ScreenFlow 10: Where did my presets go?

I created a number of presets to style for various video types and they are now gone after upgrading to ScreenFlow 10. How do I get them back?

  • Was this an upgrade from 9 to 10?
    What macOS?
Do you have 9 still installed (you can have both if you put one in a folder in Applications) and open 9 and see if they're still there?

  • Yes, upgraded from 9 to 10, macOS Big Sur 11.4. It offered to keep 9 and I did not do that, but assumed my personal settings would still be retained.

You can download 9 here under Previous Versions and put it in a folder in Applications so you can have both for the time being.

  • I just followed your instructions and installed Screenflow 9 into an application folder called "Screenflow 9". I ran the application and there are no presets listed. Where can I get my presets? I use these so regularly and do not have the settings written down and do not want to go through the effort to re-create them.

Bill Raymond That's odd. Perhaps they were overwritten. I have both 9 and 10 installed and my Styles still exist in 9 even though they don't in 10.

    • CraigS the only thing I can think of is I had 9 and then installed 10 over it. I put 9 in a new folder. I’m really frustrated that this happened. It took a long time for me to put these presets together just to have them deleted. Are they stored anywhere I can copy them?

Bill Raymond We're investigating why they might have been overwritten or whether they might be stored someplace such as ScreenFlow Preferences.

Bill Raymond ScreenFlow 9 has separate preferences than 10 that store the Style presets. They may be overwritten if?

One resets Preferences in ScreenFlow 10 (they will also reset previous versions)
Mac App Store purchase (vs our webstore).

      Can you reproduce the problem?
Build a Style in 9 and overwrite by installing 10 again.

Basically, 10 install otherwise would not overwrite 9 preferences for Style presets in that version.

Bill Raymond Another customer reports 9 Style Presets don't show in 10.
In their case reinstalling 9 brings back the presets which is expected behavior since they are kept in a separate preference setting file. They bought it from our webstore.

Generally, only a Preference Reset in 10 or MAS version might erase them so please do confirm either.

    • CraigS I had already followed your instructions to install 9 in a different folder and the presets are missing still. Now I have no presets in 9 or 10

Bill Raymond Did you purchase from Mac App Store?
Did you use ScreenFlow 10 Reset button?
As stated that would erase the 9 presets.

  • I purchased 9 and 10 from Telestream directly. I do not even know where the reset button is located, so I have to assume I did not.

      Found along this path

Indicating that ScreenFlow 9 and ScreenFlow 10 are separate preferences.
So 10 should not overwrite 9 settings.
This is why reinstalling 9 should bring them back as version 9 preferences (settings) are retained for that version.

Yes it's deliberately not easy to get to to prevent such accidents.

  • I definitely did not do that. Aren’t the presets just in a json, PLOST, or XML file I can copy over?

Bill Raymond  plist can't be copied over in this case. Theoretically possible in some cases though depending on the information and changes in the app. So it can be investigated and considered with some variables.

  • I guess that is it then. This is a serious letdown and I wish I did not upgrade so quickly and Telestream tested all the core features before releasing. Had I known an upgrade would delete my settings, I simply would not have not updated or waited

Bill Raymond While settings in 9 may not transfer to 10, they generally would not delete the settings as they exist in 9. Version 10 preferences don't overwrite version 9 preferences where the settings are stored. I'm not sure why yours are missing but other users confirm reinstalling 9 retains the settings in 9 when using our webstore version.

  • Speaking with a technical support representative at Telestream, it turns out I could get my SF 9 presets back in SF 9, but I could not install the product in a different folder. You had me put SF 9 in a sub-folder under Applications. Once I put it in the primary Applications folder, they came back. The problem remains that you cannot move your presets from one version to another, like SF9 -> SF10, which means lots of manual work re-creating them again.

Bill Raymond Hmm, I always keep my "previous" version of ScreenFlow in a folder within Applications and see the Style presets.

  • So still no solution to this?  A major software package that supports presets, and yet doesn’t allow the user to migrate those presets into newer versions ... extremely disappointing   I have over 40 presets, and every version of screenflow I have to spend hours recreating all of them. I still find it hard to believe this hasn’t been solved.  This shouldn’t be happening.  Just a matter of coming up with a solution (keep them in their own preference file that stays consistent from release to release, add an importer option that will pull them out of the old preference file and put them in the new preference file ... certainly those are doable).  Wondering if the developers realize how big of a PITA this is.

Bill Raymond Yes the engineers are hoping it'll be in a 10 update. They certainly understand the priority.
