Text changes in live shots in Preview automatically updating in Program

There seems to be an oddity in Wirecast 7 (tested and confirmed in both 7.1 and latest 7.5 - details below), where text layer changes force a live update of text and positioning in Program. Changing only the positioning does not automatically update in Program, but once any text changes are made, the positioning AND text updates in Program WITHOUT actively Taking the change.

I'm not sure if the auto-live updating of text is enabled in order to facilitate other features within Wirecast, but it seems like more of a glitch than anything on its own.

As an example of why this is undesirable behaviour for us: Leading up to the beginning of the actual event, we generally set up welcome slates, that state the event name and start time. Sometimes we have to adjust the time at the whims of the client - say the speaker is running late, and the "official" start time has changed from 9:00am to 9:15am. If the start time slate is live and we need to adjust the start time, all of the changes to the text are viewed live by the audience. Our only option is to quickly make a duplicate of the slate, and make the change on the other slate before taking it Live.

As far as I can tell, this only happens when editing text on Text layers. Haven't come across any other types that do this. I will update if we find anything else.

Output settings, CDN, canvas size, etc, have no effect on this behaviour. Wirecast settings as default (tested with a fresh install of Wirecast 7.5.0 (demo) on a personal computer).

Is this supposed to be a practical "feature", or is it a bug that can be fixed? At the very least, is it a feature that can be disabled?

Thank you!

  • I think the intention is to allow the operator to change text live without having to Take the shot. This is important in many live streaming situations.

Please do fill out the feature request form explaining your workflow and how you prefer it to operate. Perhaps we can create an "alternate working state" for those who work as you do.

  • CraigS Thanks for the quick reply. I think we would be very happy with an option to enable / disable live text changes. I understand the appeal of the live changes, but it can be problematic in some scenarios, which unfortunately for us is much of the time.

  • Followed up with a Feature Request, case# 00476595. Asked for ability to disable live text changes, to go back to a "take-to-apply" workflow much like v6.

  • Ian Tyssen Thanks for making the feature request. It's important for the developers to know the different scenarios in which people use Wirecast.

  • I am very interested in this topic as well and wanted to see if there was an update? I often work with a federal agency using WC 10.1 (Mac OSX 13.6) and really need to be able to update titles in preview before taking them live. Live dynamic text is definitely not what we are used to since we updated from WC 6.0.8. Can there please be an option to turn on/turn off live text updates if it has not already been implemented and I just am not seeing it? Thanks sooooo much!

Was there any implementation of this? I am using version 14.3.1 and cannot see anything that disables the live text change

Since editing text is live you can copy the text shot without dependencies, creating a new duplicate but independent shot and edit it while in Preview (that doesn't go live).
