Masking tools in ScreenFlow feature request

I'm working on a new set of tutorials for creating advanced call outs, and have found the lack of good solid masking tools in ScreenFlow to be a real limitation.  In a future release would love to a new Masking tool set that:

1. allows users to create masks based on common primitive shapes: ellipse, rectangle, polygon

2. draw mask feature.  Draw using bezier curves a shape for the masks.

3. basic masking features: feather edge, opacity of mask, invert mask, apply stroke to mask, gradient masks (linear and radial), rotate mask

4. load b&w or greyscale image as masks.

Right now users can use the crop tool to create a basic mask, or overlay solid color in a compound clip and use the chroma key to kinda sorta make this work, but none of these are ideal solutions.

Also, please fix the crop tool in the sidebar bug.  Currently you can enter quick crop mode on the canvas by holding down control, but if you use the sliders you can only crop in up to 400 pixels in a single direction. You can enter a value into the crop box and crop a side further than 400 pixels, but the slider should simply auto adjust it's values to the dimensions of the currently selected object.

Also, please enhance the basic call out tools in the never update to ScreenFlow. The current tools are quite limited.  Having even basic drawing functionality like in Keynote, to draw more types of primitive shapes, including bezier curves would be a really nice enhancement to the product.

Hi there, It would be fantastic if the upcoming ScreenFlow 9 get the simple shape video masking feature. 馃憤 Any chance?

CraigS Can I create a full circle video on the bottom corner by adding a square video then max out the corner radius of it? What do you think, is this hack doable?

Is the source your webcam? There's one method for that.
Is the source imported? You can import Apple ProRes4444 with Alpha and the alpha channel should be recognized so you can create that externally.

  • CraigS are you suggesting the workaround is to capture webcam video separately outside of ScreenFlow?  and then import it with alpha added into ScreenFlow?

Michael Helmke  Whatever you import it has to have the mask already.

  • got it.  so not really an option that makes sense for ScreenFlow.  馃槃馃槈

I'm looking forward to this feature being eventually added natively to ScreenFlow.  I would pay for the version 9 upgrade in an instant if this one feature was added...

Michael Helmke This would be a significantly valuable feature as the workarounds are a bit awkward.

    Like
  • valuable to the extent that it would give Screenflow parity with many competitors such as Loom.  really, if I have to consider trying one of the workarounds, I'll simply stop using Screenflow.

I'm not sure why you are talking about the value of the feature.  a circular video bubble is something people are going to expect as a basic feature more and more now...

Michael Helmke You can make a webcam into a circle now by using rounded corners and crop. It's not quite the same as a mask though.

    • CraigS I tried this but couldn't get an actual circle, basically all I got was an oval. Was the video a square in the first place, then rounded?

Gary Rozanc The numbers may vary depending on the size of the source. Read this.  Video 16:9.

Gary Rozanc It is a bit finicky since it depends on the source frame size and then numbers change aren't uniform and we are looking at how we might make it easier.

  • CraigS while it isn't an arbitrary mask... it is EXACTLY what I was looking for.  granted I have to figure out the circle by hand but it is a suitable work around for now.  THANK YOU for pointing this out.  I had not noticed the *corner round* slider before.  I can confirm that I made one of my talking head tracks into a round circle and it is suitable for what I was looking for.  Yay.

Michael Helmke We should have a simple circle tool but I thought it was important to show we do have tools that can shape the presenter.

    ...

Here's a diagram to help further explain. We can already get the circle easily:
    example: https://vimeo.com/386862993/c421148eb9

I'm not sure if ScreenFlow should be responsible for the masking/shape tool necessarily... and instead - could possibly allow us to give them an SVG shape to do the work? This could be used as a transition as well.

Here's an example of how we do this in HTML and CSS (with SVG for the path) - https://css-tricks.com/clipping-masking-css

  • Scrolling through this thread, it seems that we are no closer to getting a circular masking tool than we were two years ago (am I wrong?). I appreciate that there might be work-rounds, but this goes against one of the main attractions of Screenflow 鈥 its simplicity. I also understand that developing and maintaining Screenflow is a huge job, so congrats for that.

I'm just adding my voice to the clamour as requested earlier in this thread and elsewhere. Green screen is great, but for quick additions to illustrated tutorials etc not ideal. The current rectangle increasingly looks dated, and a circular talking head would look much cleaner and, dare I say it, less amateurish.

I'm a big fan of Screenflow, but my main aim is to produce preofessional-looking content routinely. I can do that now but this one refinement would make a huge difference to my work and my satisfaction. with the results.

Barry Winbolt Please vote if you would like this feature. The developers are looking at vote totals, not comments. There have been 13 votes in almost two and a half years.

  • Thankyou, will do. I wasn't aware that I can vote, I hadn't spotted that feature.

  • I鈥檓 hoping that the developers are not only looking at the vote tallies but also reading the threads of topics where there has been at least some upvoting.

Sometimes a feature/enhancement that only a handful of people may upvote here is actually be a great feature to implement and quite apropos to the product. Being so tuned to the product, the devs would be able to tell that from the conversation more than simply the upvotes.

Working in software development myself, I see it often where most users may not request a particular feature (or even know/believe a company is open to the feedback) but those users are thrilled when a fitting and needed feature is introduced. In fact sometimes it even causes users to appreciate the software even more because they feel the devs are keeping an eye on current needs of an industry and anticipating their users鈥 needs.

The developers focus their time on coding. We present the vote totals. If you would like to communicate with the developers directly please fill out the ScreenFlow Feature Request support form. You will be sent a case number which will allow you to communicate using the case number as reference.

  • This feature appears to have the most upvotes! Does that mean it is now a priority? Not having this feature is making it difficult to some very basic, very expected things unless the guidance is to use Screenflow to record but then do editing in other applications

I suspect the developers are keenly aware of the interest as I have reported its high ranking.
