Screen Flow - importing .srt file

I am trying to add .srt file to my screenflow video to add in closed captions.

However when I import the .srt file, it appears that everything is just clumped into one piece, and does not work (see attached image). Any suggests?

Also, happy for any other suggestions about adding in closed captions to my videos (without typing) ( I export to .mp4 files and would like to add in closed captions. I am able to generate a .srt file, but seem to have problems importing as displayed in the attached image)

Thank you in advance for your help and suggestions!

Perhaps there's an issue with the SRT file timing.
I'd need the SRT file so I can test in a "dummy" document to see what happens. If you attach it I can have a look at it.

    Hi there,

There does seem to be a bug with importing SRT Files. I have tested several projects exporting SRT file from Premiere Pro CC 2023 (23.0.1) and then importing the SRT (Edit>Captions>Import SRT File) to Screenflow.

Bug: The Caption Track is generated for the correct time, but only the first 10 seconds get populated as subtitles/text and the rest of the Caption Track is blank.

The Workaround Fix: Create New Screenflow Project

    1. Export Timeline in Screenflow as Lossless-ProRes (also works with Web High, etc)
    2. Create a New Screenflow Project
    3. Add Exported Video to Media Library/Timeline
    4. Import SRT File to new Screenflow Project
    5. View Captions Track
    6. Edit captions if necessary
    7. Save & Export Video

Personal Note: Would be great to get this fixed in a future update or even better add auto-captions to save a step of having to use Premiere or another tool to generate captions. 👍

    Attached:

    • Sample SRT File that I experienced issues with (exported from Premiere Pro).
    • Screenshot of Caption Track (blank after 10 seconds)

    Happy Holidays 🎄,

    Mike

Mike Murphy Any editing done in ScreenFlow might impact the SRT timing. One test would be to create a single audio track (can be any "dummy" audio) of the correct continuous duration in ScreenFlow and select it so the SRT attaches to that.

Reading your steps 2 and 3, it's not clear to me from your screenshot is that of an unedited video/audio track. I assume step three is importing such into the new document.

I created a video/audio screen recording just a bit longer than the apparent duration of your captions and they imported and populated as expected in ScreenFlow 10.0.8. My timeline is 30fps since that might be a factor as well.

CraigS My screenshot was only the  partially-filled Caption Track after importing the SRT file from Premiere  into my open SF Project.

My SF 10.0.8 Project had a full audio and video track. I have tested exporting Audio only and Audio/Video to generate the captions/transcription in Premiere and I get the same results when I import the SRT file into my SF project that has edits, etc.

The only way that I have been able to get the Caption Track to populate to 100% is to create a new SF Project and then add the rendered video/audio to the Timeline and then import the SRT file again.

SRT import works every time when I create a new SF project. It has never worked when I try to import the SRT file on the Timeline filled with edits that I exported the video/audio from to generate the transcription from Premiere.

Or importing the unedited exported file or creating a "dummy" track as I did would work also.

Can you send us that project (Dropbox or an equivalent link would be good) so we can test it? You can use the forum's private message system to send me that link.

If you do this before the end of the day today I can have the developers examine this tomorrow.

    I discovered what is happening:

    1. When importing an SRT File, the captions only populate up the first split in the audio track and then blank after.
    2. When there is a full track of audio with no splits (as you noted with the dummy audio track), importing the SRT file works.

Bottom Line/Fix: There must be one full track of audio with no splits before importing the SRT File.

Yes, audio should be continuous without edits as you note. I believe the developers are aware of this but I'll bring it up.

      CraigS

Thanks. It is clear to me now how to make it work and realize I should have searched the user guide first for confirmation.

      • In the Screenflow User Guide when searching for 'SRT':'ScreenFlow imports the captions into the first audio clip on the timeline' so appears to be by design and not a bug after all.

      Moving Forward Workflow:

      • When finished editing, I will export Audio Only from Screenflow and re-import the audio file into the project so there is one track of audio with no splits on the Timeline.
      • Generate Captions & Export SRT from Premiere
      • Import SRT file to Screenflow

      Note/FYI:

      • Nesting the Camera/Audio Track is not a working solution.

      Thanks,

      Mike

I'm thinking we might be able to make that easier. My own thought would be to have the ability to add an "audio slug" for the full length of the timeline and then link the captions to that.

Yes, that's ideal because the audio is continuous. We should probably have that documented as the current suggested workflow.

Good ideas. There's definitely some room for improvement with captions especially since they seem to be growing in importance with all of the short-form content. All good things in all good time!

    Cheers,

    Mike ☘️
