HLS Encoding to Akamai

As of May 2022, Akamai will no longer be supporting RTMP ingest.  Just got that bombshell from the Akamai team today.   They will only be supporting HLS ingest...that is wirecast creates the HLS chunks that get sent to Akamai and they will distribute to end users.  I cannot find any information that would suggest the wirecast will do the hls encoding.  Akamai said they thought telestream was going to be supporting this.   I have 15 licenses of wirecast and this would obsolete wirecast if HLS is not supported.  Any info?

  • We're working on this WIRE-19232 for Akamai and generally WIRE-2387

  • Have there been any updates to this? Akamai is pressuring us to update as soon as possible. Does Wirecast 14.3.4 support HLS?

Not in that version. We're working on it though.

    • CraigS  I have been told by the team that most likely not going to be version 15 either.  If this info has changed please let us know

Dave Dunham Not in the initial release of 15 so far but it'll happen.

    • CraigS I guess the big question is whether or not it will make it in time for the Akamai deadline in May

Dave Dunham We're aiming for that.

    • CraigS Well I hope a good chunk of time sooner as we stream with wirecast on a daily basis with 15 licenses and we won't be able to wait until the last minute to make the switch over to a new software or hardware solution.  I would think we would need a solution in place by end of March at the latest.   We are here to beta test with akamai anytime

Dave Dunham Developers have to make sure it's fully functional and tested before release so that's always critical.

    • CraigS Understand completely....fingers crossed, we don't want to find a different solution if we can avoid it, we love wirecast and have for 10+ years

  • Have there been any updates to this? I'm hoping I missed an announcement since we are getting down to the wire on it.

Curtis Kapus If you mean HLS to Akamai it currently presents problems given the resources needed to stream the number of encodes needed.

BTW can you point to recent notice of Akamai end of RTMP ingest (which is not the same as ending RTMP delivery)? Most CDNs take RTMP ingest and convert and distribute with HLS.

    • CraigS Yes, thanks, that is what I was referring to. Wirecast had previously said that they would be attempting to meet Akamai's May 2022 deadline for switching over to HLS. Is this no longer true? We love Wirecast and hope to not have to replace it (and our multiple licenses!). But if we do, I'd rather know now so that we can begin the process before we are forced to by Akamai.

Curtis Kapus It seems other software encoders don't support HLS out either in my checking. I believe our hardware encoder Lightspeed Live Stream does.

      Packaging and Delivery (Live Stream)
HLS, DASH, CMAF, MP4, MP3, RTMP/S and ATS
      MPEG TS Unicast/Multicast
      HTTP Origin
      SRT
      HTTP Push to CDN (Akamai)

    • CraigS OK, thank you I will take a look at that. I agree that software solutions supporting HLS are hard to find!

Curtis Kapus We're still investigating Wirecast solution to this but don't have a timeline as of yet.
