Streaming To Facebook Group Drops

Hi Telestream Community,

I'm using Wirecast to stream to my Facebook group. My streams are about an hour long. Now twice it looks like the stream cut off around 30 minutes into the broadcast. How can I fix this?

Attached are screenshots of the stream this morning that cut off at 32 minutes plus my wirecast stream settings. I have residential 1 GB Google Fiber.

I just did the "Optimize Connection" not sure if that's relevant.

  • Sorry to hear about the problems you have been having while live streaming to Facebook Live. You mentioned that the stream stopped early twice. Did both of these events happen recently? How many times have you been able to successfully live stream to Facebook Live? What has changed about your setup (i.e. software updates, hardware changes, network changes, etc.)?

I noticed that you are live streaming at 60fps. Are your camera sources 60fps? If you have no sources coming in at 60fps then there really isn't any need for Wirecast to do the extra work to double the number of frames.

What is the CPU usage of Wirecast and the overall system CPU usage while you are live streaming? CPU usage above 70% can cause frame drops, audio / video sync issues and loss of connection.

     Yep.

I've done 3 live streams in the last few days. One that was 45 minutes or so successfully finished. The other 2 got cut off around 30 minutes.

No changes that I can think of.

I'm using a Canon 90D EOS 4K source going through a Camlink 4K USB adapter for my web cam. My other source is a 5k iMac screen.

Ok I have switched to 30fps to test that.

Does Wirecast log this? Is there a way to review this easily after the fact? Happy to do logging for my next live stream tomorrow if helpful.

If helpful my computer specs are:

  • I did a 51 minute stream today that did not drop. The only tweak I made was switching from 60 fps to 30 fps. I'll keep monitoring and see if the stream drops tomorrow.

    • Harry Whelchel Thanks for the update. My initial suspicion was that the system might have become overloaded at some point. The 1080p60 was the red flag for me. Even with a robust system like yours it can have impact on the CPU.

The Wirecast support documents will log the overall maximum CPU usage during a live stream. If you like, you can generate a set of support documents after your live stream and look for the phrase "Maximum CPU usage during output". To generate a support document select "Send Support Information" from the Wirecast Help menu and once the Wirecast Support Assistant is open, click on the "Save Report" button.

You can also use the Apple Activity Monitor found in the "Applications/Utilities" folder to monitor CPU usage during the live stream. If you are not familiar with the Activity Monitor, Apple has this online users guide ( https://support.apple.com/guide/activity-monitor/welcome/mac ).

    • Robert P I was able to save a wirecast report. It had a zip with a bunch of files. Which file inside has the CPU info?

    • Harry Whelchel Sorry, meant to say the "Wirecast_Trace_Log" file.

Here's the `wirecast_trace_log.txt`. I don't see any lines about max CPU. I ran the report hours after I livestreamed so perhaps I need to run it right after I turn off the livestream?

If you run a speed test are you showing any packet loss?
Even a Gigabit connection can have packet loss issues that result in disconnects.
Do your Wirecast Stream Indicators go to yellow or red before the disconnect?

    • CraigS the last 2 livestreams have not had disconnects and were anywhere from 51 to 59 minutes. I think switching it from 60 fps to 30 fps did it. I'll let you know if the issue resurfaces but for now I'm satisfied.

Harry Whelchel 60 really does push things a lot harder than most people realize. Good to hear 30 is working well.
