Green screen..no screen recording after Mac OS Catalina update

Hello. I am really not very tech savvy. I've been using my Screenflow for years, and I just did the Mac OS Catalina update a few days ago. Now my Screenflow won't record my screen. After I finish recording, the audio is there, but just a green block is where the screen video should be. Can anyone help?

I'm on a MacBook Pro 2018. macOS Catalina 10.15. and using Screenflow 8.

Is there a place on Mac to allow for screen recording that I'm unaware of?

Thanks for any help!

Jeff McCall Yes Catalina requires more permissions for things like screen recording. Given that the security issues are not specific to our products it's important to learn how Catalina controls access.

I have the same problem. System Preferences already has Screenflow checked for Camera, Microphone, Screen Recording, and the helper app is checked for Accessibility. Plus, every time I select record, a pop up asks me to grant access to record the screen.

OK, I shutdown the computer and restarted. Now it works. Should have tried that to begin with.

Ron Riggs Good to hear it's working. Sometimes the OS does some things in the background on boot to fix or set things.

Amiee Mueller Good to hear. Catalina does require the user to do more due to it's increased security measures.

Gary from MacMost, who uses ScreenFlow for his tutorials, talks about the Security features in Catalina, including giving access permissions.

  • Same problem for me. I uninstalled and reinstalled and never got prompted for security settings for screen sharing. I believe that's the problem

Fred Kufner It seems the prompt is intermittent and if you don't see it after installing, Catalina provides no way to add it later. We're working on the fix.
When you uninstall, reboot, then install, then reboot and then try starting ScreenFlow.

Another set of steps to follow:

    1. Restart your machine and open a single item, Apple System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy Tab
    2. Open ScreenFlow > New Recording Tab, make sure "Record Desktop From" is checked
    3. Select the "record button". This is where a message from your OS should show up to the affect of "ScreenFlow would like to record your desktop".  Part of the nuance here is that message may not "come to the front" so you may have to move any screens around to make sure the message is not blocked by another window.
    4. If all that works, your will be adding permission for ScreenFlow to Record Your Desktop, and look for the "Screen Recording"  icon in the list on the left-hand column.
    5. You will be asked to Quit ScreenFlow, but the recording 'in progress" will not be stopped by quitting ScreenFlow, stop this recording and discard it.

Fred Kufner Sometimes the prompt permission prompt is behind the Configure Recording window.

Try uninstall, reinstall again and when you get the Configure Recording window, move it

    See this thread for example.

  • steps I just tried:

    1. uninstalled.
    2. rebooted.
    3. I opened System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy Tab and moved it so I could see.
    4. Installed again.
    5. New recording, pressed red button, it just started recording countdown. Never got a prompt about screenflow wanting to record my desktop.
    6. Built in mac screenshot for recording works, as do some chrome extensions, but I don't want them  and they are limited.

Fred Kufner You may only see the permission window just after ScreenFlow is first installed. You don't need the Security & Privacy open. You may want to create a New User Admin account after uninstalling ScreenFlow and try installing in the New Admin account.

  • I looked and it's not behind mine Configuration screen. Tried everything else I've seen on the internet (lots of problems with Catalina and Screenflow). I've got a meeting to record Monday morning. Am I just screwed or will this be fixed?

Fred Kufner Hmm, so far all the above have worked to fix for other users. We find the popup for permissions occurs behind the Record Configuration windows. Apple doesn't provide a way to add permissions after the fact. We are working on a fix that forces the permissions window to the front and waiting for Apple's approval.

You can report this to support to generate a case number but support will otherwise likely tell you to try all the things I've already gone over. I"m not sure why any of these workarounds aren't working for you unless there's something else blocking the permission request.

Fred Kufner Something in your system seems to be blocking that popup then. Do you have any virus checkers or hacks that might interfere popups. Have you tried to use the laptop's Facetime webcam and Mic? They would generate popups as well.
