ScreenFlow 8.1 doesn't record Audio (Mojave)

Hi there.

Upgraded to 8.1 and installed the new audio driver.

I'm trying to record a GarageBand session but cannot for the life of me get ScreenFlow 8.1 to record audio.

When both GarageBand and my Mac's audio output settings are on 'Telestream Audio Capture', no audio is played back though headphones/speakers while recording and when the clip is added to a ScreenFlow project it is video only with no audio having been recorded. (I have no option to 'Extract Audio' from the clip in the timeline).

If I set GarageBand's output to 'Built In Output', but keep the Mac's output settings on 'Telestream Audio Capture', audio is played back thorough headphones/speakers, but no audio is recorded.

I also tried recording a YouTube video through Safari with the Mac's audio output setting set to  'Telestream Audio Capture'. Again, there was no audio playing through my headphones/speakers during recording and the resulting clip had no audio when added to a ScreenFlow project.

I'm currently running macOS Mojave 10.14

Anyone else experiencing this? Is there a fix?

  • First test by recording a YouTube video in Safari to confirm the drive is working.
Please confirm whether you have a new Mac (iMac Pro or 2018 MBP) with T2 chip.
For testing please make sure Mic input is set to internal and monitor only through internal speakers. Remove USB and Bluetooth audio devices.

This is the only report I've seen of this so I suspect you may have a system specific issue.

As I mentioned in the original post, I've already tested recording a YouTube video in Safari. I tested again at your request with the same result.

Worth noting that if I set the video playing before hitting record, audio plays back though the speakers, but as soon as the ScreenFlow recording begins the volume cuts off and stays off while recording.

All USB and Bluetooth audio devices were removed before testing.

    My machine is a

    MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3.

  • Patrick Baird ScreenFlow should record Youtube in Safari without issue.

When testing YouTube video in Safari do not set anything to Telestream Audio Capture. Set computer to Internal speakers.

  • Patrick Baird You're welcome of course.
Checking so far we have no other Mojave audio capture issues reported so we may be asking more details about your system.

  • CraigS I have exactly the same problem as Patrick. And exactly the same configuration (MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3). So now you have another Mojave audio capture issue reported.

  • John Nordlander Glad I'm not the only one!

Support had me try this, which worked.

s a test, add a new user account (with admin privileges) and try recording a Youtube video using ScreenFlow under this new user account. This will give us an indication if there is a third party application / driver that might be interfering. This Apple article gives an overview on how to add a new user account ( https://support.apple.com/kb/PH25796?locale=en_US ).

Current advice is to uninstall individual programs tied to my user account which may be interfering with ScreenFlow 8.

Thanks. That verifies it's a system specific issue. If it works in a New User Account it means there's either a setting or utility running in the user account having an affect.

John Nordlander please do create a New User Admin account and test there as well.

  • Success!

Looking through my applications, I noticed that I still had an older version of ScreenFlow installed (v.6 I believe). Uninstalling this older version and restarting my machine seems to have fixed the issue.

CraigS  Thank you for your time and patience. I appreciate it.

  • Patrick Baird Great to hear. Since we changed the audio driver that was probably creating an issue access the current one.

  • CraigS I have created a new User Admin account and running SC from this account works, but not from my regular user account. This means, if I understand  you correctly, that I'm dealing with a system specific issue.  And I should now track down and weed out "either a setting or utility", right?

  • John Nordlander Yes, it's something running in the user account. It could be a preference setting in a program in system preferences or some utility running that's impact ScreenFlow.

  • CraigS Hm …, this means that I have my work cut out for me. Any guesses as to exactly which (type of) settings/utilities could be problematic for SC?

  • John Nordlander Sometimes the best thing is to have an account dedicated to screen capture.

First place to look would be any programs that install audio drivers. As noted with Patrick, ScreenFlow's old driver was the issue for him. Third party drives can be an issue as well.

  • Just upgraded to 8.1 build 31304.  Mojave 10.14.  Mac Mini.   Previous version worked fine.  I've completed the audio driver reinstall per instructions.  I don't show the driver in the Mac sound settings or under the advanced tab.  I do have a computer audio selection checkbox for new recording.  Youtube videos record but as soon as the recording starts, speaker audio stops.  Comes back again as soon as the recording stops.  No audio in the youtube recording.  V8 worked first try on my MacBook.

  • David McVinnie given Patrick noted that removing an older version of ScreenFlow fixed it, it's possible you still have the older ScreenFlow driver installed as well.  Also make sure you're not monitoring with USB or Bluetooth speakers or headset.

I need very complete details since monitoring can impact recording in some cases.

It would look something like this. Make sure ScreenFlow is selected.
