Screenflow Not Recording Audio from a DAW!

I just purchased ScreenFlow for the purpose of recording my workflow on my DAW (stands for digital audio workstation - essentially, place in which audio is compiled, composed, mixed, and mastered.)

I was informed that ScreenFlow (through Soundflower on older versions, but now with its own audio telestream plugin ScreenFlow has you download), was able to do this.

It seems that the audio can not be recorded for ScreenFlow in my computer because it has to run out to an AD/DA audio interface. This is imperative for my computer and program to work, so not utilizing it is not an option. It essentially plays an in between of "audio in -> interface -> mac -> daw -> mac -> interface -> audio out"

I'm not sure where the ScreenFlow app comes into play. The odd thing, is I have an external microphone that is attached into the interface that is utilized as my voice over mic for what's recording. This is picked up through the ScreenFlow application, and recorded under 'microphone audio', yet computer audio running through the interface is not - even when 'computer audio' is checked. It's almost like the daw has to send the signal to the mac that it's sending out this audio, but along the way, the audio signal can't be solely highjacked by Soundflower. When you're recording, you think this is happening, because you hear all of your audio, but that's only because the audio out is going daw-> OSX -> interface -> my headphones.

I have a really whack work around that I'm trying to use for picking up the audio signal, but it's in no way my preferred method due to quality, limitations, and usability.

If anyone has any suggestions whether they know DAW's better than I do, or knows the ScreenFlow software better than I do - both are highly likely, please let me know!!

Also, for what its worth, I'm using Cubase 9.5 as my DAW and My iMac is running Mojave 10.14.2.

This is probably much more irrelevant to the audio situation, but I'm using an Audient ID22 as my interface, but have a Universal Audio Apollo x6 arriving next week.

My DAW audio is finally being recorded by following your suggestions,

Are you playing a file in your DAW or using a live input?
Can you provide a screenshot that shows your DAW is 44.1kHz?
Can you change your DAW and Audio Interface to 48kHz and verify it is then recorded correctly in ScreenFlow?
That would verify the  Telestream Driver sample rate is the issue.
Which Mac Pro, 2013 or 2019?

Al They may get back to me on that. It depends on their testing and verification. Sometimes they'll have a build for a user to test. Sometimes they just get the fix out the door.

When I change my project and audio interface to 48kHz it does playback in the correct speed,

Thanks. That should confirm the sample rate is at issue.

  • Very useful topic thanks and here is what I am trying to do if anyone can help:

1/ Recording an instrument  via mic going into Clarett 2Pre Audio Interface which is USB connected to MacBookPro running Logic - and a second monitor

2/ Can  ScreenFlow Record this many sources audio and video?

    a)  MBPro Screen ( with Logic Arrange window running  Logic recording )

    b) External monitor running the Score of  the part being played live over the Mic

    c) An HDCam monitor recording the performer at the same time

    e) The audio from Logic

ie  The resulting Screenflow Document would  have the following recordings as options to cut between

    •Video of Logic Arrange Window

    •Video Logic Score Editor

•Video of Performer via separate Camera

•Audio from Logic ( but *not* using Telestream Interface - ie using the Clarett 2 Pre Audio?

     * * *

I have tried a simpler version of this - recording just the Logic Arrange Window ( ie the desktop) + computer audio ... But I am monitoring  via headphones from  the Clarett 2 Pre and when Logic  is set to Telestream nothing is sent back to the head phones.

I have recently acquired Rogue Ameoba Loopback - but dont know how to set it up to address this issue from a signal flow point of view.

For the simpler version I have also tried video recording the performance  to my iPhone, importing it into Screenflow, detaching the audio, importing the Logic good audio and lining up the wave forms then deleting the iPhone audio.. but this is a long way round would be better to do it all in one.

ScreenFlow can record one external video and audio source (which can have multiple tracks). Recording computer audio depends on what you send to the ScreenFlow audio driver.

You may have to set Logic to monitor while recording. I know that's required in GarageBand. A DAW may do this to prevent feedback into an open mic (if you were monitoring on speakers).

  • So we're all having a variation of the problem. I don't understand why Telestream will not just fix it - once and for all. I've upgraded three times to the latest and greatest version of Screenflow, and yet, recording audio from Logic X remains nothing short of brain surgery.

Eugene Brown and we have added a feature specific to DAW Recording. Please Read the instructions

Note that no one has posted in this thread for a year and half. We did fix it. See screenshot below for Daw Support in Preferences Advanced.

Keep in mind that while we made this improvement in ScreenFlow we can't change how macOS hardware/software handles system sound.

    • Eugene Brown You can record logic very easily into screen flow - A simple  solution is to use rogue amoeba Loopback. Well worth it - especially if you do a lot of online zoom teaching streaming Logic.

I have made dozens of Logic QuickTime videos thanks to screen flow, Recording any mix of audio direct from logic. (For examples Check out my Instagram @adamgharmonica)

PS Screen flow gives you a lot of audio preferences when you set it up - i'm surprised that you're having trouble recording audio… I think you can probably select your audio interface as the sound source in screenflow - you may not even need Loopback

NB - The one thing I cannot do and I was going to do a separate post about this CraigS - But perhaps it's part of this discussion: I've tried screen recording a zoom call with screen flow and nothing I do allows me to record the audio transmitted by the other person… Or persons.

Each time and no matter what audio option I select in screen flow audio preferences no audio comes out-however update: I put a post on zoom for musicians about this and one of them has recommended audio hijack, so some kind of aggregating devices needed… But I would love to hear from CraigS if there is perhaps a suggested telestream way to record audio Direct from a zoom call into screen flow

Set Zoom Speaker to Telestream Audio Capture to record guests.
The local host may need to set audio into ScreenFlow separately.
You must have the correct version of Zoom for your Mac (Intel for Intel Macs and Apple Silicon for M1/M2 Macs.
If you have third-party software that also hijacks audio that may interfere.

Generally, the issue is not ScreenFlow but an issue with the setup.
In the attached video I've started ScreenFlow and then started GarageBand.
GarageBand Output Device is set to Telestream Audio Capture
    Play music in GarageBand.
It is captured in ScreenFlow as evidenced by the video and audio.

This is macOS 12.4 and ScreenFlow 10.0.6

You may also notice that no one has posted in this thread for nearly a year and half. As you can see in my other post I just made on this thread we did "fix it" by adding a DAW Support button in Preferences.

  • Thanks CraigS for these detailed solutions - great work! 🙏
