Wirecast crashes when I lock it.

Hi Wirecast,

Whenever I finish a session in my Mac using Wirecast, I hit Command + Control + Q to lock the screen and leave. When I come back, I always find Wirecast crashed.

It happened 100% of my attempts, even if I immediately unlock it again.

Is it a known issue?

System info:

  • macOS Catalina 10.15.2
  • Wirecast Trial version 13.0.2
  • The test machine is a MBP2018 with a quad-core 8th gen i5, with no dGPU. The definitive machine will be a 27” iMac with a 8-core 9th gen i9 and a Radeon Pro 580X.
  • Wirecast Canvas size 1280x720, 30fps
  • AutoLive enabled
  • Virtual webcam running
  • Devices used are the internal webcam, internal microphone, and screen capture.

Please explain further. If you're using other programs at the same time as Wirecast, they may be involved in the crash.

    and screen capture

Which may indicate something else is running that you're capturing.

  • CraigS I will run some tests to try and figure out if the video capture or screen capture could be causing it. But, well, it shouldn’t crash anyway, don’t you agree? It is a Wirecast issue for not dealing with a certain device in the end, isn’t it?

I open Wirecast, click start virtual webcam, use it in a Skype call, end the Skype call, lock the screen. When I unlock it, I see a warning window that Wirecast crashed, offering me to submit a report. I have submitted a couple already.

We can't say for sure. Sometimes the behavior of other programs can impact Wirecast. The cause can also be OS related.

Those may be reports to Apple. Wirecast may crash but that doesn't mean Wirecast is definitely the cause.

Try rebooting the computer and with nothing else running including background programs and programs that start at login, have Wirecast running and not actually doing anything (a blank document, no sources, no streaming, no recording, no virtual camera) and lock the screen and see if it crashes.

  • Hey CraigS !

I am now running Wirecast 13.0.2 on a different device, an iMac 2019 (i9/8gb/580x/512gb) with macOS Catalina 10.15.2.

I noticed Wirecast was not crashing on locking the screen initially, right after I installed Wirecast. Now, for some reason, it is again.

I tried restarting the computer and opening a brand new and empty document with nothing else running. When I locked the screen, or when the screen timed out, it crashed too.

It could have been after installing the virtual camera driver, but I'm not sure. I'm going to try and remove Wirecast completely later and redo the whole process. Do you have any suggestions on this?

    Cheers

Let's see if it's a user setting. Create a New User Admin account and test in that account. That would give you completely fresh Wirecast Preferences and settings as well as for the user account.

If it still happens at least we know it's a system-wide event/setting.
Might there have been a change in a security setting?

  • Steps completed successfully, without crashes when locking the screen:
    Opened a new document
Added video capture (FaceTime HD Camera)
    Added mic capture (Built-in microphone)
    Added Screen Capture
Added System Audio Capture (and installed the driver)
Started and stopped Virtual Camera Out & Virtual Mic Out
Removed shot (Built-in Microphone) and added shot (Blue Yeti mic)
Removed shot (FaceTime HD Camera) and added shot (Logitech BRIO Webcam)
Plugged in iPad and added shot (iPad capture)
Changed shot System Audio Capture (to iPad audio)
    Saved document, removed unused sources

    Installed OneDrive, enabled Files integration
Installed Skype, allowed access to mic and cam

Set keyboard shortcuts, tick Global, attribute shortcuts to shots.

    Locked screen.

Logged back in, and Wirecast had crashed.

Went to Wirecast preferences, Keyboard Shortcuts, unticked "Global" setting box for all my hotkeys. Locked screen. Logged back in, and Wirecast had NOT crashed.

Went to Wirecast preferences, Keyboard Shortcuts, ticked "Global" setting box for just one hotkey. Locked screen. Logged back in, and Wirecast had crashed.

I think we've found the problem.

  • Felipe Ambrosio Absolutely report that. It sounds like an issue we're investigating.

If you can cause the crash again related to Keyboard Shortcuts Global, go to Wirecast Help > Send Support Information and open a ticket and that will gather the crash logs. It'll help us with the fix.
