4K video capture choppy

Having issues with 4K camera capture on screen flow (9)

capturing 4K 25fps or 30fps with the same issue, the preview is fine but after capture the video is choppy.

have tried exporting but the issue remains in the Export so it’s definitely coming from the capture process.

ive tried capturing direct from QuickTime and it’s capturing fine so it’s again definitely something in screen flow.

have tried capturing the video input in isolation with The same result.

    CraigS Hi Craig

The camera is a Black Magic Micro Studio Cam 4k

it's being routed through an ATEM Switcher which is outputting the HDMI signal in 4k.

I am using a Elgato Cam Link 4K to capture this signal.

All works perfectly fine in 1080p

Capturing via Quicktime is fine, and as mentioned the preview window is fine in screenflow, but the captured 4k source is choppy. Have checked the frame rates are all matching.

    CraigS

    hi, yes latest version

the timeline frame rate can be 30fps or 25fps - makes no difference.

right now it’s set to 25fps

the only difference is when jumping from 1080p to 4K.

    CraigS

it’s outputting 25fps or 30fps depending on what I’m setting in screenflow

if I’m using 25fps in screenflow then I’ve the camera set to 25fps and the atem is outputting 25fps

Bryan Thanks for that. Can you jog through the timeline and see if there's a pattern to the dropped or duplicate frames? That may give us an idea of what's going wrong on input to ScreenFlow.

  • Hi! I have same issue with capturing 4K video in ScreenFlow.

My setting: Sony 6300, Elgato CamLink 4K, MacBook Pro 16", ScreenFlow 9.0.5

Capturing 1080p is fine. But 4K video is choppy.

4K video captured by QuickTime is nice and smooth.

How can I solve this problem?

Anton Shein The original poster never answered my last question. Would you be able to do that?

Have you checked camera frame rate vs ScreenFlow timeline framerate?

  • Hello CraigS , I've noticed this issue as well today.. I'll try to describe my configuration as best as possible to help narrow down this issue.

    Equipment

Mac Pro 2019 (192GB RAM, 800GB SSD free, 8 Core CPU)
    Sony A6400
    Scarlett 2i2 USB
    Elgato Camlink 4k
    macOS 11.0.1 (20B29)
    Screenflow 9.0.5

The camera is set to output HDMI at 30FPS at 4K. The Screenflow document is set to 4K at 30FPS. I can record from QuickTime at the full 4K resolution and import this into Screenflow and it's buttery smooth. However, recording 4k from Screenflow feels like 10FPS upon playback.

If I set the project to 1080p at 30FPS when recording a 4K at 30FPS video from the Camlink, I'm still noticing that it is choppy video.

I also checked my system to see if perhaps I had a bus saturation and it is on it's on a bus by itself. I also moved it from a 3.0 to 3.1 bus and that still did not make a difference.

I have a backup CamLink which I have in case my other one dies. It yielded the same results as above. However, I am not convinced that it is a hardware issue since QuickTime was able to record the 4K video in ProRes 422 without any problems.

When recording the video, I am not doing any screen capturing at the time of recording, just the Camlink 4k and Audio Input from the Scarlett 2i2.

Dave Kimura It's not clear what else is on the bus.
You need to show the entire USB Device Tree.

and the devices specifically by selecting the relevant bus.

Also please include the Cam Link settings in ScreenFlow Configure Recording window. Something like this.

Dave Kimura after doing all the above. Set the Cam Link and source to 1080 and see if it behaves differently. Remove the Scarlett when testing 4K and 1080 as it's another variable that might be impacting ScreenFlow. That will verify it's specific to 4K and not the device's relationship to ScreenFlow.

  • CraigS There is only one thing on that bus.

And on the selection of the A6400 only has 4k on the selection. I have to change a setting on camera itself to change it to 1080p.

    • Dave Kimura I did uncheck the Scarlett in the recording. The issue persisted.

  • Here's a sample of what it looks like. This was recorded on 4K. If I record at 1080p, it's smooth. Recording in quicktime at 4k is also really smooth.

Todd Burns We have this confirmed fixed in a future upgrade. I can't give the specific release date yet but there will likely be some significant improvements.

    • CraigS It's really strange. I was experiencing this issue (as you have seen with the information that I provided above). However, I just tested it again, and there are no longer any stutters. It's buttery smooth now. I haven't "changed" anything as far as the OS, hardware or connections. I did update to the latest Screenflow. And, I did get new monitors, but that shouldn't have affected the camlink. Really strange. I really don't like that it's working now without knowing what caused it.
