Audio is not sync with video (Wirecast 13.0.2)

Greetings. I am using Wirecast 13.0.2 for live streaming. For some reason, when I am broadcasting my audio is faster than video. If anyone could provide me with some suggestions on how to fix this, it would be appreciated.

I'm now using 4 wired iPads and one NDI iPad and no other scenes and it still hovers at 80% CPU usage

The sources may well be stressing the CPU. If Activity Monitor indicates that's all Wirecast that could be the case.

What might be best is a four-input HDMI (or SDI is better. Magewell card may be better than Blackmagic)  PCIe card in a PCIe to Thunderbolt chassis.  Uncompressed video is less stress on the CPU.

  • CraigS Hey Craig - thanks.  I realize that a hardware system would be great but, as this is a hobby, I'm trying to keep expenses down.

I did, however, have a good night as I figured out how to massage everything so the CPU didn't overload.  Might be better to put that info in a different thread.  I haven't checked on the audio lag version. After trying several apps and NDI cameras for the iPads I think I have it figured out.  Please let me know if you'd like me to write something up for other people having a similar CPU overload issue.

  • Billy Hulting Just another tip to reduce CPU overload. I figured out that you should stop in the settings menu the live rendering of your tracks as this also costs about 5 - 20% of CPU in my case (4GHZ Apple). So perhaps this could do the trick for you? Regards

Given your workflow, it would definitely be worthwhile to write something up.

  • Carsten Bock  0 that sounds like it would help but I can't find a "settings" menu Except "Output Settings" (and the option you mention doesn't seem to be there) or anything in the user manual about Live Rendering.  Can you be more specific as to exactly where that setting is?

I'm not quite sure what he's referring to either. There's preference shot display settings with live icons otherwise I'm not sure what "live renderings" are being referred to. There's no "settings" menu per se.

  •  Sorry - i have not every menu title in my brain and am on a german interface. So it is in the settings menue at this subcategory. It seems that this setting does not only affect the GPU but also the CPU. I noticed while livestreaming a reduction of 5% - 20%  depending on the shots i have in the layers. So in my case i had mainly videos (30 - 50 at a count) and some live cameras (4-8). So i noticed in every of my wirecast files the same behavior that the CPU usage went down at the moment i stopped that live rendering.  Hope it will help you!

  • Thanks Everyone for your comments in this tread. i spent a lot of money on Wirecast Pro and now I need to consider OBS.

Craig, I have been having audio and sync issues with Wirecast Pro since I purchased it in January.  This is a REAL issue for Wirecast that is frustrating for the end user.  I can't even record the stream because it causes the CPU to excel.

  • Carsten Bock Disabling Live Audio meters can also help lower CPU/GPU use.

  • Regina Mays We're working on the sync issues as part of our work with the public beta 13.2.

Sync issues don't cause the CPU to go up. Rather, high CPU can cause sync issues. We always recommend to keep CPU lower than 60% and never allow it to pass 80%.

  • CraigS Hi Regina.  To get the five iPad cameras going I had to push it up to a little over 80%.  That's better than the 97% it had been running earlier.

BUT - I got a new Mac Mini with as much speed as it has and with six iPads it never even gets to 35%.   I have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that a fully blown MacBook Pro couldn't handle it but I'm sure there is something in the architecture that made a difference.  It's such a huge difference though.

I'll send the specs in the next comment.

  • CraigS Hi Regina.

Here are the laptop specs (they are at the top of this thread but pasted here again anyway). The difference from then to now is I'm using Restream.io and they are sending to both destinations - Facebook and YouTube

    MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016)

    2.9 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7

    16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3

    Wirecast 13.1.3

For cameras I'm using five of the iPad Mini 4 connected through a local network.

My upload speed during my last broadcast was 18.9Mps

I stream a live jazz series (Covid-19 safe practices) from my Studio.

    I stream to YouTube using the setting "Facebook 720p30 (4Mbps) X264 H264"

And also to YouTube using the setting "YouTube 1080p30 X264 Maximum (6Mbps)" Seems I should have headroom for these two streams.

Audio is set to a bitrate of 128 at 48K (hate to go lower because the livestream is about music).

Audio comes in viaUSB from a mixer (audio is mixed in Pro Tool HD on a separate computer)

When I turn on the Activity Monitor is say Wirecast is using 121.7% in the CPU% column. Oh Look - it just jumped to 355.1% (and I'm not even streaming!) This seems wrong.  :-D Here are the stats right now:

     Process Name=Wirecast    CPU%=355.1    CPU Time=1:19:55.94    Threads=126    Idle Wakeups=219    % GPU=31.9    GPU Time=33:14.48    PID=4270

    The new Mac Mini is:

    Mac Mini (2018)

    3.2 Ghz 6-core Intel Core i7

    32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4

    I hope this helps.

I haven't tested the sync issues yet - it is my next step but if you are right then the lower CPU drain may resolve it.

Thank you all for your help!

     - Billy

  • CraigS I forgot one thing.  I'm now using NDI HX Camera on the iPads.  I tried Wirecast Go and OBS Camera but they didn't work nearly as well and both made the CPUY work harder than the NDI app.

  • Billy Hulting thank you.  I’m going to check out Restream.  I read a little bit about it several months back.  I went into information overload.  I am a novice at this so between Wirecast and it’s issues with streaming, trying to get the live feed through the website, Dacast, Vimeo, and graphic subscriptions it became way too much.  I live steamed out church service on Sunday and I had no issues BUT I didn’t record.  Trying to do a process of elimination Wirecast.  It’s not good because I can’t afford to do this on Sundays.

@ Craig I have put in several tickets on this.  Robert with Telestream is aware.  He did a remote access into my system to see the behavior and the CPU did it with him.  The CPU increases then decreases .  Wirecast has a lot of bells and whistles but you really can’t use them all.  I have the latest Wirecast Pro installed.  I should be able to record.  My output settings are Dacast and Facebook Live.  I still need to add our YouTube account.  But I can’t keep the sync strait or record.

  • Regina Mays Regina Mays Hi regina, i read about your issues that i also have. So here another tip to your machine. You should add another bit of RAM to it. I used Wirecast with 24 GB of RAM and added another 8 so on 32 it run much more reliable but even with that amount of ram i had those annoying audio out of sync issues with every of my streams but one. Be Lucky you got answer from the support - i wrote some tickets and nobody ever came back on them .

    Good luck!

    • Carsten Bock hi, I can add RAM, but it sounds like you are still having sync issues with the additional memory.  I decided not to record the last service and the live stream worked great.  Sad I can’t record the streams.

  • Carsten Bock I can check on your tickets if you post the case numbers.

  • Regina Mays CPU issues can be encoder issues or input decode issues (depending on the sources). If it's specific to recording, recording MOV uses less CPU than MP4 (due to the difference in codecs) otherwise using the same encoder for streaming and recording so the encoder is only being used once for two functions.

  • Regina Mays Yes i added the RAM and got a better performance and (don`t know exactly why) i little less CPU use. But indeed i had those out of sync issues while only livestreaming and livestreaming and recording. So i wrote a ticket (that got never answered), tried all the ideas that i found here in the forum and lastly switched to OBS to see if i still have with the exact same setup those issues. And OBS did it right out of the box - recording + livestream over 3 hours with no sync issues. Even i would like to stay with wirecast i will no longer put my lifetime in searching for reasons why it does not work correct with audio. As you did a correct livestram just use the record to disc of youtube and download your file - that is another (even not so perfect quality) way to get your recording later on.

    • Carsten Bock thanks Carsten for this information.  I intend to go back and try OBS.  The other thing to note is it’s FREE.  Time researching, putting in tickets and going back and forth about the sync issue with Wirecast is time wasted which equates to dollars for me.    I’m going to test the bandwidth like Craig mentioned today and see what happens.

Regina Mays We are addressing some sync issues through the public beta state of Wirecast 13.2. You may want to try the next public beta coming after the current one as well.

Regina Mays Here it is. Post any response to that in the Beta Discussion forum as the developers read that since it's a work in progress.
