Sluggish audio waveform refresh on timeline

I am working at a high temporal magnification so I can make ripple-edits to the audio track.  (removal of dead space, my own mistakes, etc.)

I find that when I make a ripple edit, the clips close in but the waveform on the right-most clip does not render for at least 10-15 seconds. It needs to be real time so I can move quickly and get work done.

Is this a function of my Mac's processor or memory?

Or is it a function of the LaCie 2tb external Thunderbolt drive maybe not reacting fast enough?  Should I move the temp folder to my main SSD drive?

Appreciate any assistance on this.  Lot's of recordings to make still to come.

  • ScreenFlow 8.2.3?
Waveform redraw is resource intensive on many NLEs.
The duration of the file is a factor (impacts size of Waveform Cache).
Make sure you have at least 20% free system drive space.

    Delete ScreenFlow Cache:

    1) Make sure ScreenFlow is not open. (save any work in progress)

    2) Open a new Finder window.

    3) Select the "GO" menu top of screen, Hold "Option" key with menu open, and select the "Library" that appears.

    4) In the Library folder open Caches folder.

    5) Delete ALL folders that start with “net.telestream.screenflow (8 and any earlier versions if you see them)”

    6) Empty trash.

You can try deleting the Cache and see if that helps.

  • CraigS Improvement.  Maybe about 40-50% faster refresh.

I do have more than 20% free system drive space.

I reassigned temp to the SSD main drive but I didn't really notice an improvement with that. I noticed it more with the cache reset.

It's now workable but will the cache need to be emptied/deleted whenever it gets filled up again?

  • Steven Levine We continue to work on improving the redraw but good to hear clearing the cache helps

  • I see threads on this problem from 5 years ago and I still have the issue. I have a 2019 iMac, the highest possible specs (64GB RAM 3.6GHz i9). Running MacOS Mojave. Clearing the Cache makes the redrew even slower. I do have long recordings (over 20 minutes). I also using Ableton Live, Logic Pro, FL Studio, Final Cut Pro, none of those programs have any issue drawing the waveform. Only Screenflow, but to be honest this has been a problem since 2015 but it's finally starting to annoy the hell out of me. Screenflow is the only sluggish program on my computer.

Is there a solution to this or are you still working on improving the redraw feature?

BTW I'm using Screenflow 7.2(because the audio capture is broken in the latest version) and also 9.0.3. Both have the same redraw issue.

  • Rishabh our internal reference as we continue to work on improving this

Please fill out the Support Form and possibly link to example showing how slow the waveform is redrawing on your system
