Displaying Keynote slides over Zoom with Wirecast

Hi,

I'm evaluating a demo version of Wirecast for education use over Zoom, using a Mac.

Mostly things seem good but I have an issue with Keynote, which I need to display slides from a big and complex pack (not something that I can convert into another form!).

If in Keynote I Play Slideshow in Window (ideal as I use a single external ultra wide display and need to see other applications whilst sharing) it displays successfully to other Zoom users.

However, if I exit that mode (for example to edit a slide), Screencast defaults to sharing my entire display. This is not ok – (1) for seamless presentation and info security reasons and (2) because it is not quick to reconfigure the Screen Capture Properties on the fly for the Shot to again be able to display slides.

Does anyone know if there is a solution to this?  Many thanks!

Andrew

  • You're using Zoom and Keynote on the same external monitor or on two external monitors?
Do you have two separate Screen Captures set up?
    Is each set to Window?

How do you have Keynote setup?
    For example:

Please describe in a way someone can match your setup and settings.

  • Zoom (sorry no call but the principal should hold)
    Keynote Play Slideshow in Windows
    Wirecast ScreenCapture Zoom Window
    Wirecast ScreenCapture Keynote Window
Go from Keynote Play back to Edit mode.

  • Hi Craig,

Thanks so much for the swift reply.

    Set-up

I have a single external monitor (and my laptop closed). Everything is on one display – ideal for me.

I just have one screen capture set up – for my Keynote slides. (I'm using my camera to appear in front of these slides.) I'm just wanting to stream to Zoom; there's no need for me to capture Zoom's window and no recording is required.

Keynote is set up exactly as you show – via Play Slideshow in Window.

Thanks for the GIF.  It's a bit hard to tell where the sequence starts and ends, but aside from capturing the Zoom window, I think that mimics what I see.

    Problem

Apologies – I did rather mis-explain the problem. If I briefly exit Keynote's Play Slideshow in Window mode (e.g. to edit a slide) Wirecast's screen capture freezes at whatever was displayed when I exited Play Slideshow in Window mode, even when I've restarted this mode and tried to carry on presenting. To continue presenting, I need to click the Shot for Keynote, navigate to Screen Capture Properties, click Configure, select Keynote in the drop-down box and click OK.  Not very easy when presenting...

I attach a GIF showing this all happening, which I hope helps.

    Kind regards.

    Andrew

Andrew Since you have internal and external monitor might you try running Keynote by itself on the external monitor and doing a Screen Capture Window and see if it continues to capture going from Slideshow to Edit to Slideshow?

Andrew Seeing if developers can improve this WIRE-18751

That's because that window has "ended' and can't be restarted short of doing what you're doing. By going out of that mode the window you were capturing no longer exists and therefore needs to be captured again when you go back to that Keynote mode. You could try Newtek NDI Scan Converter (it's free) to screen capture the Keynote and see if that behaves better.

  • CraigS  Thanks so much for the replies. I feared the window 'ending' was the reason. I guess it's the clicking required to repair the link that is the issue so if it can be somehow streamlined, fantastic!

I just got an Elgato Stream Deck and it'd be neat if I can program a button to share Keynote smoothly!

I did consider running Keynote on the laptop display but two alternate issues make this tricky:

    (1) In Keynote's Play Slideshow in Window mode, only since the last Keynote release, the window aspect ratio is fixed and different to the MacBook Pro, so sharing the display adds a big chunk of desktop too. It looks awful.

    (2) Playing Keynote full screen takes over all other displays with the next slide, presenter notes etc. – which would obscure Wirecast, Zoom and other apps! I've previously searched for ways to control that but think it cannot be prevented.

I know I could use a separate Mac with Wirecast's Remote Screen Capture, but that's a very expensive workaround...

Thanks for the Newtek suggestion; I'll take a look at that too. But fingers crossed the developers will find a solution!

Andrew Can you use Play Slideshow in Window mode on external monitor. If you use Screen Capture Monitor you can crop out the stuff you don't need (desktop).

  • CraigS  Good point – thanks for that! It's not quite as slick to use the laptop for slides (I have an Ultrawide external display, partly to keep everything readily accessible on one monitor and 'head up' towards the camera) – but it could be a good fallback.

  • I recently tried to switch between two keynote decks and ran into a similar issue, though I was using a 2nd monitor, as full screen took over both monitors.  Keynote has a web view that can be controlled from a Mac or iPhone and I am going to try that since when you leave “present in window” mode you have to recreate the window share from Wirecast after restarting the presentation.

Wirecast manual mentions exporting a keynote deck to movie and being able to navigate slides from within Wirecast using the movie, but this doesn’t seem to be a thing at all. Either Wirecast no longer supports it or Keynote changes removed the possibility.

Please give me the page number that explains this in Wirecast 14.2 User Guide.

Probably for the same reason previously stated regarding capturing.
    We continue to investigate.

  • Going back to the keynote movie, I must have been looking at 13.1 for Mac manual. It is in there on page 80 but not in 14 Mac Manual.  I do suspect this is a feature that was removed from Keynote.

Chris Tennant Likely due to changes in Keynote and changes we made in Wirecast, that this was dropped. I'll see if I can find more details on this.

Chris Tennant Developers says changes made by Keynote and Wirecast mean it can't be implemented. The feature itself was actually dead long before Wirecast 13.x but only removed it from the user guide much later.
