Smooth Transition Issues

The smooth transitions with media files is unusable as ALL layers fade to black during the transition, not simply the deselected layers.

  • Matthew Potter That black issue is specific to Multi-viewer correct?
    I've seen that as well.

  • CraigS It is not. It is on the live output too… both the actual recording / streaming as well as the live view.

I'm not seeing it there for me.
When you use Smooth Transition you have to match layer order if you are using multiple shot layers within a shot.
If camera (or media file) is on a shot layer it should be on the same shot layer in the subsequent shot.
Give you simplest example, one shot to another, and I'll try to reproduce it.

Place your camera on layer 4, bug on layer 1 and lower thirds on 2 or 3… Then try again keeping the camera live and only using cut or smooth to show and hide media files (while they are set to "hold" after they complete).

  • Matthew Potter Thanks for the sources.
Tested and it's exactly as you describe. It's as if the media files will go off and on even when they shouldn't be involved in the transition.

Consider it confirmed. Do report and link to the videos.

  • CraigS Received a followup today about it being submitted and sent the files. I have another one I’ll be submitting today about hiding a sub-layer using the eye and the whole show turning black… yay… and just before a big event tomorrow.

  • Matthew Potter Do post a separate thread for that and include examples as I suspect you will.

  • CraigS Oh, believe me. It will be… thanks Craig. Each time you’re able to confirm, it helps for the submission of the bug. It means that it’s not a one-off and I’m not crazy… okay… more crazy than normal.

  • Matthew Potter I've been having some issues also with items inside my playlist... sometimes one of the videos does not transition to the next one and stays in black screen so i have to manual select the following clip... i guess it might has to do with "smooth" transition... changing to crossdisolve next time... i hope it works...

  • Hy Matthew Potter my name is Roge and have the last versions of Wirecast uptdate 13.3. I have exactly the same problem as you, when I make a "smooth" transition between 2 shoots example 2 cameras, also chain with the layer below, in many cases "black" or if for example it is a video or a graphic, it is seen and it is strange. Have you managed to solve the problem? Thanks.

The current version is 14.3.4. Please update and test in a new blank document as issues might carry from older documents in some instances.

You probably should use a Dissolve in your case. Smooth is better used with multi layered shots in which you'd like the layers to change position in some fashion.

If you have an issue and an example with steps to reproduce in Wirecast 14.3.4 we can troubleshoot it. I don't see any reports specific to Smooth transition in recent versions so we'd need details.

  • I have been noticing a similar problem with the Smooth transition type. What we notice is that when we have a layered shot and go from a smaller inset to a full screen version of the same shot, the shot will basically fade from black instead of simply resizing itself. you can see this in the example of taking shot F from inset to full screen. Going from full screen to inset looks correct but anytime we go from a smaller picture to a larger, where we would expect to see a simple resize of the image, it actually fades from black and reveals the entire back layers (which looks very unprofessional). I am using the latest version 15.0.3

    • Rich Rogers I did discover that you have the option to change Smooth Transition Properties for every element in the layer. I did try that and it revealed to me what I believe the problem is. When clip F  is zooming in from the multi shot layer with shot A to its full screen position, it is coming in behind all of the other layers rather than from on top (which is where it is positioned in the multi shot layer).

Rich Rogers In a multi-layer shot you should keep the layer order the same in the source and destination shot. In other words, if layer 2 is moving then you want it to be layer 2 in both shots.

    • CraigS Yes, I get that I think. But if my shots are layered as such, should it work?

      Like
    • Rich Rogers Or does it count layers from the bottom layer to top? So "F" would be layer 1 in one shot and layer 5 in the other? If that is the case, is there an easy solution? Build "dummy" layers under the single layer shot to make it equal 5 layers?

Rich Rogers It's top to bottom. It's possible you may need "dummy" layers because going to the second shot those other layers are going to "pop" off since they have nothing to transition to.

    • CraigS Yes, I've been noticing that. I also tried to simply duplicate the layers behind and copy them to the full screen layer but they seems to move in the background also which is very distracting. I'll try to create basically blank layers behind and see what I get.

Rich Rogers Depending on the effect you're going for, you can just duplicate the shot and move the top layer.

Basically, with Smooth transition, the layer must go from someplace to someplace (they could be no movement at all with some layers.

Another tricky part is getting one layer to move in front of another. You can't change layer order so the layer has to be on top of both shots if you want it to end on top.

  • As I was working in Wirecast yesterday working through some of these issues I had a moment of epiphany and suddenly it clicked. I now understand a lot more about how the layers interact and how the Smooth Transition Properties panel interacts with all of the elements. There are still a few pieces that don't work as I would expect or like, but everything is certainly more manageable and these smooth transitions look much more professional than they originally did. Thanks CraigS for the assistance!

Rich Rogers You're welcome of course. The Smooth Transition is certainly a bit tricky. Perhaps we should consider doing a tutorial on it.

    • CraigS I think that is a great idea. The tutorials are great but many users could probably use a deep dive on some of the more complicated procedures. It would have certainly helped me get to where I am now. I have a long history of video editing and live switching but Wirecast is a bit of a mix of the two.
