The document “XXXXXXX.screenflow” could not be opened.

Hi,

None of my screenflow documents will open, and I have many saved to my desktop. I'm deeply upset.

Here's the error message:

The document “XXXXXXX.screenflow” could not be opened.

ScreenFlow was unable to find the document data file.  This could have been caused by file corruption or a failure when saving the document.  Without the document data file, ScreenFlow will not be able to open this document.

I'm using:

OSX Yosemite - Version 10.10.5

Screenflow - Version 6.2.2 (just updated and wishing I never)

Any help appreciated

  • Sorry you're experiencing this. What version where the documents saved in and where were they saved?
Does it state what files can't be opened?

  • Hi Craig

They were saved in the previous version

    The whole error message is:

"The document “XXXXXXX.screenflow” could not be opened.

ScreenFlow was unable to find the document data file.  This could have been caused by file corruption or a failure when saving the document.  Without the document data file, ScreenFlow will not be able to open this document."

  • MarksNZ Yes the language in the message expresses the situation. Data can't be found and it's through corruption or some other issue when they were saved (usually).

Right click on the ScreenFlow document and use Show Package Contents. There should be a Media folder. Look inside that for a .scc file (missing media can cause the error message). Also look for ScreenFlowDocument.dat, thumbnail.jpg and version.plist. Saving a file to DropBox or equivalent cloud storage can also cause that issue (the live sync can corrupt the document).

  • CraigS After right clicking I saw all of the data you mentioned.

I did however move many of my .screenflow videos to iCloud... dang!!!

I never knew live sync can corrupt documents...

... I wont make that mistake again.

Is everyone aware of this in the public domain?

Thanks for your reply - great support

  • MarksNZ I've mentioned it occasionally in the forum. It seems that syncing while saving to a "cloud" folder creates issues with the save. I'd recommend saving to the desktop and copying to your cloud folder. Sorry this created a problem for you. One "safety check" would be, if you save to cloud immediately test by reopening the project.

  • CraigS Roger that... thanks

  • MarksNZ I think we need to state this more clearly. As you know, finding out after the fact  can result in issues. I'll note that.

  • Hi Craig, I'm having the same problem.  I see the data in the Media folder.  What should I do with it? Where should I put it?
    Thanks!

  • Loretta Huether You can create a new project and import the media including the .scc screen recording. You'd have to redo the editing though.

  • I'm not syncing to Dropbox or iCloud, saving directly to the local hard drive. Yet this just happened after 5 hours of work. "The document “XXXXX” could not be opened. Cannot find document properties"

I was also getting error messages on Command Z undos that (I can't remember exactly) said something about an issue preventing undo. I'm devastated at this occurrence.

  • David Wagner then it sounds like it's not related to this thread. Please start a new topic and include the details. There's been a number of updates to both ScreenFlow and OS since this thread started so it's likely not the same issue even if you believe the symptoms match.
