I'd have to see what you're doing since it doesn't sound like standard behavior. Generally, it would paste to the first available track based on the scrubber.

Is how is "first available" defined? Bottom-up? Sometimes that's nestled down into a mess of clips. It would be great to be able to put it exactly where I want it - like, right-click/paste directly into a track, rather than let it choose.

If you want specific track targeting that would be an interesting feature request. Certainly, fill out the ScreenFlow Feature Request Form and give a use case example as the developers like to hear about those.-
This behavior has apparently not been addressed yet by the developers. I would not put it in the category of a "feature request", but rather a "bug fix". How can it get elevated to catch the attention of the devs, besides having more users vote here to promote it as a "feature request"?
I'll provide an example. The attached screenshot shows a timeline. The clip highlighted in yellow has just been copied (command-C) and I'm about to press paste (command-V). Where will the pasted in clip go?
The sensible answer would be: into the same track from which it was just copied from.
The purported answer (from above in this thread): into the bottom-most track.
The actual answer: a NEW track is created, above all the existing tracks, and the clip is pasted into this new track.
The fact that it's ADDING new tracks at this point, rather than pasting into one of several open tracks, elevates this issue to a bug.

I have this same issue. I just want it to paste onto the track I've clicked on, or the one I copied the media asset from.

Yes! Coming from years of working in DAWs this behavior is really irritating. It's so much easier to stay organized if the clips would dropping into the tracks I direct them to.

John Hinchey Make sure you fill out the previously posted feature request form and ask for track targeting. The developers may be considering this so they're looking at user interest.

If I’m editing on a smaller screen (15”), this random placement really impairs the workflow. Not so much of a problem finding the clip on the iMac 27, however, still adds another step if I want to move the clip to a specific track. In that vein, would be welcomed if I could simply click on the specific track where I want the clip to be placed, then voila!.

Leigh M The investigation numbers are internal but it allows me to check on status and post when there's an update. Developers generally don't want product feature roadmap public.

CraigS OK, thanks for clarifying that - sometimes developers make issue tracking at least semi-public, but that's fine if they don't.
Following up on my other comment here, the unpredictable behavior of where a copied clip will be pasted makes this feel more like a bug than a "feature request", per se. Do I need to file a separate support ticket for that, or is it possible to change the nature of the support issue to "bug"?

Love ScreenFlow and use it much more than Premiere these days. Track targeting would really speed up the editing process. When adding video, music, graphics, and/or annotations all seem to randomly select or add the track they go to.

I get what you mean that sometimes users might see something as predictable, but actually there is a pattern there... however, I have been doing digital editing for a long time, and this is a pretty basic expectation for an editing timeline. So if it is a deliberate pattern by the developers, I'll say unequivocally that it is a bad pattern.

As a followup on this - I got an answer back from the support team, where they acknowledged this issue, but said that with the technology of their current "platform" (by which I suppose they mean the framework or engine they have built Screenflow on) that they cannot fix it.
That's a bummer, to have such a basic expectation of a non-linear editor be broken in this way.
