HLS steaming (WWDC announcement)

Apple just announced low latency HLS streaming at WWDC 2019. They claim latency <2s. Would be great if Wirecast support HLS. Much cheaper and easier to scale than RTMP...

  • Low latency HLS is not an encoding and first-mile technology it is a last-mile delivery technology.  Meaning you have to send the stream from Wirecast to be ingested to a CDN or Streaming Server Such as Wowza Streaming Engine.  The CDN or Streaming server takes that stream and allows it to be delivered to end-users with different technologies such as RTMP, HLS, Dash, and eventually Low Latency HLS.

Wirecast does not need to support Low Latency HLS at all because Ingest servers like Wowza Media engine and CDN's won't accept it as an input because that is not what it is designed for.  RTMP and SRT are designed for the first mile ingest.

Many people have suggested that Wirecast needs to support SRT for first mile delivery to the Streaming Servers and CDN But that has not made the road map yet, unfortunately.

We already support it in our hardware live stream appliance.
There are CDN/Servers supporting HLS and MPEG-Dash ingest.
