Win10 freezes while streaming with Wirecast

Hi, we are using Wirecast 6.0.7 64-bit and Win10 pro on our computer (Intel i7-6700K CPU 4Ghz, RAM 32Gb, Capture card: BMD DeckLink Mini Recorder 4K) and it freezes while streaming to Youtube. Do you have any solutions to this problem?

Thanks,

Gábor

  • Is the stream freezing or the Wirecast interface freezing?

First update the Blackmagic Driver to 10.9.10. Then Reset Wirecast Preferences. Wirecast > Help > Send Support Information but click on the lower left Reset Preferences. Reboot the computer and start Wirecast with a New Blank Document and test.

  • CraigS Thank you, I did these things and it seems to be working good.

  • CraigS Hey, now we are experiencing freezing again but only when we stream to Youtube and Facebook simultaneously. Do you have any idea why it is doing it and how we could solve the problem? Thanks.

How are you doing this? Facebook API does not allow you to use another API at the same time as per their terms of service. You'd have to use Wirecast generic RTMP Server for YouTube if using the API for Facebook.  The limitation may not have been implemented in Wirecast 6.0.7 but it's possible changes in Facebook (or YouTube) may be causing the freeze when using both through APIs.

  • CraigS For Youtube we use RTMP MainConcept H.264 1920x1080 25fps 2200kbit/s
For Facebook we use the default it offers x264 1280x720 30fps 2025 kbit/s

  • Gábor Keleti It's possible that's stressing your CPU. What CPU% are you seeing when you do that?

It's also possible that using two different frame rates may be an issue. Try using 30fps for both (YouTube really wants 30fps as well). Granted this can be an issue for PAL compatible countries but the services do seem to center around 30fps.

  • CraigS Ok, thanks, I try it and then I'll get back to you with the information if it worked.

  • CraigS I tried it with 30fps both and after 20 minutes it froze again. It freezes almost always after 20 minutes of streaming to Youtube and Facebook at the same time. Do you have any other idea?

  • Gábor Keleti And CPU is running around 60% when streaming to both locations

  • Gábor Keleti CPU load isn't too bad. Frame rate doesn't seem to be the issue. Thanks for testing.

If you stream to just YouTube for a while and just Facebook for a while does it freeze? I want to see if the CDNs or using both of them is really part of the issue.
If it doesn't freeze then we know the combination of the two is important.

Next step would be to try using the same codec for each. Use either X264 or MainConcept for each. First try X264 with both for example. Then test again with MainConcept with both. This will test if using two different codecs is the cause or maybe one specific codec is the cause.

  • CraigS It works if we only stream to Youtube or Facebook alone. So I think using both is the issue.

On Monday I can test it with the same codec and then I'll let you know if that worked or not. Thanks

Good. That's important information and progress.

Hoping that narrows down the issue.

  • CraigS So today I tested with the same codec and same settings. And it froze again. I used the x264 codec because it didn't let me change the Facebook stream settings, so I just used those settings on the Youtube stream as well. What other things can go wrong? Meanwhile we were streaming on Wednesday, Sunday morning and Sunday evening only to Youtube and it worked perfectly.

  • Gábor Keleti Perhaps try streaming to both using generic RTMP Server for both.

Try reseting Wirecast Preferences again since it may have fixed it once before. Perhaps preferences are getting corrupted.

Also if you're still on Wirecast 6.0.7 try updating to 6.0.8 at this link under Previous Versions at the top

  • CraigS Just now I tried again with the 6.0.8, using RTMP for both with the exact same settings and after 27 minutes it froze again. :(

  • Gábor Keleti One more thing to try (a long shot) is creating a New User Admin account and testing in that account. That would mean both fresh user and Wirecast settings. That would at least eliminate any account related issues that might be a possible cause.

  • CraigS What do you mean by creating a New User Admin account? Where and how can I create a new account?

  • Gábor Keleti Windows can have multiple user accounts.

  • CraigS Oh, I see. Tomorrow I try and let you know, how it goes

  • Gábor Keleti I always have a second admin account that I use just for troubleshooting. It helps eliminate any possible user account settings or corruption issues as a cause for problems that are hard to trace to a specific cause.
