Picture, if virtual camera off

I use wirecast as moderator of zoom workshops, etc. For this I always use the virtual camera. If the virtual camera is not switched on, the programs using the camera do not get a picture (black). It would be nice if you could save a PNG or JPG instead (choose one yourself) when the virtual camera is not active. With OBS there is also a picture which is displayed in this case.

     With Virtual Camera specifically?

We have this in Wirecast 14 but this involves losing the source coming into Wirecast.

Jean-Pierre Kousz Thanks for that explanation.
In OBS Virtual Camera is an add on plugin last I checked. It might be native in their next update.

Can you show me where in the interface it allows you to select what shows when the virtual camera is not switched on, other than black?

Can you explain a scenario where you'd be feeding Virtual Camera into something but not have it enabled?

    • CraigS OBS doesn't let you select an image, it just has a generic image is displays when not on (attached).

For me, I see this feature for two uses:

      1. To help troubleshoot. Instead of black, seeing a default screen or something would remind the operator to turn the virtual camera on instead of wondering why it's not working.
      2. With customizable images, I could see this coming into to play with how we use the virtual camera in Zoom. Sometimes the Zoom session attendees go into Breakout rooms to discuss, so it would be nice to turn the virtual camera off and display a generic logo or instructions while we prep other things in Wirecast

A default image might be a repugnant as our "?" was to some when a video source was lost.

Why wouldn't you just replace your shot in the Wirecast Live Area? Is there are scenario where you think it should be different than that?

there are reasons we would want to cut to something in the live output but not necessarily send it Zoom.

Please do explain a specific example. Keep in mind this is specifically about what to send when Virtual Camera is sending to Zoom or the equivalent. Developers need to what the use case is.

      • It's pre-show and we're still testing things, but want to send a "Starting soon" slide to Zoom
      • Technical difficulties on our end, send a generic slide instead of black so people don't start logging off
      • Want to have a guest in Zoom, but don't want them to be distracted by sending their feed back to them but want to send them something that's not black to look at so they know they're connected

Bryce Seifert But all this can be done in the Broadcast Live Area by calling up whatever image you want. Why would you want the Live Area to be different than Virtual Camera when Virtual Camera is off (as per original feature request)?

Since we can only send the Live Area as the output for lots of destinations since there are no AUXs,

Because of this. If we are sending the NDI output to the talent monitor, and they want to see themselves during pre-show, but we're already live on Zoom we can't do it. This is a minor thing, not a dealbreaker, just trying to explain are workflows so I don't really care either way. We have workarounds for this.

Bigger for me for this request is that when the Virtual Camera if off it displays something that isn't black. Black is ambiguous and hard to troubleshoot.

Bryce Seifert Thanks for that. Fill out the form and explain the workflow so the developers understand why you want Virtual Camera to display an icon.

If you've turned off Virtual Camera what would you be troubleshooting? You have control to enable/disable Virtual Camera. If Virtual Camera isn't working at all then it can't display anything (icon wouldn't work either).

What I'm trying to wrap my head around is that if you can select Virtual Camera and nothing is being sent (it's not working) It's possible Wirecast wouldn't be able to send anything.

With incoming sources that disconnect (as the icon feature currently works) Wirecast is still in control of what is being sent and can replace the disconnected camera with an icon.

It other words if Virtual Camera can't send anything or it's off, Wirecast may not have control of replacing what's presented.

The main issue is that even when Virtual Camera is turned off in Wirecast, it still shows up as an option in other apps (QuickTime, Zoom). And if you select it, it shows just black. Same goes for other virtual cameras, they also show up when "off" in their apps (OBS, NDI Virtual Input, EOS Webcam). However they have figured out some way to display something when "off" in their apps, that way if you select it and see black, you're reminded "oh I need to turn this on"

     It's just seeing the driver.

You see something with NDI virtual camera?

OBS virtual camera is a separate plugin I believe so it may have its own "infrastructure." Supposedly next version of OBS it'll be integrated. It will be interesting to see if that's still available.

  • Hi again

I do not fully understand the long discussion. But I want to show you again how I use wirecast.

Sometimes I use wirecast to create my livestreams on Youtube. Sometimes I also use it to control online lectures with zoom.

Since Corona this looks different: Every day, during 4-8 hours, I use the program as a control center for controlling my video and sound at my video meetings. Why?

    a) I want to be able to control my video camera's image section during meetings (with Zoom, Skype, video tutorials).

    b) I have a green wall behind my workstation for color keying, because I want to simulate a virtual studio. Of course I also have LED key lights from Elegato at my workplace. I also use a stream deck to select the situation.

    c) I do not use the waiting room of Zoom, but I play e.g. a product video (picture and sound) via wirecast, which the conversation partners see before the meeting starts. Most of the conversation partners start their connection a few minutes before the meeting. I want to use this time to transport a message (advertising) and they know that their connection to me / us has been established.

    d) During longer meetings I always take a break after 40-50 minutes. During the break the participants can watch a picture or film and listen to soft music, with an announcement that the meeting will continue soon (like music on hold). At the same time, the clock also runs, telling them how long the break will go on.

    e) I have a standard zoom room. This is actually active the whole day, even if I don't have a meeting right now. You can enter it and see what will happen next.

Now you can see a little bit how I work with wirecast. I opened this ticket because I don't think it is optimal if the virtual camera just stays black when there is no input signal. I find this better solved with OBS (and other programs), because they at least show that there is no signal (a bit like a test pattern). And now I think it would be even better, if my favorite program would not only show a still picture, but could also define what the virtual camera shows, if I haven't switched on the virtual camera at wirecast yet.
For me it's not a big problem, but I think Telestream wants to be better, like other companies or open source projects.  I am sure that other people will increasingly use the program like me. And I am the head of a software company and project manager for software projects and I know that a programmer will be busy with it for a few hours at most.

I can also live as it is now and I will not write about it anymore. But I would be very happy about this feature, because I use wirecast really practically every day and very rarely forget to switch on the virtual camera.

    Thanks!
