Sequential shows with a remote..

Hi everyone,

For 25+ years, I would appear on stages all over the world as a keynote speaker; then, Covid. So I built a 'stage' - green screen - in my basement.

I centered all my actions around Ecamm.Live which is a great program - but I might be hitting limits of what I can do and am seriously looking at Wirecast.

My key thing is - I walk, I stand, I wander. I control my 'show' on my own with a Logitech remote that advances through 'scenes' in Ecamm. If you look at the video below, you'll see a little remote in my hand.

I really want to know if I can do this type of thing in Wirecast.

To give you a sense of my studio setup and production stream - visit this one:

Can I do that with Wirecast? I've got a 3 camera setup, multiple scenes; dragging in video/text behind transparent overlays. You can see its pretty sophisticated...

But I really want to know if I can do the type of thing I am already doing.

Another example is here:

and

These are all live-to-tape, so to speak, so I've got the skills. I'm also a hard core computer geek - online since 1982 - so you can throw tech at me.

Thanks

Futurist Jim Carroll

One way that might work is to mirror the Wirecast interface to an iPad.

    • CraigS I tried that with eCamm. Carrying around an iPad is clunky. My remote is small and simple - one button to the next scene...

Jim Carroll I think Logitech discontinued their remotes. StreamDeck works but that's USB tethered. Wirecast does support scripting so if a remote could access scripted commands one might make a custom solution.

This was posted many years ago but would still require using an iPhone or Android phone as the remote. http://www.mikemyers.me/wirecast-control

      This looks interesting

    • CraigS It's not a Logitech TV remote - it's a stage remote like this, most of us use something like this on stage.

Many times I'd also be using one of these on stage. Really all I need is one button to advance.

The support line suggested I explore shortcuts too.

Jim Carroll the device would have to simulate a keyboard shortcut or otherwise trigger a script that would control Wirecast.

You mention ECAMM. If you can explain how it works with that perhaps we can make a feature request to match what it does.

    • CraigS Hi Craig, the device simply emulates a right arrow to advance and left to go back. In Ecamm, I construct a 'show' with a series of scenes. When I go live, I merely use the 'advance' or right arrow button to move to the next scene. Pretty straightforward. The professional Cue-Light system that many AV pros set up for stage events do the same thing - right arrow/left arrow. They are basically built for Keynote or Powerpoint -- simply a right key to advance to the next slide but are effective for me and others in this virtual world. Here's an ecamm shot - I merely have my cursor on the first scene, do my thing, right click to the next scene.

Jim Carroll Thanks but how is the remote communicating with ECAMM? What enables it? Is there  a Bluetooth or Wifi setting in ECAMM that allows remote control

BTW I have a demo of ECAMM. In my case Scenes display on the bottom of the live window and while I see the controls (keyboard commands) in the menu to move from Scene to Scene there's nothing that I see that enables remote control.

It seems the remote may be emulating the keyboard commands. Wirecast allows one to program specific keyboard commands for each shot. The shot order is not sequential except when using a Playlist so one doesn't necessarily "advance" from shot to shot. One simply selects the shot you desire through user programmed keyboard commands. Wirecast can overlay multiple shots so one may need more than one shot (one on each layer so Wirecast can use up to five shots at once).

    • CraigS It's Bluetooth to a USB stick that goes in the Mac. I was playing around with Playlists ; if each shot was in a Playlist and in hold (no autoadvance), then if it linked to these buttons if would seem to the trick.

Jim Carroll That would be an interesting idea. I created the feature request WIRE-19591 and will see how the developers respond.

    • CraigS The devices are pretty cheap and pretty common. $60 would let them get a test from Amazon ... link to device is upthread, but they're pretty standard across the industry. I'm going back to in-person events - on stage in Detroit, Orlando and Brussels in coming weeks, but I still see big opportunities for virtual in my life. Appreciate the support and enthusiasm. And yes, I know developers can always say "no"

Jim Carroll the challenge is there's no Bluetooth control in Wirecast or keyboard shortcuts for some functions so they have to look at both. I know the latter (shortcuts) is of some interest. The former could be useful as well as you know.

Jim Carroll Try the Wirecast 15.1 Beta. You can create keyboard shortcuts for this now. See if it'll work with your controller of choice.

  • Hi Jim, as Craig said, Wirecast is a bit limited in the remote control area. Stream Deck controllers are nice but Wirecasts implementation is poor. It's way behind if you compare it to other options on the market.

I just did a virtual studio setup for a one-man show. I used a skaarhoj micro fly to switch scenes. My client liked it very much. Unfortunately wirecast is not compatible with it.

Send me a PM and I can show you some ways in getting you going.
