scrolling Text is behaving like video clips, but with less flexibility

Hello Wirecasters: Although this is a text issue, i posted it here in this category, since the behaviors are similar.  when i try to trigger text shots that have words that scroll / non-stop / right to left... apparently these can never be started from the beginning once re-triggered. There is no option (and needs to be) a checkbox option to either “remember position even when not live”… to either elect to resume from where the text left off, just like video files… OR to un-check and to NOT remember position, and therefore start from the beginning, each time it is re-triggered.  This happens with either .txt files for regular text shots.  I hope that i am merely missing something(!) (please?), since i have spent some time experimenting, and i do not see a work around for this.

Also, when i close and reopen a wirecast document, all of my text shots with scrolling are corrupted, and will just repeat the first 3 or 4 words in a loop. the work-around is that i need to click into the text of each shot and put the cursor at the end; at which point it fixes the clip. but this is way too much work for documents with many such text shots.

any help appreciated, thanks!

Greg

  • Can you post an example of the source text and what you see when you transition to the shot live?

  • hey Craig, i fly overseas tomorrow night (and was hoping to stream something tomorrow morning before i did, if problem #1 or #2 had a quick solution); but will have to wait til i land back in the US to help with diagnosis.  (can't imagine i'd be the only one having these scrolling text bugs?) And there are actually 3 different bugs i'm encountering. I must (briefly) add: Triggering a scrolling text clip on layer one will restart video on layer 2, 3 or 4 (if "remember position even when not live" is unchecked); just like triggering a video clip would do.

  • hey Craig, I can tell you that clearing the layer makes no difference with these bugs unfortunately.... More info when i get back home and sleep off the jet-lag :)

  • OK, i made a quick demo of the 3 different bugs i'm experiencing with scrolling text. (Please excuse the shaky iPhone camera) thanks! https://youtu.be/xGVLrcccH5k

  • Thanks for those examples.

Do fill out the report form and link to the examples you provided. It's a good explanation because you show it works and explain how you would like it to work.

  • OK, i filled out the report and i'm in touch with Support.. just sent them a ScreenFlow. Out of the 3 different issues, the one that i cannot find any kind of work-around for is the text scrolling needing to start from the beginning (rather than just random).  Is there anybody else out there that uses text scrolling who has either encountered this issue OR has it working properly??  Thank you...

  • solar sonic do ask support if they have a workaround for that as well.

  • Well i just got the details about the new 7.6 version upgrade for Wirecast; however, reading the “fixes and enhancements” in the release notes, there is no mention of the 3 different bugs that i carefully documented for everybody last month. These bugs have kept me from broadcasting, since it is quite clumsy and time-consuming to implement the work-arounds for 2 of the issues, and support agrees that one issue has no workaround at all. I hesitate to update to 7.6, since it might bring entirely new problems, but i'd imagine that if they fixed the scrolling text issues, or media file restart issues, then they'd make mention of this in “fixes and enhancements”??
(Maybe i can test on another machine...)

  • update: i was advised by support that they believed the update to 7.6 fixes these problems.  so i did the update and spent some time experimenting, and it does NOT fix any of the problems.  in fact, one of the two work-arounds is now gone, and the program sometimes crashes when editing text shots!

  • solar sonic Using your case number, email support with examples exhibiting the issues in 7.6. There was some work done related to text but there may be more work to do. RSS text feeds, for example, should now work.

  • Indrek Viiret Given it hasn't appeared in the most recent update, do follow up with your case number and let them know you'd still like to see it implemented. Hearing continued interest, even if it would otherwise seem obvious, is good.

  • CraigS  Yes i'm in touch with support, and yes, there appears to be LOTS more work for them to do in regards to scrolling text.  Indrek Viiret  spells it out pretty clearly, what is needed (needs to be treated like a video shot).  without features like this, then scrolling text would remain random in terms of its start points and therefore mostly un-usable.  Meanwhile, what is this new checkbox: "Shutdown when not live" ??  Could not find it in the manual, thanks!

  •  solar sonic  We continue to work on scrolling text.

Have you tried Shutdown when not live with a scrolling title?

  • CraigS Yes, i played around with that feature to see if it might fix problems... but with very unpredictable results.  Bottom line: Does not fix the problems (and not sure what its function might be?  "Shutdown" what exactly?)  Thanks...

  • CraigS  OK, regarding "Shutdown when not live" : This comes in handy when doing an image carousel, since its gives the ability to start again at the beginning of the slide show when the shot is triggered live again.  However, when  i have this checked with scrolling text shots, when i then choose the shot and/or take the shot live, the text does NOT appear in either the Preview or Live window. So i'm guessing that either 1) this feature is not fully developed for scrolling text yet, or that 2) i'm experiencing a bug; or that 3) there is some practical application for this feature that i don't understand yet.  ie) Clicking the box to have it turn off the scrolling text in the Preview window like you demonstrate... Unless you could then immediately or later proceed to bring the shot live and have it be visible, then i'm not sure how this would be of value(?).  Attempting to bring it live with this box checked results in nothing,... just a blank screen.

I spent some hours experimenting, checking to see if this feature might allow any work-around for the "scrolling text not starting from the beginning bug", and for a moment it seemed like i might be on to something, since the text will (sometimes) start at the beginning,, however, the text does not start to reveal from the right side (with right to left scroll option), rather it starts in an already full screen situation, which means that your first words in the sentence disappear too quickly for people to be able to see them before they're scrolled away. also, the checking/unchecking and preview/live steps involved in trying to trick things into this work-around are way too cumbersome for practical use, so,... Long-story/short: There's no work-around.

Also, the "premature looping of scrolling text bug" is rampant (worse than in version 7.5) while attempting these workarounds for the "scrolling text not starting from the beginning bug".  So i forwarded all of this to support, so the engineers can assess (though i must think that they're probably aware)...

I just wish that Support didn't put my hopes up by telling me that various text issues were addressed in 7.6.  The release notes do mention RSS text, but i was apprehensive (and asked specifically) about scrolling text being addressed, since i would think that would've been mentioned in the release notes if that was the case. Well, Support led me to believe that there were other text improvements in 7.6, and i should try things out. So unfortunately I wasted hours of precious time discovering zero usable improvements to scrolling text.

I wish there was better news to report

    Cheers

    Greg

  •  solar sonic Thanks for your honest and thorough testing and sending this to support. They're still working in this area but getting user feedback is important since it can help them see the intended use cases.
