanks for that. Testing your project I find the .mp4 seems to intermittently turn green and ScreenFlow sometimes hangs (beach ball) as well.

    I examined the file in Telestream Switch and notice that there's only one key frame (I Frame) for the entire file. I suspect that's the issue.

     

    Please fill out the support form, include the link to your project and also include my findings that I believe the issue is file compatibility because the .mp4 only has a single keyframe. We'll send you a case number and investigate improving compatibility.

    I just sent your message to the support and hope they can fix the problem. If it is due to the fact that the recording comes from a Zoom conference, it would be VERY useful to fix that generally as I and many people are constantly working with Zoom.

    Adelheid Hörnlein I think a number of people would like to see improved playback in ScreenFlow for Zoom files since it's popular.

    In the meantime, as a workaround, you can re-encode the file from macOS Finder (I know that's awkward though).

  • CraigS Thanks for the idea. I yesterday had a better one, at least for me. I uploaded the video to Youtube and then downloaded it again - and that made it workat least for me. I uploaded the video to Youtube and then downloaded it again - and that made it work.

     

    Before I tried a few online editors, but they are really nothing in comparison to Screenflow - IF IT WORKED AS IT SHOULD!

     Sometimes that can involve more loss of quality than re-encoding with macOS Finder encode feature.

  • CraigS good to know - but I have no idea about the re-encoding. Never came across it yet and only reading these words made me fear that I need to spend more time to learn again something else. It is sometimes really overwhelming what the tech is asking from people like me who are not drawn at all to tech...

    What is that macOS Finder encode feature? Where do I find it and how does it work?

    Adelheid Hörnlein I linked to the the instruction for re-encoding in finder in a previous post. It is much better quality than YouTube which always involves more quality loss.

    I watched the clip now and see that it is not difficult at all. So I will do that in the future. After having clicked there: is there anything which tells you that the videoclip is encoded this way? To understand which clip in the library is encoded this way and which not yet?

    Adelheid Hörnlein  The challenge is that other than the .mp4 extension there's no obvious way for the end user to know how it was encoded. That's why I use Telestream Switch to analyze the file structure. Some MP4 files playback without issue and others exhibit problems as you saw. Sometimes there's patterns when you know the source. I know Zoom files tend to have the same structure and, therefor, the same problem.

  • CraigS Thanks, I didn't know all that. I thought mp4 is clearly defined as opposed to other formats. Learned something more, again.

    In future I will know what to do with the zoom fiels and hope it will work out.

    Adelheid Hörnlein .mp4 is just a container and actually, unlike other codecs, a good part of the mpeg related spec leaves encoding very wide open which is why playback performance can vary widely depending on how recorded.

    is there another solution, than using the re-encode??? I´m in lost! Have the same problem than Adelheid and i always work with zoom videos. I don`t have this problem whit Screenflow 6. When screenflow 8 my work not supportet, i ask me, why i spend money for the upgrade?
