Refreshing icons causing cpu spike

Hello fellow beta users. I’ll say right off the bat, loving how 15 is handling playing videos without a massive toll on my cpu.

I have noticed my cpu will spike to 100% whenever the shot icons refresh. I have live shot icons disabled in preferences, but I can recreate this by looking at a playlist, and then going back to the main shot list.   My experience is like this, things run super smoothly, all of a sudden the cpu spikes 100% causing video to stop and audio to stop for a second or two, the shot icons refresh, and then it goes back to normal. I trying combating this but locking my shot icons, but still no luck. I feel like 15 could solve all my cpu woes if this shot refresh could be disabled or handled differently.

One a different note, I noticed the last two times I’ve used wirecast (even one 14.3.4) wirecast didn’t remember my most recent documents on the opening screen, it didnt remember that my x keys was plugged in, and all my hot keys were gone! This started on Sunday, when I launched wirecast, a pop up asking to share info with wirecast came up, and then it seemed like wirecast forgot everything previously mentioned. After I reset up everything again and saved under a different document, it forgot everything mentioned again! Kinda spooky!

GPU might be a factor. What GPU are you using?

    • Also, what OS are you on: Mac or Windows? (and which version?)

  • My GPU is a NVIDA GeForce RTX 2080,

my cpu is an AMD ryzen 3700x

im on windows 10! If you need anymore info I’ll be happy to provide it!  I did reopen wirecast 15 beta today and my hot keys were still intact which is nice

    • Thanks for your feedback. I have a few more questions that might help us try to reproduce this problem and hopefully find a fix. These questions will help us understand how much graphical content Wirecast is having to process when drawing the shot bin.

How many shots are in your document and playlists?

What types of shots are they (media files, titles, live sources, etc.)?

What resolution is the majority of your shot content (720, 1080, 4K, larger)?

How many shot layers do most shots have?

How much RAM does your system have and how much of it is being used when you see the CPU spikes / freezes?

Are any other "heavyweight" programs running on your system when you see the spikes / freezes?

  • *note while getting this information  I was able to replicate the cpu spike over and over with literally NO files running in wirecast, i.e. nothing in the preview window or live window, no cameras on, no titles playing, literally nothing.  All I do is click on any playlist I have (some contain a few movie files some long 10 minutes, or some shorter as I will describe below) and wait a second or so, then hop back on the main shot list and boom cpu goes to 85 then to 100, and then goes back to normal.

From being on a playlist, and then going back to replicate the spike, I'll notice the shot icons are all blank while the spike is going on, then right after the spike, the icons refresh and have their little shot previews.  I have live shot preview off in my preferences so I dont even know why its showing me that any way.  (one icon that refreshes is a movie file and the other is just a shot with the wirecast provided Clock feature)

So in short, to replicate, go to playlist, go to main shot list and kaboom!

    heres the info you requested

I have 14 shots in my middle layer that use my  2 quad hdmi capture cards.  They capture 6 cameras, a laptop and a video game system.

the top layer has 20 titles, either .mov files with alpha channel or some titles that use chroma key.  All the titles are quick 5 or so second files.  Some have a quick wav file sound effect to go with them

the 2nd to top layer has 18 shots, essentially half a just wav files for sound effects and the other half are again short titles

second bottom is my music shots, probably 12 shots or so,

bottom shot is my scarlet 18i8

I do have a few shots that have a bit going on.  A background .mov, camera capture, title that loops, and a wav file, but in all honesty, those ones seem to work just fine with 15 now.

I have a couple playlists for the opening of the stream that feature two playlists playing at the same time.

The top layer playlist plays a 10 minute video, then a 1 minute video that ends with chroma keyed titles in the video.  (i thought it would be less strain to just include the titles with a green screen in the actual video file and then chroma key them in wirecast, vs having wire cast play the titles and audio that goes with them.)

The lower layer playlist has a camera shot for ten minutes, and another 1 minute,( i know the cameras wont show in the lower layer, i just use them as a timer so the chroma keyed  and then switches between 3 cameras in 10 second durations.

I don't believe any of my movie files are over 1080

My main 3 shots I use that don't give my cpu any trouble have 3 or 4 layers, 3 shots are live shots and 1 background mov file

I have 32 gigs or RAM 9 are in use when using wirecast

no other programs run aside from 1 google page (twitch) while using wirecast.

  • one a side note I wish the boarder around the shot icons selected for live were more noticeable., kind of find myself second guessing which one is actually selected, just a note if you wanted some feedback for someone that uses wirecast xkeys and has a lot of shots!

  • sorry for one more note, not sure if CraigS mentioned this, but I discovered that wirecast won't play the same file in a row even if they are in different shots, and even if the shots are in different layers.  I use different movie files with the same sound effects and the movie file would play with the wav file sound effect, but then when I'd play the next shot with a different movie but same wav file, the movie would play and not the wav file.  This works for just a single shot with a wav file as well. This is also true of .mov files.  This was driving me nuts, but I found if I just made a copy of the file, (as in the music folder, right click on song, select copy, then it creates a new file something like nameOfSong1.wav) then assigned it to a shot it would work just fine. This is still present on 15 and as well as 14.3.4

Lol, sorry sorry sorry, but am I crazy or can you not change the size of the live window compared to the preview window while both Preview and Live are selected in 15?  My operator really likes them the same size.

william Medved both can be sized together or independently.

    • CraigS awesome, how do you change it? I thought you could grab the corner of the shot window to resize them, but that doesn’t seem to work. I checked all the options and preferences but I didn’t see anything to change the size ( for wirecast 15)

    • CraigS hey!  Yeah i remember being able to do exactly that but since I've been on 15, that doesn't seem to work on my end, the mouse icon never even changes to give it the scale option

william Medved Yet there it is working for me in 15. I wonder if the mouse pointer is a bit finicky.
I grab right in the middle of the Preview Program to be able to resize.

    • CraigS Yes! Thanks for the little video, I thought I was crazy.  Just an fyi for anyone else reading. if you have a playlist with your main shot and you want to change the height of the shot rows, you gotta grab it by the top of the playlist tab, not by the blue of the top row.

In addition to what Craig posted above, note the Media Source Properties you have set for your .Wav file. If you have it set to Hold or Remove when finished, AND also have the box labeled "Remember Position even when not live" checked - then the behavior will be, once you've played it once, then any time you send it live again, it will remember that you've already played it, and will hold it at the last frame.  To fix this, you can either set it to loop, or uncheck the box to Remember Position...

william Medved : Is this still an issue? Are you not seeing the mouse icon change when you position it between the Preview & Live windows, so that you can click/drag to change the size of these windows? (I'm not clear from your response to Craig if his video helped you successfully do this, or if it indeed is still an issue).

    • lynn_elliott Craigs video showed me exactly which area turns the mouse to the scaling mouse icon and I was able to then change the scale of my preview and live shot.  It seems like Craig and I agree that the invisible area that turns the mouse from regular mouse to scaling mouse icon is too small. On my computer it seems like the area is only a few pixels wide. As someone that’s scaled the live and preview box plenty of times before, the small size threw me for a loop.
