ScreenFlow 8.1 doesn't record Audio (Mojave)

Hi there.

Upgraded to 8.1 and installed the new audio driver.

I'm trying to record a GarageBand session but cannot for the life of me get ScreenFlow 8.1 to record audio.

When both GarageBand and my Mac's audio output settings are on 'Telestream Audio Capture', no audio is played back though headphones/speakers while recording and when the clip is added to a ScreenFlow project it is video only with no audio having been recorded. (I have no option to 'Extract Audio' from the clip in the timeline).

If I set GarageBand's output to 'Built In Output', but keep the Mac's output settings on 'Telestream Audio Capture', audio is played back thorough headphones/speakers, but no audio is recorded.

I also tried recording a YouTube video through Safari with the Mac's audio output setting set to  'Telestream Audio Capture'. Again, there was no audio playing through my headphones/speakers during recording and the resulting clip had no audio when added to a ScreenFlow project.

I'm currently running macOS Mojave 10.14

Anyone else experiencing this? Is there a fix?

David McVinnie Hmm, Those are all the things that would impact audio.
Do report this. The solutions mentioned here worked for others so perhaps there's something we're overlooking about your setup or settings. ScreenFlow does capture audio in Mojave otherwise.

  • It's obvious the driver is installed, but is it in the right place?  The fact there's no driver error message or driver listing in the audio output sources says we're missing somewhere.

David McVinnie Just making sure you deleted the .kext driver. that should no longer be there.

    The new driver would be:
    Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/TelestreamAudioCapture.driver
The driver is not listed in System Sound preferences.

CraigS this is not true Ive had this problem even before Mojave, recording works but saving the file does not, it starts out, then fizzels out, and finally freezes about 1/3 of the way down. Ive had to invest in another program just so I can record and save my webinars (iMac)

Harry K Then your issue is not related to the one on this thread. If you'd like help please start another thread specific to your issue and I'll be glad to help.

  • Still no change.  I did open previous projects and audio playback if fine.  I have Audacity, Final Cut Pro and Imovie installed but not loaded (as best I can tell)

    ScreenFlow 8.1, macOS Mojave 10.14.1
I had no problem capturing full screen YouTube video with audio playing in Safari.
See playback in ScreenFlow and audio meters playing the audio in lower right.

I also have Audacity, FCPX, iMovie and many other apps that handle audio. No issue having those installed.

When installing/running 8.1 for the first time it asks me to upgrade the audio driver. I Ok that. It asks me to have access to the mic. I Ok that (although not using the mic for this).

You should install from an Admin account. Check to see you have Mic access as well in Security but it shouldn't make a difference for capturing system sound.

Otherwise I didn't need to do anything special to get it to work.

Has support gotten back to you with other things to test David McVinnie ?

  • Not yet.  In troubleshooting today.  I have my macbook and my mini side by side.  When I start a recording on the macbook, the audio panel output presents the telestream audio capture and I can hear the recording audio.  When I stop it, it goes away.  On the mini, the panel shows the telestream audio capture, but it does not go away, even when I quit Screenflow.

David McVinnie So something on the Mini is specifically interfering.
Try creating a New User Admin account on the Mini and test in that account.
Given Mojave can work and one computer works but another doesn't, looking at a New Account may indicate whether it's an account based or a system based issue.

David McVinnie That's good and important. Now we have to figure out what the "something" is in the account.
Two avenues are third party programs or drivers that might be running in the background or User Account preferences either application specific or in the User Account itself, are corrupted. Granted this is broad (at the moment) but at least it's progress. I'll see if I can think of other areas.

At least it's clear your system is OK as the new account shows. And ScreenFlow does work generally. We have to go account gremlin hunting.

I ran into the same issue (no audio recording) on Mojave 10.14.1 with ScreenFlow 7.3.2.  The solution is to enable ScreenFlow for Microphone and then Screenflow will record computer audio.  I also have ScreenFlow enabled under Accessibility.

    Security & Privacy -> Privacy -> Microphone -> Enable ScreenFlow.app.

SmashRiot and in High Sierra and up the ScreenFlow audio driver needs permission so that may have happened in the process as well.

Karen Jossel If you'd like help please ask the question.

As noted above SmashRiot solved the problem Apple is increasing security with High Sierra and then further with Mojave. Security is to limit risks but it does involve more work for the user to grant permission for Mic, Camera, Audio Driver. Sorry but that's Apple going forward. The steps are pretty simple and it's not specific to ScreenFlow. Any software that uses Mic and Camera will have to do this.

So others can understand. This needs to be done for Mic and Camera.
