Unacceptable latency with Telestream Audio Capture

I m trying to capture a live performance from the Facetime camera on my iMac while playing playing and singing along to a Logic Pro X track. Ion order to capture all of it I have to switch the audio output preference in Logic Pro to Telestream Audio Capture but as soon as I do, the latency when I play the keyboard is just too much to keep time.

  • Can you post complete specs and workflow and possible an example that shows the amount of latency you're experiencing?

I have a backing track playing in Logic Pro X and am playing a sampled piano along with its in Logic, while;e singing into a mic in input 1 of my Apogee with an audio channel strip in Logic Pro set to that input using Apogee's Direct Monitoring.

I open Screenflow 7.31. and set it to record me from the FaceTime camera,, Audio from the Element 24 for the mic, and record computer audio I get the warning message that to capture both that I have to change the driver in Logic to the Telestream Audio driver, which I do.

As soon as I do when I play my keyboard to play the sampled piano in Logic, there is bad latency, making it unusable.

  • Jay Asher We've made some improvement with audio in ScreenFlow 8. Please download the free trial and test in that.

Is this monitoring or recorded in? It's not clear how you're determining the latency. If it's recorded can you provide visual example? The amount of latency may be important in determining the cause.
    How are you monitoring?

  • Jay Asher How are your headphones connected, Audio cable out, USB, Bluetooth?
It might be good to point a webcam at the keyboard so we can see the latency timing between key hit and sound.

Report the issue but we'll probably need more details to determine the complete audio path from inputs to monitoring.

  • CraigS ,USB, but it is the same through headphones or speakers. And trust me, it isn't complicated. No latency between when I strike the key without the Telestream driver, considerable latency with it. I am already in touch with support, they suggested rolling back to 7.2. Are they actually making it worse? :)

  • Jay Asher Knowing that it happens regardless of monitor path is important. Thanks for that. We've had to make a new driver because Apple is making changes in the OS and hardware. New Macs are using the T2 chip and that impacts audio. We're still working on improvements. The old driver does not work on the new Macs. If 7.2 fixes it then it seems the new driver on older sound chip might be an issue in some cases.

  • Jay Asher For example, I have a new iMac Pro. If I were to use the old driver I can't capture system sound unless I monitor through USB (I use Behringer U-Phoria) because that gives a different hardware path than going through the computer's audio out or internal speakers. Obviously I have to use the new driver but that path is through is through the T2 chip (which obviously isn't in your iMac). The new MBPs are using the T2 chip as well. So you can see the challenge in that Apple has new and old hardware for sound processing.

  • Rolling back to 7.2 worked, the latency problem went away, although the video and audio sync is a tiny bit off.

Any reason to think that Screenflow 8 will do better with this than 7.3?

because there's been improvements over 7.3 with a focus on the new driver. Only way to know is to try. The trial version is free and fully functional. If it's a problem in 8 then you can report it so the developers can investigate.

  • I think at this point I am going to conclude that since 7.2 is working OK for me, if it isn't broken I should not try to fix it :)

  • Jay Asher True for the time being but we'll see if future macOS updates have impact as well. Apple tends to be moving to impede this kind of driver in their security settings.

  • HI, I'm having the same exact issue. Late 2011 Macbook Pro. OS 10.12

I actually purchased Screenflow 8. How do I fix this?

  • Christopher Cruz Make sure the OS is 10.12.6 and ScreenFlow is updated to 8.2.2.
Once you've done that and tested please provide the specifics as I can't troubleshoot a general statement. Keep in mind no one has posted to this thread in 3 months and and the originally referenced version in this thread was 7.3.1 and OS 10.13.6.

ScreenFlow has been updated since then and you are on an older operating system. If you're on 8.x and 10.12.x it may be an unrelated issue even if it has similar symptoms. This makes it difficult for support to follow the thread because you're not using the same version as the others who posted here. Please start new threads if you don't match the original post's version and OS.

  • CraigS Sure, I start a new thread. But it's not my computer. It's definitely ScreenFlow.

  • I also purchased the upgrade to ScreenFlow 8.2.2 and am having latency issues when using Logic Pro X and GarageBand.

It looks like the solution is to downgrade to ScreenFlow 7.something until the issue can be fixed in ScreenFlow 8.

How can I get ScreenFlow 7 installed?

Also how can I get updates on when the latency issue is fixed in version 8?

  • Dennis Maille The latest version of ScreenFlow 7, 7.3.2 uses the same audio driver.
Keep in mind the new audio driver was necessitated by changes in Apple's OS and Computers. Find ScreenFlow 7.3.2 at this link under Previous Versions at the top.

  • Yeah I downloaded 7.3.2 and did encounter the latency issues. Which version should I download so I will no longer have the problem?

I'm getting really frustrated that I paid for the upgrade to 8 as everything was working perfectly for me in the older version I had.

  • Dennis Maille ScreenFlow 6.2.4 will work on High Sierra (but not Mojave) so you can try that if you're not on Mojave.

  • I'm on Mojave. What options exist for that?

    Reply Like
  • Dennis Maille Only 7.3.2 and 8.2.2 as Mojave requires these and that means using the new drivers.

You can report the latency issue as we're investigating improvement but keep in mind that changes by Apple necessitated changes on our end.

Please provide an example of the issue showing how significant the latency is or some other means to indicate exactly how it's impacting you.
