Biggest (but hidden) feature to new version 6? NO LAG

Long time (vs 2) paid user of Screenflow. I upgraded from 5 to 6 immediately,  because I wanted whatever improvements it offered.

After a couple days of hard testing, here's my review: GET IT. IT REMOVES ALL LAGS IN ALL THE WAYS THAT MADE YOU PULL YOUR HAIR.

Sure, the other features are fine. For me, I can live without them. The best thing, for me, is the removal of all of the pauses and spinning wheels that daily made me grind my teeth. Zoom the timeline magnification? Instant. Add mp4 clips? No problem and no need to convert to prores or wav or whatever and time-consuming nonsense I used to have to do. Giant 30gig files? No spinning wheels. Sliding back and forth along the time line? Happens without a pause.

Version 6 still moves my scrubber from where I was editing (why? Don't move my scrubber. Ever. Really, ever! I can move it manually if I need to) if I copy/paste in a new text box.

I get that PR and marketing departments would never suggest, "hey, I know: bullet point that version 6 no longer lags!" But for this 10x improvement in speed, this is definitely a beautiful upgrade and worth the $34. Two thumbs up.

  • Agree. The audio waveform generation is much (I mean MUCH) better. It's almost instant.

Scott certainly make that feature request about the Scrubber.

  • Very curious what video card you have. I have a 2012 MacPro Tower, with an ATI graphics card. I wanted to upgrade to an Nvidia card, because my Adobe software prefers it, but Telestream Tech support warned against it. Just curious to see if your speed is on a Mac Native card. Thanks...

Telestream's position is that one should only use Apple certified compatible GPUs (compatible with the given tower) otherwise there's the possibility some issue may occur. We don't support GPUs computer combinations that Apple doesn't support.

  • Thank you, Kristián.

And, thank you, CraigS - I did get that same response in my email question. I'm just disappointed. I use Adobe products SO much, and they SO want an Nvidia card and I feel the slowness with my older video card on things like Premiere and After Effects. I use the Adobe products for freelance work, and for teaching (which is why I use Screenflow - to create training tutorials on those subjects). So, I get stuck deciding between the two companies, and it's a rock-and-a-hard-place decision.

Screenflow is the best thing out there for this, on the Mac side - but I wish it would play more nicely with off-Apple certified GPU's, so I could use ALL my video software. I can do so with your competitors, but I prefer your software.

FORTUNATELY, the upgrade price is reasonable, and the GPU upgrade is still pending, but once I have to do that, I'll likely have to drop Screenflow - and I just wish I didn't have to...

We also have to consider where Apple goes. While many still use Towers, they are legacy, the last model being nearly 4 years old.

You can attempt nVidia cards but you'd have to keep in mind we can't officially trouble shoot or issue fixes.

Even Adobe has worked through AMD GPU support on the Mac side because of Apple's direction.

  • I can see your point, but I also do know that so many of my Adobe pro students and friends have declined to upgrade to new machines for as long as possible, since Apple keeps making these limiting decisions, like lack of extensibility of their newer models. They, like me, are upgrading CPU's, GPU's (we don't have to upgrade RAM, we've already got as much as our computers can hold) for as long as we can hold out.

But, I do see your point...

I did buy the upgrade to v6, and when I get a chance to upgrade to the NVidia, I'll weigh the risk.

Thanks. Still the best Mac Solution for screen recording and tutorial making there is!

If memory serves I believe users may have reported that certain features didn't work but ScreenFlow did run.

When you get the card do run through some of the ScreenFlow features and report. I'm sure other users would be interested.

  • Will do. Still need to save more money. HOPING I can test with both cards installed at the same time, so I can test switching monitors for issues, but my PCIe slots are kinda full... I'll update when I know more. Thanks!

Stephanie, I have a tower: Mac Pro (Late 2013), 3.7 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5, with a AMD FirePro D300 2048 MB graphics card.

By the way, Trevor at Telestream support asked for a sample of what I'm referring to , and I posted a 6-minute show-in-tell here: http://tinyurl.com/jbz2jl9 in case anyone else would benefit from it. I'm really hoping this becomes a feature fix in the near future.

Scott very good example of the issue in that video. Thanks for showing that.

  • Scott - I agree - that's a big deal I've not even talked about yet. I've kinda gotten to expect that behavior with Screenflow, unlike ANY other video editing program, which DOES keep the playhead where you'd placed it - but I never did like it. Thank you for pointing that out.

Your AMD card is a nice one - but my tower's older and can't use that one. That was what my post's about. There aren't any decent ATI/AMD cards to which I can update my machine (that're worth it, anyway), but there're lots of NVidia cards..... but they're not Apple approved.

Craig - I'll definitely let you know - when I get those savings up.

BUT I second Scott's request! Fixing that'd be GREAT!

Stephanie Gans don't forget to fill out the form to request the change. The developers look at the number of requests when prioritizing.

  • Thank you ALL for allowing me to ask that video card question here - it had been the only post that came close to what I was asking for - and that also pointed out the problem I'd had. I realize now that my etiquette was bad, adding a different point to this original post, and I apologize. You were all very kind to allow me to do so without berating me, and answered my question as to what you were using. I was so frantic, I hadn't realized I'd done that and again... I apologize. I've added a "2nd" to this playhead moving issue on the Feature Upgrade page - and I DO hope we get to see that fixed.
