Audio Capture doesn't work on new MacBook Pro

After using Wirecast for years, when I bought a new MacBook Pro and installed the latest version of Wirecast, I am unable to get audio capture to work — whether a YouTube video, Zoom call, or anything else.

Here are my specs:

  • OS 10.14.1 Mojave
  • Wirecast Pro 11.0.0
  • MacBook Pro 15-inch, 2018; 2.9 GHz Intel Core i9
  • Input source: Screen Capture, with Capture System Audio checked (I've tried both monitor and window settings)
  • Wirecast preference settings for Audio Interface: I have tried System Default, Telestream Audio Capture, and MacBook Pro Speakers with no success

The screen capture shows up, but no audio comes into Wirecast. I replicated all of this on an older MacBook Pro running Wirecast version 10 and the old computer has no problem with the audio capture.

I've read about problems with Apple's new T2 chip, and tried installing the latest Screenflow version (8.2.2) and then uninstalled and reinstalled the latest Telestream Audio Driver within Screenflow. That allows me to successfully capture audio in Screenflow, but does not fix the Wirecast problem.

Let me know if you need any additional information to diagnose this problem!

  • CraigS i have tried every compnfiguration and all your recommendations and no luck.  By the way Rendezvous works to bring people in, but Rendezvous has so many issues.  Try screenshare and it locks up and you have to keep reloading and re entering your name.  It’s a horrible product compared to Zoom.  Any other suggestions?

     Hi Alan.

Tomorrow is a weekly community stream talking about Wirecast... The focus is on the new beta - what's new under the hood. Jens Jarke  will be co-hosting with me. The good news is that there are some improvements in Rendezvous. Still more tweaks required, but I'll share some news about the improvements... and how to work around some of the current limitations. Feel free to join, and we'll try to work on some of these issues together.

  • @CraigS , can you assure us that fixes for these glaring challenges (no audio capture for Macs that have been on the market for more than seven months, and unreliable conferencing with Rendezvous that is not dependable enough for important live streams) are actively in the works and will be made available soon? I (and probably many others) purchased Wirecast to conduct live streams that include remote guests, and these ongoing issues hamper the ability to do that. Thanks for all of your help!

  • David Bereit As Greg can attest, much work has been done on the Rendezvous front. Always keep in mind there are aspects of remote video communication and WEBrtc that are internet and server-side and we can only control certain elements at certain times. Skype can have its issues as well.

Again Apple has made changes that make this a difficult challenge. In this case, such radical hardware change, months is an extremely short time. Developing the driver and the proper user interface is extremely difficult. The T2 chip and the macOS handling require a new approach. This is not simply a patch.

  • Thanks,  CraigS ... I really appreciate your diligence in helping us. I look forward to hearing from Greg about some of the Rendezvous progress. I guess what made me think the T2 solution would be coming soon is that it so quickly was resolved in Screenflow. Thanks!

I've brought that up. Implementation still is a bit rough in ScreenFlow and some more things need some work especially for live use. There's some significant latency in some cases for example.

  • CraigS and Alan Weinstein  - sorry for the delay getting this together, but the two-day lecture last weekend took a lot of me... It was stressful during the weeks before trying to get Wirecast working, with long nights of testing different settings, Behringer, software, searching through forums, etc... It all crashed on me and once the adrenaline of hosting the event was gone, I felt a bit off...

We were able to test a few different options at two different stores here in Ireland and at the 11th hour, we found something that allowed Wirecast to get sound in and therefore allowed us to stream from the event 👍

We recorded a video with the details and settings used - going to send it to Alan as soon as it is ready (compressing at the moment). I see that there is a version 12 now available - should we update or wait until it is stable?

  • Sandro Graca tnx for the video. I was wondering if the HDMI drive you mentioned was from Black Magic so let me know if that rings a bell. Since the Pre-sonus worked I'm willing to bet that my Mackie mixer board (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VUU77XW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) would have worked also. I bought that back in 2016 to make a mixed minus connection to bring Skype into Wirecast. That worked great and then Wirecast got better and I was no anger necessary but I'm willing to bet it is doing exactly what the Persons is doing. By the way Wirecast version 12 does not have that fix. Not sure I mentioned to you but I did to Lorne that I fired out how to do a Rendezvous with PPT and you can bring like 7 people in so we could have made that work but as you say a great learning experience. With all that said here is my favorite Dan Sullivan quote, "7. “Getting results doesn't take much time at all. It's not getting results that takes up all the time.” Congrats!

Wirecast 12 has some important fixes. It should be stable. There's a few new features as well. One important one is actually regarding audio control in Rendezvous calls.

  • Hanlon Robert LoopBack and DanteVia would be another option.
