BMD Quad HDMI Video Sluggish

Everything was fine, so I updated until it wasn't.

Was Wirecast 13.1.3 Pro, BMD Desktop Video 12.0, and GeForce drivers approximately two months out. Updated to Wirecast 14.2.1, BMD 12.1, and GeForce 471.11.

Suddenly, my 4Kp60 source is stuttering. Almost as though the capture card itself is short on bus bandwidth. Video is sluggish, drifting farther back from real time over several seconds before dropping frames and snapping forward, possibly flushing an overrunning buffer. Repeat.

I've tried rolling back all three to no avail.

I've made a new document with only the single capture source with identical results.

Not the most powerful PC, but it's dedicated to Wirecast. Maxing out at 32% CPU, 65% overall GPU, and I've tried x264 over the typical NVENC, and MP4 local versus RTMP. None explain the change from a previously working setup.

Otherwise, Windows 10 21H1, i7-5820K, 16GB DDR4, 1650 SUPER. The 1650 SUPER and BMD Quad HDMI are attached at PCIe 1 and 3, which are the two slots provided by the NB for 16x and 8x PCIe 3.0. No BIOS changes from previously working.

Ingest source is PC 4Kp60 YUV on an identically PC 4K canvas with monitor preference at 60FPS.

Naturally, I've tried disabling live switcher tiles, live volume, and anything else possibly performance sucking.

I've gone so far as fully uninstalling all software, including Wirecast, running a complete DDU, and up and downdating everything between most recent to previously working.

This might indicate something other than Wirecast changed that's causing this.

    How are you determining this?
Is Wirecast Preference Video Display Rate set to 60fps?
    Local Output recording?
Have you tried ISO recording the source?

    • CraigS I've considered everything that may have changed. No hardware's changed. The only other software on the computer is Stream Deck.

The stuttering is visible on monitor, RTMP, and local disk outputs in any combination.

      Video display rate is 60FPS.

I can try ISO later today, but I don't suspect different results as the stuttering is visible as early as the live preview monitor.

The output FPS is a fairly consistent 60FPS in either RTMP or local disk. Maybe dropping a couple frames a minute.

Please do that test and confirm.
Please provide the file to us as an example of the issue.

I'm not sure I understand this. Is the issue only with a single source?

    • CraigS Yes. Only the 4Kp60 source is affected. Another 4Kp29.97 and 1080i29.97 are working fine, even concurrently in the same shot.

I've also tried physically removing the other sources in a blank Wirecast document with only the 4Kp60 source.

Thanks. Please do get us the 4Kp60 ISO recording

Randorn Canis Developers would also like you to disable Live Icons and see if that improves 4kp60.

Can you link to the 4kp60 ISO recording (Dropbox, etc.)?

Also do you have a visual example of this?
Can you do this as a local drive output recording?

    • CraigS Final output is 4Kp60. We're already cheating with some sources at only 4Kp30.

Media Express is flawless. Actually less latency between capture to preview by maybe 6 frames. I can only capture ten seconds of raw video before exhausting memory, but many repeated trials have shown no stuttering. The raw video is 6GB per clip.

Local disk output from Wirecast looks similar to everything above. This clip sees 19 dropped frames in total after the first second. x264 actually sees fewer dropped frames with the same stutter in capture still present. CPU usage peaked at 30% with approximately 60% on any single core.

When you did the 4kp60 ISO recording in Wirecast was it the only source being used at the time? If not can you try that with a New Document and 4kP60 as the only source.

Also, with Media Express you can replicate multiple sources by opening multiple instances. Is it possible you can try that will all your sources being recorded simultaneously in Media Express?

We'd also like to know your system's motherboard model as the number and handling of the PCIe lanes might be a factor.

    • CraigS Yes. Wirecast had a new blank document with a single source. However, despite the stuttering visible with only a single source, it's notably worse with additional elements in a shot.

I was able to run multiple instances of Media Express. No stuttering whatsoever. Still fantastically short latency about 6 frames faster than Wirecast.

The motherboard is an ASUS X99-A II. Only devices are graphics on 16-1 and the Quad HDMI on 16-3. Those are the only two slots providing PCIe 3.0 with at least 8 lanes directly from NB.

  • Back from break.

I've installed and tested 14.3 release. At first, it looked to have tightened those building delays. However, after running the newest release in production, the capture has become significantly worse to the point of unusable.

It's almost as though the capture is running in slow motion, skipping around constantly several times a second.
