Video Export is Black

Upgraded to High Sierra and ScreenFlow 7.1.

I uploaded a video today to YouTube. The video portion is completely black, but the audio is there. It shows properly in ScreenFlow, but the export to YouTube is no good. This happens on my full video (50 min.) and my short video test of just a few minutes (see, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzTASEhLnB8&feature=em-upload_owner )

I tried an export the same video using the automatic normal setting, and it is also a black video with good audio in the resulting mp4.

I am using video files from my Q4 Zoom camera (.mov) which has worked for the past few years.

As a second test...

I ran a test recording directly using Screenflow using my built in eyesight and audio works fine to convert to YouTube and exporting to mp4.

It seems the problem is with .mov files brought in from my Q4 zoom. These play fine on their own, and inside Screenflow, but the export file and publish to YouTube both fail.

Please advise.

Joe Miller What OS are you using?

Do the Q4 Zoom files play in Quicktime directly?
Can you link to one of the Q4 Zoom files so I can examine and test on my system?

  • CraigS I am using High Sierra 10.13 (17A365). Yes, it plays in Quicktime and Flip Player. I uploaded one of the files here https://www.dropbox.com/s/cwzux170q88pnay/ZOOM0001%20copy.MOV?dl=0

Joe Miller Downloaded the file . Opened ScreenFlow 7.1 on macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) and created an empty 1280x720 project. File > Export and used Automatic, Normal, Resolution 1280x720. The resultant encode is just fine. Video and audio all good.

Here's link to see if my encode plays on your system

  • CraigS  Glad to know it works on your system. Sadly, that does not resolve my issue. Is that the end of your support from my problem or can I expect a bit more support?

Joe Miller I just want to make sure there's no playback issue with my exported file on your system. You can playback my file with good video/audio?

I also confirmed there's no issue with your source. It's compatible with ScreenFlow. We have to confirm these things to determine what is/is not the issue. ScreenFlow 7.1 can handle the file. Now we have to figure why it's not working on your system.

Please understand I do have to do these checks. Thank you for understanding.

Let's see if it's a System or User Account issue. Create a New User Admin Account. Make sure there are no Login items in that account. Reboot and log into the New Account. Start ScreenFlow and create a New Blank 1280x720 document. Import a short Q4 Zoom file. Make sure it plays. Export the file with the Automatic setting and check the results.

  • CraigS  Thanks. I appreciate your hanging in there and working through this. some tech support just drops out when they cannot immediately reproduce the problem.

To confirm, yes the video you uploaded played back on my system.

I will work on the next test and report back.

    Thanks.

  • CraigS FYI, I did delete my current install and reinstalled from scratch. I created a new file and imported one of the .mov files. The export resulted in the same black screen with audio. I will still run your test as described.

Did you initially create this document in macOS Sierra (10.12) prior to upgrading to macOS High Sierra (10.13)?

Did you opt into using the new file system (APFS) that is enabled by default when installing macOS High Sierra, or did you uncheck that and continue to use HFS?

Did you create a new partition when installing macOS High Sierra or upgrade over macOS Sierra?

  • Rory Maloney My mac has a SSD. And according to the Apple support, macOS High Sierra on the Mac volume of a solid-state drive (SSD) is automatically converted to APFS.

Thanks. Since the file plays fine but the issue is in export, to would seem something is impacting your encoder.

As another test you can try exporting Manual ProRes 422.
Another test may be to try local export Automatic Fastest and then do a test Normal and see if that has an impact.

We've narrowed the issue down to NVIDIA mobile GPUs and we're working on a solution to this issue. There is a workaround available, adding any Video Filter will cause the video to display correctly within ScreenFlow. I suggest adding the filter 'Vibrance' with a value of 0 and you should be able to edit without all of the visual artifacts. Please let me know if this does not resolve your issue.

  • Rory Maloney That fixed the problem. I can both export and publish to YouTube and the video is working. Thanks for the temporary fix.

Justin Hays It's the NVIDIA GPU. We're working on the fix. Rory's trick is the workaround in the meantime.

  • Ya, the workaround is doing the trick for me.

For reference, I'm having quite graphic related issues in high sierra. Not just with screenflow.

Justin Hays I suspect developers and Apple themselves may be in for another round of updates to fix things.

CraigS  The 'Vibrance' workaround did not work for me. I have an NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2GB, FWIW. Hope the fix comes soon. Had I known this would be an issue, I would not have upgraded, but did so after I read SF 6.2.3 was High Sierra compatible. :(

amidoc Please report this since it may indicate a different issue given that Vibrance set to 0 did not work. ScreenFlow Support Form and note the workaround did not fix the issue.

Where can I download Screenflow 6?

I never had an issue with that version.

gabe garza On the linked page see Previous Versions

Keep in mind if  Vibrance workaround isn't working for you, you might have a different issue. If it's different then you should work with us to establish the cause.
