Which software (Mac) is recommended to convert from Inter-frame codec to Intra-frame format

What software is currently used (for Mac) to convert files from Inter-frame codecs (good for delivery ie. MP4) to Intra-frame formats (good for editing). I found and old Telestream article explaining this but it is years out of date. The article said choose these formats for editing: ProRes, DV, M-JPEG, JPEG2000, Animation, x264 (lossless mode).
I understand the current version of Quicktime doesn't allow this anymore (lossless mode).
My needs are small and occasional, so the software needs to be reasonably intuitive.
I typically would be inputing mp4 files @ 1080p 2 channel which are not in a desired format for editing, and am looking at outputting ProRes, DV, M-JPEG, JPEG2000, Animation, x264 (lossless mode) files as per the article: https://telestreamblog.telestream.net/2012/04/save-yourself-frustration-use-editing-formats-when-editing-2/

  • The best codec for editing is Apple ProRes. Right Click on the video file in Finder and there's an option to Encode Selected Video Files. Apple ProRes is one of the options.

  • Thanks CraigS. Yes that works, but I have the option to Preserve Transparency (Apple Pro Res 4444/LPCM) or not (Apple Pro Res 422/LPCM). Any advice. Cheers

Paul 4444 is the highest quality and it preserves alpha if you're creating a keyable object (logos, titles, etc.) but 422 is visually lossless and fine for most post-production work.

CraigS  Thanks for the reply Craig. All good. And on a plus side, at least I will have time to play with this, as our country has just gone back into total lockdown. Cheers
