Problems with audio and Screenflow 7/8

I was on Screenflow 6.3 and everything was working perfectly. But then I upgraded to 7, when heard that 8 was coming out and would get a free update. But since I have done the update to 8 I am having endless issues with the audio and the Telestream Audio Driver. I screencast music production software. So it seems if I don't open up Screenflow before my music software, the music software doesn't pick up the telestream audio driver. SO then I have to quite the software, start Screenflow first, and then the music software and make sure it pickups the Telestream Audio Driver. Then there is issues with the software being at different sample rates. So I set it to the same sample rate, but then when I watch back there seems to be issues with the timing of my recorded voice and the computer audio.

I never had this issue in Screenflow 6. I still have 6 installed and I jumped back to that on the same system and everything works fine. No out of sync issues with the voice over and computer audio. No issues with making sure I start Screenflow before my music software that I want to screencast

And also sometimes when I open up a Screenflow 8 project there is no audio, but I can see the meters moving. I then need to go into my Audio MIDI Setup, switch to my built in audio device and then switch back to my dedicated USB audio interface and then there's sound.

Im not too sure what was changed, but its a bit of a pain working with the new Screenfow and the Telestream Audio Driver. Any one else having similar issues, and have they resolved it?

I've been using Screenflow for the last 8 years, and this has been the only release that has really disappointed me, and is effecting my workflow.

Due to changes in Apple's operating system and new hardware (computers with the new T2 chip) we've had to make changes. In ScreenFlow 8 you must set the output of some audio software to Telestream Audio Capture. We understand this can create some inconveniences but Apple's changes require us to use a new audio driver which requires different setup procedure. We continue to work on improving the user experience around this.

In ScreenFlow 7.3.1 you may have actually had to start recording first. In 8 you no longer need to do that.

You can revert back to ScreenFlow 7.2 for the time being if you'd like, which uses the older driver.

Please make sure you're running the current ScreenFlow Helper app as an older one can cause issues with audio when used with ScreenFlow 8.

  • CraigS which driver is 7.3 using. Cos I jumped back to that and still had issues.

I think I'm just going to resort back to 6.3 for the recording and then do the editing in 8. I have also noticed that 8 seems to be way more demanding on the Mac than 6.3. Redrawing the waveforms is slow and playback is very slow. Is this anything that is going to be improved?

Very irritating as 6.3 was very solid!

Gary Hiebner The new driver was introduced with 7.3. You can use 7.2 which has the old driver. You won't need to go back to 6. 7.2 is available on our website. Look for Previous Version at the top of the download page.

  • CraigS on your website I can only get the previous version of 7.3, not 7.2

  • I noticed if I changed the track thumbnail to a single thumbnail, it made a world of difference with the performance. Just in case anyone else wants to know this as well.

Gary Hiebner Hmm it looks like 7.2 was removed with the release of 8. You could use 6.2.4 though. Again the change in audio driver use is due to changes Apple made. The old driver will not work properly on new Macs like the iMac Pro and other Macs with the new T2 chip. Apple made hardware changes in how audio is handled. I'd also note that with High Sierra and going forward the old driver can be blocked on install unless one gives it permission in the Mac's Security preference pane. I'd note that it's impact is not specific to ScreenFlow. This impacted a wide range of developers who's software uses system sound. We've actually moved more quickly to solve this than many other developers.

Yes, use of thumbnails would impact caching which may impact performance depending on the processing power of the computer and RAM. That wouldn't have an impact on the audio driver though.
