Bugs in 14.2 on Mojave

Hi all, is anyone having issues with adding alpha channel .mov files on the latest v14.2? Wirecast crashes when adding, doesn’t matter if I drag and drop or add as media. I’m using Mojave on a Mac Pro 5.1.

Then on the previous version there’s no problem with the .mov files but sometimes .png files will go black when pushing to the live area.

thanks

What codec specifically as MOV is a container?

Is this in a New Document created in 14.2?

Sorry are you saying this is an issue with 14.? PNG is not MOV so I'm not sure what the reference is here.

    • Hi Craig, thanks for getting back so quickly. Problems started on v14.1.2 at some point building layers with different sources PNG files of static images wouldn’t show on the live screen, but did on preview, on the live they just showed black. Everything else worked fine. I upgraded to v14.2 and could not open the project I had made in v14.1.2, it would simply crash, so had to re-build the whole set up. But when I went to add the first file which was an MPEG-4 (QuickTime) in a mov container with an alpha channel it crashed. I never managed to add these files. This was very frustrating, I even tried v14.0.4, but then it crashed when adding a Decklink capture card.

I'm not sure I understand this. We support ProRes and Animation codec with Alpha. I'm not aware of MPEG-4 with Alpha. You'll have to attach the file for us to examine.

Please test the same PNG files in a new document created in 14.2.

  • The PNG problem was only apparent after a bit when the whole set up was created in v14.1.2, with different layers and layered shots. At the start, they worked fine. In v14.2 the PNGs seemed to work fine, but I couldn't build the same workspace as it wouldn't accept the mov files, so could be it was still an issue. I've attached the mov file.

    many thanks

Iggy Ramsey It's a variation of Quicktime Animation.
      Wirecast 14.2
      macOS 10.15.7

Imports and works for me without issue.

Iggy Ramsey I'll try this in Mojave as well.

    • CraigS Unfortunately I don't think I can upgrade to 10.15 without some firmware hacking on a Mac Pro, which could add more problems.

I tested on Mojave and it works there as well for me.

Iggy Ramsey Since you're running a 2010 or 2012 Mac Pro (5.1.) it may be related to the GPU card you're using. They only were "officially" supported through High Sierra unless a Metal capable GPU was installed/patched.

    • CraigS the strange thing is that the mov works fine on previous Wirecast versions, but had sporadic problems with PNGs, looks like I'll have to download an older version that works fine with all files

     I have a hunch that's the issue.
Mac Pro running an "unsupported" GPU on an "unsupported" OS combination. There are likely calls to functions Wirecast is using around Metal that aren't going to work right.

You can go to Wirecast > Help > Send Support Information and then select Save Report and attach the report here and I can submit it but I suspect the issue is specific to Mac, OS, GPU combination since Mojave is working.

    • CraigS thanks Craig, I'll upload it tomorrow as I'm not at that computer now, but you just gave me an idea to boot into High Sierra and check if it works there on an older Wirecast version

Iggy Ramsey I can show the engineers this article which verifies Apple does support Mojave with your GPU. Started investigation WIRE-18760

Iggy Ramsey The developers believe they've spotted the cause and may have this fixed in an upcoming update (no time frame given though for that).

  • Hi Craig, that's great news! I tested it on High Sierra running v12 and it has no issues, software was solid and stable, so clearly a problem with the GPU and Mojave's Metal option. I will use only the High Sierra until there is an update for Mojave and 3rd party GPUs.

We should have a fix released at some point so do hang tight with what works while we get it ready.
