Screenflow 6 Recording an application window

Hi

I'm a Screenflow 5 owner but using the trail for Screenflow 6, the 'whats new' says that it can now record a single application window like over screen capture tools but I can't find the option when going to record, can anyone point me to to it?

Thanks

Ben

Use Partial Screen Record tool. The Draw Box around what you want to record

First... excellent to have this added. I know a lot of people have been asking for it for a long time.

But the developers never do enough. :) There seems no way to have it snap to a window or set a size other than by dragging an edge / corner. In other words, no way to say I want an X * Y sized recording.

    Sniffle.

    Hi,

you can set the size though, if you come down to the screen capture  box you will see a drop down of pre set sizes and also a custom box where you can add your own size.

So for example of you wanted a size of 640 x480 or 1200x1200 you can set it.

Take a look at the image below.

  • Okay I get it now, and while Screenflow is my screen capture of choice and I love it, as a piece of feedback I would like to mention that stating it has features it doesn't have isn't necessary, it is still great. If it doesn't have the feature set of Obs or Xsplit thats okay.

Ben Gibson   OBS and Xsplit are live streaming and recording appliances. Our equivalent would be Wirecast.

dean haycox The screen sizes ensure exact fit to typical screen recording needs given typical export sizes. Michael Glasser I guess the problem with snapping is the potential for odd sizes whereas predetermining the size means you can resize the program window to fit rather than snap to odd edges.

Of course if you have a need for snapping please do make the feature request.

    CraigS

I will put in the request.

So you understand the use-case better: I often record Windows (and sometimes Linux) in a  virtual machine. I have an AppleScript set up to place the VM in specific coordinates at a specific size (1600 x 900). ScreenFlow 6 allows me to record a selection that is 1600 x 900, but being able to snap to the bottom of the window (not even the full window because there is a title bar above the VM) would allow me to select it very easily. Being able to set my own pre-set size would be even better.

Now I can set it to 1600 x 900 but then have to eyeball the exact placement. Very easy to get a pixel off. Easier and more exact to record the whole screen and then crop... I have a list of exact pixel dimensions next to my computer to do this now.

This does take a bit of time for each recording... but it is also something I have learned to accept as a part of my workflow. That and setting the document size to 1600 x 900 so if I do a cube transition or the like it looks better.

Michael Glasser Yes it would be nice if the window snapped to the preset size.

  • I have to agree... Like Ben I'm a Screenflow fan. I have SF5, as soon as I saw the mention of 'record single application window' I installed the SF6 trial, opened a sample window to snap to and record and then went looking for a control to snap to the window for recording, alas it's not there. As CraigS says it's easy to miss a pixel and I agree recording full screen then cropping is likely more accurate than positioning a set frame size. I have never balked at an SF update until now, without 'a snap to window' function the case to move from 5 to 6 is not functionally compelling for me i.e., it's not about dollars. I am keen to upgrade, I just need a functional reason to do so. All other V6 enhancements are good but the snap to single application window is key for me.

  • Hi, I upgraded to Screenflow 6 but when trying to do partial screen capture, I can't figure out how to capture the part of the Application I want to record.  I have the Application open, but clicking on the Screenflow icon in my menu bar to configure screen capture takes me straight back to Screenflow itself.  I can size and position the box within Screenflow, but I seem to have no way of sizing or positioning the box around the actual Application I want to record?  Am I missing something here?  Thanks.

In Configure Recording click on the "box."

Then after drawing your capture box click on the big red circle.

  • Thanks Craig, that's what I was doing yesterday, but now I think I see the issue.  Yesterday I had an existing Screenflow document already open, and then clicked on New Recording, intending to add it to the existing document.  Today I have no existing document open, and the bounding box is appearing on my browser rather than in Screenflow itself :)

  • SnapzPro has an Objects selector that snaps to a window object. It works fine for objects in the foreground but if you select a background object it doesn't also bring that object/window to the foreground. A little forethought overcomes this.

Another related issue is whether you want the window with all of its "chrome" or whether you want only the contents of that window. So, it might be nice if you could define a window's size in pixels and it's x,y screen position via scripting. Doing this ad hoc would be a PITA so the current scheme is best  for that.

For myself, I have always valued full screen over partial recording b/c it doesn't limit my options. For precise editing in post such as carving out a window's content, I make heavy use of Zoom from System Prefs > Accessibility. This could also be useful in the pre-recording definition of the capture area.

I also prefer full screen recording as well. Some users are concerned about the size of projects and especially so if they're using a new 5K iMac so partial screen capture can help in those instances.

I just upgraded to 6 after a long hiatus just to get the window focus feature for a project I'm about to market. I'm somewhat horrified that the "feature" has to be set up for each recording. Is there a way to make to make it stick?

In other words, I have a 1024x768 browser window set up with my web app (it actually runs on a touchscreen that size); I set up the partial window and then do a recording. I edit, save or discard it, and want to capture another with the same window, but when I record it's back in full screen mode *grimace face here*.

Danial Thom Yes it will default back to full screen mode. Please do make the feature request so one can do back to back recordings using partial screen capture.

LP will log that for you.

  • A possible workaround might be to set the resolution of your display to 1024x768 and set the web browser to full screen. All of this can be automated with AppleScript but not from within ScreenFlow which does not yet (hint, hint) support Automator or AppleScript.

  • It has just come to my attention that Apple employees themselves contributed a feature of capturing window contents to OBS. This appears to be a POC that there exist native macOS APIs for efficient capturing of window contents.

Their code is available openly on GitHub, and can be seen here. In a nutshell, the code from the PR appears to be using ScreenCaptureKit framework, which seems to be available starting with macOS 12.3.

Would Screenflow team be interested in implementing this too? It'd be really nice to have this feature finally land in Screenflow.

We are certainly interested in using ScreenCaptureKit with macOS 12.3. Our developers are aware of all the above and are following this.

I have been waiting... and waiting for this...
From day one of zoom, I can choose one window to share... if my girlfriend sends me a text message and it pops up over the window I am sharing, no one can see the text message, nor the messaging app at all, because I am only sharing and recording that single window, even if it is behind other windows.

When making a screenflow presentation, things pop up, and get in the way... then I have to start over. This should not be an issue. I should be able to share one window and never have to worry about other things popping up in front.

You guys did it with AUDIO, on screenflow 10. Allowing us to remove notification SOUNDS... but what about the pesky notification window itself???? I don't want to share everything on my screen, and I sometimes need to record something while reading from a window in front of what I am recording.

This feature should have been implemented years ago... I simply cannot justify upgrading again without this feature.
