Blank video and audio clips in timeline

I recently upgraded my Mac OS to Catalina 10.15.4. Since then, I have a few Screenflow projects (which were originally edited while I was still using High Sierra) which are no longer working correctly. I am using Screenflow 9.0.3. Here's the problem:

1. The video clips in the timeline look exactly the same as when I last opened them under High Sierra but some of the timeline video clips are blank (blacked out in the timeline and also play back with a black screen).

2. All of the audio clips in the timeline are still showing waveforms but some of them are silent when the playhead passes over them.

3. I am getting no messages that the media files that match the timeline clips are offline or need to be reconnected.

4. All of the timeline clips have corresponding media files in the media finder but some of them are blacked out (no thumbnail preview visible). If I try to open a preview of these clips they also play back blank/black.

5. The projects are all saved as Packaged Documents. When I control + click on a packaged document and inspect the Media folder I see that many of the project files are missing there (although running a Get Info of the packaged document is still showing me the original larger file size from when all of the files were present).

6. None of these projects ever used external drives. Everything was always stored and worked with on the internal machine drive. I can say for a fact that I did not delete any of the files from the Media folders of the packaged documents but some of the files appear to be missing there for sure.

I have the feeling that some of these project files were temporarily stored in a different folder and the update to Catalina somehow broke this path or deleted the temp storage. Wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to restore these projects to their full functionality? I am looking at a lot of lost time and work if I am not able to recover those files.

Thanks in advance.

Kurt

  • Still trying to solve this problem. I am testing what could have caused this and am able to replicate the problem as follows:

    1. I add two clips to the timeline and make some edits.
    2. I save and close the project and also close Screenflow.
    3. I go into Finder and change the location of the two video files that I imported into the project. For example, I move the files from a root folder to a sub folder.
    4. When I re-open the Screenflow project, I get a prompt that (only) one of the two files is offline and needs to be found. I navigate to the file and click on CONTINUE. The project opens up but the 2nd file is black in the timeline and also blacked out in the media pool. Although I know where the file is located (and could easily re-connect it to the project) I get no auto-prompt from Screencast to to try to find it. I also see no way of manually re-connecting a missing file to the project.

This basically leaves me in the position of no longer being able to use this file in the project. I have to delete it from the media pool (which also removes it from the timeline) and then re-import it into the project (which nixes any edits I had made).

Why doesn't Screenflow prompt me to find ALL of the offline project files that are missing? Is there really no way to manually locate and re-connect missing files?

If the document is saved as a Package then all the media should be contained in the ScreenFlow document once saved.

I'd rather not make any assumptions and there's some information that is not clear to me.

Are the files that show as black, imported files, or Screen Recordings?
If they are imported, what was their source (and/or their codec if you know)?
Once the document is saved, there should be copies in the document so changing the location of any external files would have no impact.

Right-click on the ScreenFlow document and select Show Package Contents.
Open the Media folder and tell me if you see all the files you were using in ScreenFlow.

Once you provide all the above information I may have additional things for you to check.

  • The files that show as black (or are silent) are all imported files. They are a mix of WAV files (recorded with a audio filed recorder at 16bit/44100Hz) and MOV files (shot with a Panasonic GH3 so I think they are H.264/1080/25p). Some other files in the timeline (which I am not having a problem with) are using the same codecs.

When I right-click on the ScreenFlow document and select Show Package Contents, the black/silent files are missing from the media folder. The ones that do playback fine are all there.

  • I've just had the same problem with missing video slides.  I haven't upgraded my Mac OS but I did upgrade to the newest version of Screenflow mid-project.

This may mean they weren't saved with the document. There may be scenarios where that might happen. Can you duplicate those scenarios? Perhaps you were using them from an external SD card or drive for example.

I'd need details in order to help. Please check to see if they are in the Media folder in the Package Contents.

All of the media files were copied from the SD cards to the internal laptop drive before editing began. Once the edit was finished and an MP4 file was rendered, I moved the original media files to an external HD for archiving. I kept the packaged document on the internal laptop HD and it was opening just fine (with no blank clips) until I updated to Catalina.

Could moving the original media files to an external HD have caused this? Doesn't the packaged document file system make copies of the original media to keep everything together as a complete package? Or am I misunderstanding the way it works? I am going to try to move the original media files back into the packaged document Media folder to see if that helps.

Kurt Gardella Sounds like media might have been moved before ScreenFlow copied them to the Package. Once that's done, ScreenFlow wouldn't care about the original at all.

After saving and closing the document (package) I'd Right Click > Show Package Contents on the document and check its Media folder to make sure it's all there.
Then you can do whatever you want to the original media.

  • CraigS No they weren't.  Not sure why they weren't saved when I moved the file to dropbox.

Jacinta Calabro Before using any cloud storage one should first save locally and confirm all elements are intact. Cloud syncing, especially if you save directly to a syncing folder, can result in issues.

I just had the same problem. SF 9.0.7. iMac with MacOS 10.11. Opening files that were created and edited half a year ago, probably on MacOS 10.10, makes the scc file in media folder disappear.

To reproduce, open an "old" SF file with SF, you'll see that the capture file is still there but all black. Then just quit screenflow without saving or doing anything. After that, the scc file is gone. I did notice that the scc file is deleted during the quit, not the opening.

Strangely, the date and time of the screenflow file remains unchanged.

I've sent in a support request for this, including a sample file. I regard it as a "high" prio, since I can't edit any of my slightly older files.

Tisons Of course I mean MacOS 11 when I say 10.11. Habits die hard. And 10 when I said 10.10.

Tisons Can you test this in ScreenFlow 10.0.2 on either Catalina or Big Sur?

CraigS Exactly the same thing happens. On Big Sur, demo version of SF 10.

      IOW:

      1. check the contents, SCC file is there.

      2. open the SF project with SF 10

      3. checking the contents, SCC file is still there, but on the timeline the screen capture is all white. The MP4 camera file I imported is still there intact, though.

      4. Quit SF without saving.

      5. Check contents, and the SCC file is gone, the MP4 imported file is still there.

I uploaded the file with the support request. Support case number 00834209.

Please clarify the OS and version of ScreenFlow the original document was created on?
Was this done on the same Mac and monitors you are currently using?
Can you open that document in that version of ScreenFlow without issue?

Thanks for including the document so we can examine.

CraigS Well, I don't know for certain which exact version I had back then, but I assume MacOS 10.15 and ScreenFlow 9.something. And it doesn't open correctly on SF 9 or 10 now. On MacOS 11.4.

      Same iMac and second monitor.

I've sent you a dropbox link to the document in my support request with number 00834209, as I mentioned.

Tisons The download keeps failing for me. Perhaps put the document in a folder and then zip the folder. If you're zipping the document it might be getting corrupted.
