Playing WMV or AVI files in Keynote or LibreOffice
I am creating a Powerpoint 2010 presentation on Windows 10 but will need to play it on a Macbook. My problem is inserting video files. If I insert them as WMV or AVI will Flip4mac allow them to be played with Keynote or LibreOffice? At present these programs do not recognise the WMVs as movie files, and say that the AVI files "cannot be added"
macOS Sierra (10.12) seems to have broken Flip4Mac compatibility with both Keynote and Powerpoint. This is due to changes Apple made. If you're on El Capitan (10.11) it may work.
Officially Flip4Mac does not support Sierra due to this and related issues.
Personally I'd recommend converting the video files to H.264 .mp4, if at all possible, which will play on both platforms.
It depends on the installed codec support and what the platform-dependent multimedia frameworks (used by LibreOffice) support in the way of codecs:
- On Windows, LibreOffice can open anything for which DirectShow filters are installed (list of default formats).
- On Linux, LibreOffice uses gstreamer, so whatever you can play using gstreamer can be used with LibreOffice (list of defined types).
- On Mac, it uses Quicktime (list of media formats - Apple has now killed this link. Internet archive version here).
LibreOffice by itself doesn't support any media files (it could play WAVs directly, but that is of limited use, and not sure whether this is gone as well now).
Sunderlandgreen Quicktime itself End Off Life on Mac which is why Apple removed the links which means so many older codecs won't work and Flip4Mac, which is based on Quicktime Frameworks and Components will also have issues. Apple either uses or transcodes files to AVFoundation compatible codecs (if it can).
