Multichannel audio in mixer with different channel names?

I'm working on configuring my rig for a hybrid conference coming up and I'm using Wirecast as the hub for nearly everything. I've got a 12 channel usb mixer that works fine into Wirecast, but I want to see each channel in the WC audio mixer. I can make it do that by adding a bunch of layers in the audio shot (setting each layer to a specific channel), but they all have the same name in the audio mixer. I need them all to be live simultaneously too so making each one its own shot isn't going to work either.

My workaround is to use Loopback from Rogue Amoeba, make each input channel a virtual input and then map the ports. The result is the each channel now looks like a its own audio source, not a single source with multiple channels. Now I layer them in a single audio shot and rename each source. That shows up in the mixer with each labeled channel.

But I don't want to have to resort to that if I don't have to as it's a bit clunky. If it's not possible, I'll submit a feature request.

If you're controlling the audio levels through the hardware mixer, then duplicating the function in Wirecast Audio Mixer doesn't make sense as it doesn't operate as a remote control.

Sorry but this doesn't make sense given the mixer is not a visual representation of the hardware mixer. It's its own level control device. You're already doing that with the hardware mixer.

Perhaps if you wanted to use Wirecast as a remote control for the mixer it would make sense but then you'd get into the complex area of mixer remote control support protocols.

It's a hybrid event. I'm mixing on the board in the room, and I want the ability to add FX (namely a noise gate) and mix the levels of each speaker into the feed in Wirecast. Also, the mixer only uses the preamps when it sends in via usb, so the levels might be way off from the room vs the feed. Hope that makes sense.

I'm not sure I understand this. I don't want to make any assumptions. There's a lot of variety in mixer and level control stages (and that's one of the challenges).

Think of it this way. I'm using a physical mixer for an on-site conference, and then using the USB interface from said mixer (pre-amps only, no fader control or eq) into Wirecast as I also want to mix and maybe eq and add effects to each channel). It's a Panel discussion setup with 5-6 mics on a head table.

So I have a single audio "shot" in WC with a layer for each audio source channel on the interface. WC sees all 12 and I found I can make layers, and turn on and off different channels so 1 is 1, 2 is 2, instead of just one input that merges all channels. This works, but I want to label them Chan 1, Chan 2, Chan 3, etc. By default they all have the same name as the main Audio shot. I have a work around, I was just hoping there was a way to rename the layers and have them show in the audio mixer, but it doesn't seem like it.

When I get home I can send some screen shots as the interface isn't with me currently.

But the problem is if we design for one user's needs it may be a problem for another user whose mixing board doesn't work that way.

Let me back up then, pretend I'm doing only a virtual conference but I'm just using an interface with no volume only preamps and I want to mix on screen in Wirecast. I can get a single audio shot that merges all the audio into one stereo feed, or I can do what I did, which is add a layer in that shot for each channel so they all show in the mixer. But I can't label them differently, they all have the name of the parent shot on them. Hopefully that simplifies it some.

I think I need to find a simple way to explain it, and add some screen shots in a feature request.

      Brian Peat Like this?

      In a single shot:

      • Level control for each channel in Wirecast (without having to make a layer for each).
      • Name for each channel in Wirecast Audio Mixer
      • Ability to add FX to each channel separately in Wirecast Audio Mixer.

      Brian Peat
      Currently, if you do this

The 12 channels in one shot show up as a single channel in the Wirecast Audio Mixer

You have to do this to get all the channels in the Audio Mixer.

CraigS Correct, and I don't mind having to do all that, but as you can see, all the channels have the same name :)

You're welcome of course. Developers may be interested in this.
