Screenflow 7 crashed and lost all my work

I was working on a project for a few hours. I was editing 2 recordings that were recorded with Screenflow. I was trying to copy and paste a bit of the project at the start and all of a sudden Screenflow 7 crashed. I opened my project and none of my work was saved. Just the 2 recording files as seen in the photo included. Is there any way to recover the work I did? It took me a long time to make.

    Did you save the project?
If it crashes before you save the project, it might be a bit more "vulnerable."

What OS version of Sierra and what are the specs of your Mac including free drive space and RAM?
Given the length of recordings, space on the hard drive and RAM might be a factor.

  • I'll be monitoring this thread as well. I had Screenflow 7 crash on me 5 times in 30 minutes. I've talked with support and they will be looking into the issue. Never had the issue with ScreenFlow 6. It may help the developers if you save your crash report and email it to them as well. You can get the crash report from Utilities, then Console, then User Reports. Check out the attached image. ScreenFlow 7 has crashed on me quite a few times in the past few days. We may or may not have similar issues. I submitted a support request here: http://www.telestream.net/telestream-support/screen-flow/contact-support.htm#

Brandon Craft the crash reports will show what software executed task is the cause.
Tarush Gandhi  filling out the form he linked to and subsequently sending in the crash report would be useful. In your case long recordings may be a factor.

  • CraigS Long recordings may be the culprit.  I had a ~30 min recording that kept crashing.  If that is the case, I hope it can be resolved.  I had recordings over an hour on version 6 and it still worked well.  Can't remember the last crash I had on 6 actually.

Brandon Craft Free hard drive space and RAM? I'm thinking those might be factors. See how support responds after examining the logs. If Tarush Gandhi  can also fill out the forms and send us the crash logs we may find a common element.

  • CraigS plenty of hard drive space and RAM usage is minimal. Does version 7 require more resources as compared to 6?

Nothing that would cause crashing but of course that's what investigating issues is all about.

  • CraigS   Brandon Craft  *I got help with contacting Screenflow Support and got my work back, however since there seems to be a problem with crashes I will reply giving the information*

I didn't save the project before it crashed.

    OS: 10.12.3 (16D32)

Processor: 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5

    Memory RAM: 8 GB 1867 MHz DDR3

I have 731GB available out of 1 TB and 1.22GB free of Memory

Included an image of my crash reports with ScreenFlow.

*Quick note on how I got my work back, After checking my autosave information, I went on terminal and copy pasted this command:

defaults write net.telestream.screenflow7 SCDisableAutoSave -bool NO

That command is to enable autosave. After doing that I opened ScreenFlow and there was a popup that said there is data found and I can choose to recover it or not. Once I clicked recover all of my work was back.*

  • I have just been editing a video for quite some time, and suddenly a similar problem to what  Brandon Craft said is happening to me.

ScreenFlow started crashing a lot when I tried to do certain commands, like copy and paste something or even press the space bar to pause the video.

When Screenflow crashed and I tried re opening it I got 2 pop ups as you can see in the image.

When I pressed recover nothing really was recovered because I saved my project really soon before Screenflow crashed.

What was recovered was the little work I did not save.

I also included an image of all Screenflow's crash reports.

  • Tarush Gandhi  I'm no developer of software engineer, but it appears that we may be having similar issues.  Multiple crashes while editing longer clips.  I'm sure they'll figure it out.  In the meantime, I've resorted back to version 6.

Tarush Gandhi Good to hear support helped you get your project back. The crash log will help us investigate the cause.
Brandon Craft Do post any response from support as well.

  • Brandon Craft Yea I agree we probably do, however for me I had this problem also in ScreenFlow 6. But in ScreenFlow 6 whenever I made an edit it would say that the project was edited so I would be saving my project every edit I do... Just wondering how do you downgrade back to ScreenFlow 6?

CraigS Yup and hopefully you guys can fix the issue 👍

FWIW (maybe fellow Googlers?): ScreenFlow 7 kept crashing on my wife's 12" MacBook, but no issues on my 15" MBP. After some debugging we found out she was using iCloud sync for Desktop/Documents, and storing the SF documents on the desktop.

When we moved the SF documents from Desktop to a random folder in the home directory we went from a crash every few minutes to none at all.

So, at least in our/her case, the problem seems to be iCloud Drive. (We've sent the reports, just posting this because I had found this thread myself when checking for the issue. Maybe this helps someone.)

  • Tarush Gandhi  It appears that Telestream is able to reproduce my crash, but not EVERY time.  When I want to remove a section of my screenrecording (umms, long pauses, screw ups, etc.), I trim the video at two points.  I then remove that section and drag the remaining section to fill in that gap.  Though it's not 100% reproducible, tech support did notice my crash when I would drag the section too far accidentally, which overlaps the sections, with a transition.  However, I don't want a transition, so I quickly drag that section back out to connect the two, end to end, and that's when I get the crash.  Video shows what I'm trying to describe.

Martijn E Yes, something about iCloud and Dropbox syncing might impact ScreenFlow if saving directly to those folders.

  • Brandon Craft it seems like this might be one of the things that causes ScreenFlow to crash for me. I do not notice the specific things since I edit pretty fast but I do the same type of movements so I think we may have a similar issue.

Tarush Gandhi If you can confirm it by causing the crash, please do fill out the form and report it or, if already reported, send an email to support with your case number reporting your suspicion.

  • CraigS Is there a bug open and actively under investigation to fix this? I just lost all of several hours of work. This, also, makes backups somewhat problematic.

Jesse Trucks It's always possible there is more than one cause. Please do fill out the form I posted above and include the specifics of your crash. Include full system specs as well including other programs running at the time.
