Need Audio Suggestions for In Studio & Rendezvous Shot
How can I get an in studio host to be able to talk freely with a remote guest?
We shoot a little talk show in our studio using Wirecast. The guests are 6 feet apart, we have got 3 cameras and everything looks and sounds great.
BUT
We sometimes have a guest that doesn't want to come into the studio so I have to bring the remote person in via Rendezvous. This is all well and good until the host needs to hear what the remote person is saying.
If I have the remote guests audio on a speaker, then the systems pics up the audio in the hosts mic and I get reverb and it sounds like crap.
I've tried to have the host log in via Rendezvous on their phone so they can communicate via rendezvous, but they hear themselves even if Live Audio is off in the Rendezvous dashboard.
There has to be a way to do this that I'm not thinking of.
I'm going crazy.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

CORRECTION: I've tried to have the host log in via Rendezvous on their phone so they can communicate via rendezvous but I lose sound quality as they are using the phones for audio. I have tried using the studio mic and the phone just to hear, but they hear themselves even if Live Audio is off in the Rendezvous dashboard.

A mic with a highly direction pick up pattern would be best.

We are doing something very similar here. I think your issue, like mine is that your are combining live studio guests with remote. The ONLY way I have achieved this is by using ear pieces for the studio guests to hear the remote guest. If you use a speaker in the studio, it will feed back into the studio guests mic and cause issues. Earpieces avoid this. Also, we send the main program output to the remote guests. For in studio, we send a different mix using the Mac's aux output. We disable the monitor feature for each in studio mic so they don't hear themselves in their earpieces. This works really well and we are able to achieve a mix with good audio and no echos for all guests. Hope that helps.

Hi guys, sorry I haven't checked this forum in a bit. We have been having some success with our shows though. We are sending the monitored output (minus the in studio host's audio) to the host's earpiece in the studio via a headphone distribution amp. Our floor director also hears this. In our control room, we listen to the program output via our SDI Blackmagic Design output running into an HDTV. We picked up a secret service-like mono earpiece that we can swap out for our different hosts. So it is one with a clear tube that connects to the audio adapter. The clear tube part is the swappable part... about $10 each I think. Now that the audio is all figured out, we are working on bandwidth issues to insure we get our guests "in" best we can. I'll post about that in another thread. Good luck!
