Apple Silicon / M1 Support

I bet one of the biggest pain points  most of us have is slow export times. I've got a JUICED macbook pro and it's still painfully slow.

So - I know this is early (and please don't make me submit a feature  request) - but are there plans to get Screenflow to work on the new apple silicon machines?

If so, could you shed light on how hard that would be for Screenflow? Since it's a native app, does it just compile over? Or is there significant work that needs to be done for it to work?

They have touted faster export, and I'd go out and buy a mac mini today if this meant I could speed up my exports.

thanks!

Yes, we have been building with a developer's model and we'll be getting a release machine as soon as they're available (soon as long as they don't go out of stock).

Currently, ScreenFlow does not work under Rosetta 2 so it will not work on Apple Silicon so hold off buying to use with ScreenFlow.

We'll let people know as soon as we have a clear target release date.

CraigS Hi. I was just about to hit the buy button on the M1. But see Screenflow is not yet compatible. I'm not familiar with timing on these transitions. Is this a 1-month or a 6-month timeline until we can use Screenflow with the M1 chip computers?

      Thanks.

Celina We're fixing and testing now. Testing may expose the need to make additional fixing. I'd expect sooner rather than later though.

    • CraigS oops I have just bought an Airmac M1 - bought and installed Screenflow - and it crashed every time I launched it... will wait for the updates - and go use it on my older Mac..

  • After my mid-2014 mac slowed down to a snail for video work, I switched to pc and instantly regretted it (although adobe is solid on there). The pc alternatives to ScreenFlow are horrible (Yeah, I'm looking at you camtasia). I was waiting for the new mac mini with the M1 and ordered it right away. But now I discovered my favourite tool "Screenflow" doesn't work yet. :(
I am so excited to get back to using Screenflow. I will likely update my licence soon as I see you are working on a rebuild and testing, That makes me so happy to hear!

Should I upgrade my licence now or are you going to change the version and charge a new price?
    Thanks

    Alex

Alex Sebastian The Big Sur and Silicon update will be in the ScreenFlow 9 series so you won't have to wait for an upgrade, which will be down the road a bit.

We are working on an M1 compatible version of ScreenFlow. When to upgrade hardware depends on all your needs. ScreenFlow will continue to work on your older Mac in the meantime. One can certainly have an older and newer Mac and move things over as compatible versions come out. The same can be said for operating systems.

Looking forward to this as well. When I try to use screenflow on my new m1 mbp, it reboots it. Thanks for working on it.

    • CraigS Thanks we understand. Any chance it will be this year still? My old MacBook Pro is simply too slow to keep up which is why I bought the MacMini M1.

We're already in process of testing and tweaking so we hope it'll be soon even though we can't give an exact date yet.

  • yup i just bought one for more space and faster speed to get my videos out only to find that there are major issues using screenflow 6 - dont want to upgrade because now I Have come here I realise it doesnt matter what grade you have it aint working on this new applemac M1 which defeats the object of working on it.  I cant use old computer because its so full that when I hit media to import the videos the videos dont show up.  Now I am wondering why did i buy this applemac or should I Be sayign how come these software enthuisiasts are not ahead of the game

ScreenFlow 6 is no longer supported. It was last officially supported on High Sierra.
Only ScreenFlow 9 will be Big Sur Apple Silicon compatible. When OS changes and especially when hardware changes by Apple, that requires new programming.
This is a general rule, not specific to our company or software.

Delete software from the drive. Start with media files. System drives should always have at least 20% free space. Again this is not specific to us, it's a necessity for the OS and Applications to have temp space on the system drive. Never use the system drive to store media files long term.

  • Any update on this one ... it's worrying how slowly ScreenFlow are moving with this transition. I have a few licenses and this is impeding my businesses move to hardware which would otherwise offer a massive productivity improvement.

Is there a specific holdup? can we have a rough ETA? days, weeks, months?

Adrian Cantrill Better to have something properly tested when released than to release something too soon not fully vetted. It'll be very soon. We want to make sure it'll work to your satisfaction so we're doing some final tweaks.

    • CraigS I agree, but is there a reason you guys/gals didn't apply for the developer hardware so you could have been doing this testing before the live hardware release. There are loads of other vendors who have apple M1 native on day 1..

Adrian Cantrill We've had the hardware as soon as it became available to us. There is significant work that needed to be done and the publicly available hardware also has differences, not in the developer hardware. There are many vendors that will be delivering well past us. Releasing something premature would not be a good user experience so we are testing thoroughly.

    • CraigS Great to hear. I went and bought one anyway and it obviously doesn't capture (I saved my old machine for that) but it edits lightning fast and I've had no other issues so far.
