How to recover an unsaved file

Hi,

I have made a record of a web conference. Unfortunately, I didn't save immediatly the file of the record. Then my laptop has shutdown.

Is there any way to recover the unsaved recording file ? In temporary files for examples ?

I use Screenflow 7.3.1 on MacBookPro macOS 10.13.6.

Thanks for your help

Joseph

    Here's our instructions for that.

Or hold down the Shift key and select Help menu in ScreenFlow

    Thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately I don't the same Help Menu in Screenflow app : no "Open Temporary Folder in Finder" and holding the Shift key doesn't open any menu.

Joseph Gonzalez It's there in 7.3.2 which was the last update for 7 series.
Screenshot doesn't really mean much because it doesn't indicate whether you were holding the shift key while opening the menu. It's definitely there is 7. I tested on macOS 10.13.6

  • Hi CraigS

    It worked. Thanks.

But the unsaved file I was looking for wasn't in the folder.

    Thank you for your support.

    Best regards

    Joseph

Joseph Gonzalez A problem is that the file is only there temporarily and then the system will delete it. Sorry about that. You can check that location immediately after ScreenFlow closes without saving to find the file.

  • @craigs Why does the software DELETE IT IMMEDIATELY!? This is beyond frustrating. I've used Screenflow for over 5 years and never had these problems. Now I haven't been able to get ONE (1) recording to complete successfully! This is ridiculous.

I've lost hours of excellent demos thanks to this bug. Come on... you guys are better than this. Stop deleting the temp files within seconds of a crash. By the time I researched this "solution" and opened the "T" directory, it was gone.  Plain Stupid.

It's the operating system that determines when to delete temp files.
Generally it should be there until the OS runs certain background routines or you reboot the computer. Sorry but we can't control operating system level functions.

If you're having problems completing recordings that should be a separate issue (on a new thread) to work on.

  • This one is frustrating and has bit me a couple of times. When you're recording scores of videos, you're bound to slip and accidentally hit the Discard button.

At minimum, consider moving the Discard. It's awfully close to other things that you habitually, subconsciously click. You should also add a "confirm to discard," like "are you sure you want to immediately delete the thing you just spent 45 minutes recording."

I'm surprised you have a confirmation for "remove unused media" but not for this.

I think this is also a problem

I just put in a request for both.

sheriffderek I think part of the issue is there's no explanation what is actually being Discarded and What is actually being Recovered.

Post your case number here and I'll track it.

For the "Discard" right after recording: the OS UI-kit might not allow for the move to the left... but an optional check box to have an additional "Are you sure" type confirmation would be great.

Let me begin by praising SF. I could not possibly achieve what I have without Screenflow. And I find the stock library extremely useful. It is also very intuitive and easy to use.

Additionally, it's the best app EVER to train one's patience.

I've been using it for a few years, and the results are remarkable!

There is just one tiny problem with SF: there is absolutely no way it would ever export any sizeable length video. Such as a conference, or a webinar. It will keep exporting it for hours on end and crash pretty much every single time!

The good news is, until now there was at least the option to "Recover" the lost work. This was magical. I could click this a few times, try a couple of times more and in a day or two, I would get the file I need! Nice! But not anymore?

The last training 2h 30 minutes is gone. And, of course, there is no such file as .scc in the T folder. And on YouTube and Google, I was not very lucky to find anyone who ever found a solution to this problem. Do you agree, there is a problem?

I guess, this is just how things are, and there is no way to make SF work better, otherwise, you already would. So, probably it is already the best it can be.

But, seriously, is there a way to make it actually work?

That shouldn't be the case. I think some have reported issues with long Zoom conferences though.

You should report crashes to us because we can analyze the crash log. Keep in mind a crash is not a hang.  Again you must report the crash to us so we can gather the log and your system specs and find the cause.

It's not too far above the recording recovery option.

Thank you, Craig, I will try to get that to you, perhaps, tomorrow.

The support diagnostics are being gathered. It's a major task too, "Application is Irresponsive", so only heavens know how long it may take.

Meanwhile, when SF crashes, Terminal window sometimes pops up. The Terminal output is attached as a text file.

    Thank you.

Dmitry Thanks. We'd need the full Support Diagnostics. BTW Application not responsive may not be a crash though. The app would completely crash otherwise it's just a hang. That would require a very different report so please make sure you mean "crash" and not hang.

Hi Craig, thank you. I have the diagnostics file. How do I send it? I am not sure it is particularly valuable for the whole world to see. Should I post it here, or should I send it somewhere else where professionals will find it definitely more usable than the end users like me?

Thank you, Craig, for your help. I have just sent you a private message. However, I haven't found a way to attach the file. Sadly, today I wasn't able to do a thing with SF. Only hangs and crashes.

Dmitry Your crash log shows ScreenFlow 8.1 which is not compatible with recent macOS. You must update to 10.0.4.

CraigS Thanks. I see! I have updated my OS in the wrong direction: I've installed the latest macOS 12.1 instead of reverting to the old OS. Is the latest Screenflow perhaps compatible with the newest macOS 12.1?

CraigS Awesome. I have just installed the new Screenflow. No crashes and it seem to be faster. At the moment, it hangs very frequently. There is 1.18TB of disk space and 16GB RAM. When I am running Screenflow, RAM is not overloaded, so it does not seem to be the RAM issue. What could I try to optimise the performance? I would be SO happy if I don't have to switch to QuickTime for screencast and FCPX for all the rest. Thank you.

Hi CraigS , it's been flawless today! No crashes, no hangs. Is it possible that the program would hang because of the proxy settings? After I disabled the 60mb limit on proxies, it seem to work very fast. I am very happy now. Phew... Thanks for your guidance!
