MacBook Pro 2018 CPU or Graphics card limitations

I have a 2018 MacBook Pro (see attached image for specs). It is working with Wirecast but the fan hits the roof quite fast and it sometimes drains the battery even with the power supply on. If I use Wirecast a little bit more advanced with moving text, a green screen background that is video based then the computer has trouble coping.

Would it be a solution to buy a GPU like the new Black Magic eGPU (updated version see image)? Can Wirecast use it or will the computer still have to work as hard.

Or will the only solution be to invest in a iMac Pro or Mac Pro to get things moving nicely?

I find the most problems are related to text or transitions not moving smooth which provides a very poor viewing experience.

  • Wirecast doesn't support eGPU at this time.
I"m not sure what's impacting your fans but you should check Apple's Activity Monitor for CPU use if your fans seem overactive. Please make sure you're on the current version of Wirecast which is 13.0.2.  Your post doesn't provide any details that would indicate Wirecast is the cause.

  • CraigS Thanks Craig, When I check the activity monitor i can see that the graphics card is moving upp att 100% as soon as I work in Wirecast with cameras on. I ordered an iMac Pro yesterday and hope that it will runt Wirecast smoothly.

  • Michael Oddane I use an iMac Pro as my main streaming computer. 8 Core with the Vega 64 GPU.

  • CraigS I purchased an iMac Pro with Vega 56 8 Gb. It seems to be working ok. Reaches about 60% of the GPU capacity while running Wirecast so should be sufficient.

    Thanks for your help.

  • Michael Oddane Good to hear. You're welcome of course.
