Screenflow 8.2.2 crashes Macbook Pro (Mojave 10.14.3) while recording...

The last few times I have tried a screen recording, with video and audio, about a minute into the recording my MBP just goes black, i.e. shuts down and restarts.

Not sure what's going on...

Any ideas???

Generally, 8.2.2 is working well on 10.14.3 so I'd need a bit more information. RAM, hard drive space, sources, what your recording are all possible factors. Please provide enough details as if you wanted someone to exactly match your system and what you're doing at the time of the crash.

Given the description, it sounds like a configuration issue since ScreenFlow generally can't crash the computer, only its own application.

  • I confirm I have the same issue. I had the Mac on latest Mojave version reboot the mac 10 times in a row. It happens when I recorded screen + audio + camera.

I finally disable webcam recording and it stopped rebooting the mac.

Attached is the system report regarding my Mac.

Mickaël Rémond Thanks for providing complete system details. So it only crashes when using webcam (built in Facetime camera)? I see you are on a newer Mac model with T2 chip also.

Please go to Mac's System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy tab and look at Camera and see that ScreenFlow it checked. Also check Microphone for the same thing.

  • CraigS thanks.

    I'm on a 2018 MBP (13" touchbar) with 8GB RAM, 256GB HDD about 50% full.

Screenflow crashes after about 1-min when I'm recording my Facetime video, plus audio, plus iPad connected via USB-C (I run Quicktime to bring the iPad to my screen in "new movie recording").

I have followed your steps above in Privacy settings.

    James Veigli
    Disconnect iPad from computer.
    Reboot computer.
Try recording desktop and Facetime with audio.
Tell me if you can record without crashing.
I suspect the iPad and Quicktime are the variables so keep that all disconnected.

  • CraigS thanks...

Disconnected iPad (no other devices attached), rebooted.

Tried recording ONLY Facetime with audio and all ok.

Tried recording Facetime with audio AND desktop... then the computer froze and rebooted itself after a couple of minutes.

It's essential I use Screenflow with the desktop and/or ipad... so need a fix here.

Perhaps I need to fall-back to an earlier version of Screenflow?

    What to test next?

That sounds like a config issue because that's the common use case. In fact ScreenFlow itself generally wouldn't impact the entire computer like that because the OS is protected against that.

Are you using FileVault or do you have any security software or virus checkers running on your system?

    Like
  • CraigS , yes FileVault is turned on... not going to change that.

    No other security/virus software running.

Is there a solution here? (other than falling back to an older version).

    Thanks.

Can you turn that off temporarily just for testing?
I just want to confirm if that's the issue. If it is, we can look at fixing.

The only other ScreenFlow version that works on Mojave is 7.3.2.
You certainly can test that to see if it behaves any differently.

Please try disabling File Vault and see if it improves things.

  • CraigS Problem is that disabling and reeanabling file vault is heavy, just for a test. It will decrypt your whole disk, and then reencrypt it. It can put your laptop in heavy CPU consumption for hours / days, if I am not mistaken.

I cannot do that on my primary laptop.

Mickaël Rémond I certainly understand the problem is we can't easily verify if that's the issue.

You can fill out the form and send us the crash log and we can investigate.

If it's not obvious from the log then we may get back to you for further testing.

James Veigli  Huon Snelgrove  Mickaël Rémond
Each of you on Mojave 10.14.3?
Each of you using File Vault?
James posted his Mac model. Can the other two of you do the same?

  • CraigS I posted a system report earlier, but yes, I am using Mojave 10.14.3 using File Vault. Mac is 13-inch 2018, with a T2 chip, 16gb RAM, 2.7 Ghx Core i7.

Mickaël Rémond Thanks, I forget you had attached the specs.
Let's see what  Huon Snelgrove has. Perhaps there's a pattern.

Both you and  James Veigli mention recording computer audio.
Can both of you try recording the desktop (no cameras, no mics) and disable computer audio and tell me what happens.

Guilherme de Assis Brasi Please answer the same questions I've asked the others. If the computer is crashing (that's what the others are reporting) there's usually something other that ScreenFlow only involved.

    Are you using FileVault?
Please describe what is running and what you are recording.
    Are you recording computer audio?
Are you using an external audio device?

Please describe what is running and what you are recording.

I was running only Screenflow and Microsoft Word. I was recording my screen (with MS Word), camera and áudio.
Are you recording computer audio? No, only audio from MacBook Mic.
Are you using an external audio device? No

    Guilherme de Assis Brasi
Thanks for that. That helps me see what the potential issues might be.

So it seems the common elements in this thread are
    ScreenFlow 8.2.2
    macOS Mojave 10.14.3
MacBook Pro 2018 (MBP with T2 chip).
    Recording Facetime and Computer (video).

    How consistent is the issue?
    Every time, only occasionally?

Given the other posts in this thread, I wonder if the Facetime webcam combined with Computer video is part of the issue.

    Please confirm the following:
In Mojave > System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Camera
    Is ScreenFlow enabled?
Also check under Microphone and tell me if ScreenFlow is enabled there as well?

This is just to confirm that ScreenFlow has permission to access Facetime webcam and built in Mic.

Please test recording Microsoft Word without using Facetime or built in Mic.
    Does the computer still crash?

Please test recording only Facetime and buil tin Mic but NOT recording the computer desktop at all (disable that).

the issue happens on macOS Mojave 10.14.3 and 10.14.4.

    Every time.

    Please confirm the following:
In Mojave > System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Camera
    Is ScreenFlow enabled?

    Yes, it's enabled.

Also check under Microphone and tell me if ScreenFlow is enabled there as well?
    Yes, it's enabled.

Please test recording Microsoft Word without using Facetime or built in Mic.
    Does the computer still crash?

No, it doesn't. Without using Facetime Camera and built in Mic I was able to record a 10 minutes video with no crash.

Please test recording only Facetime and buil tin Mic but NOT recording the computer desktop at all (disable that).

    Does the computer still crash?

Yes, it does. With Facetime Camara and built in mic enabled and without computer desktop recording the computer crashes before 7 minutes.

    Guilherme de Assis Brasi
    Thanks for that detailed report.

So the issue seems to be:
    ScreenFlow 8.2.2
    macOS Mojave
    2018 MBP with T2 chip
Facetime webcam causes the entire computer to reboot within 10 minutes.
When not recording the webcam recording progresses as expected.

Please fill out the form with the description and a link to the video you posted.
When you get the case number post it here.

    ScreenFlow Support Form

    We'll start investigating.

Yes, it does. With Facetime Camara and built in mic enabled and without computer desktop recording the computer crashes before 7 minutes.

Let's see if it's the Mic or Webcam.

Test with build in Mic only and desktop.
    Does it crash?

Test with Facetime webcam only (and no audio at all) and the desktop.
    Does it crash?

Since the T2 chip MBP is something everyone has in common and the T2 chip manages sound processing I want to see if the build in Mic is a factor for you.
