Too Large File Size

Hi,

The file size of my screen recordings are too large after exportation. When I lower the resolution to have a lower file size, the screen won't be readable. I must save it as a 4 GB file (for a 90 minute recording) and then use HandBrake to lower the file size without losing its quality (HandBrake makes is 170 MB). Is there a way in Screenflow 9 to export the recording as a low size, high quality screen recording file?

  • I have the same question.  I edit a lot of webinars that start as 350meg MP4's and just doing a little editing I end up with 1.4G.  I was lucky to buy an 18core iMac with a ton of memory, but when I upload to Wistia, after their processing the 1080 version is like 200meg, with no loss of quality.  I've studied the frame rates and everything I can see, but why can't I setup screenflow to do exactly what Wistia.

I've also used Handbrake to do same, but so much extra work.

I really need the entire workflow.
Screen recording depends on monitor size.
Then there's the imported file, the frame size, the export settings.

Ultimately file size is the duration times data rate.

There's no reason to use HandBrake. You set the data rate in ScreenFlow's export settings and that impacts the file size just like HandBrake. We use the same code HandBrake does. It's just a different user interface for the most part.

If you record a large screen and scale it down it will lose resolution. You should start with a monitor set to the same size you want to export. 1080 monitor for 1080 export.

Use the same settings as HandBrake. We use the same codec. ScreenFlow has a simpler user interface.

I believe Screenflow should be more user-friendly (intuitive) when it comes to file size. A rookie like me should not be stuck in these details. I'm certain that there is a way to make Screenflow much easier to use in this respect. Hope this voice is heard and new features would be set in place in the future updates.

Kyle ScreenFlow does show you a file size estimate.
The formula to change that is a "universal" duration times bitrate equals size but maybe not universally known. That might be better handled in a tutorial my guess.

Kyle You can see how it changes as I change the data rate so it is very interactive.

Kyle We also have this in the User Guide.
Perhaps this needs a more complete explanation so users know more about how to control file size.
