Rendezvous is locked at 640x360

Is there any particular reason why Rendezvous is forcing low resolution for one-to-one connections?

I'm using 1080p sources both in Wirecast and on remote speaker and Rendezvous does not lock to 1280x720. Not even once for 5 minutes straight testing. It is locked at 640x360 by inspecting WebRTC internals. I've tried multiple browsers without luck. Shouldn't one-on-one Rendezvous connections utilize the full bandwidth and allow for HD resolution based on the documentation?

My network is not the bottleneck since I'm on 200/20 Mbps network and all the tests ran on the same computer.

Hardware is also not a bottleneck. CPU barely touches 6% usage.

I'm on Mac OSX Monterey 12.3 using Wirecast 14.3.4.

Any advice would be helpful,

Thanks!

The guests' connection stability is a factor. The maximum frame size for Rendezvous is 1280x720 under the best connection.

From my Logitech C920 in Google Chrome on iMac to Wirecast 14.3.4 macOS 12.3 on MBP.

  • Hi Craig,

    Thanks for replying.

Are you also receiving a 1280x720 stream on Chrome from Wirecast? I strangle to get anything above 640x360. Tried so many configurations, browsers, etc.

I also have a Logitech C920 1080p cam and also tried with broadcast source.

Angelos Michalopoulos That shot I posted is from the Rendezvous guest source. It's 720p.

    • CraigS I mean the quality that the guest sees from Wirecast. You can observe it by opening webrtc-internals on the browser you use. For me it is mandatory that the quality of the host is also 720p at all times.

Wirecast may use a lower quality back to the guest to limit bandwidth use. This will also be the same in our new "Music mode" in Wirecast 15. The audio back to the guest is much lower than they are sending if they enable "Music mode."

    • CraigS I see. Thanks for letting me know. I do believe however that a future option to maintain the same quality on both ends would be nice. Especially for one-to-one connections.

Angelos Michalopoulos In 15 (you can see in Public Beta 2) we've added statistical reporting the host can see for the guest connection. With that (knowing there's a good connection) one might one video return control. Investigating feature request WIRE-20237

Keep in mind that changes in bandwidth on the guest side may increase possible problems in Rendezvous. It's also possible that the send from the host may impact all guests and that could create problems.

Angelos Michalopoulos Developers are thinking about this as a user option given the potential it may create bandwidth issues for some.

    • CraigS Exactly. A user option would be awesome. I would love to see it on Wirecast 15. Personally I had at least two cases where I would use it instead of Zoom for concurrent events

Angelos Michalopoulos I can't speak to if/when as development and testing may take some time.
