Screenflow 10.0.6 doesn't recognize new iPad connected to old iMac for screen capture
Hi --
I have an iMac (Retina 5k, 27-inch, Late 2015 w/ 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1867 MHz DDR3, AMD Radeon R9 M390 2 GB) running BigSur 11.6.7 . I would like to be able to use the iMac to record the screen of my iPad (Gen 4 2021) via ScreenFlow. However, the iMac will not recognize my iPad. By this I mean that neither Quicktime nor ScreenFlow recognizes that my iPad is connected (no iPad choice appears in the drop down menu) when I use a cable to connect my iPad to the iMac. The cables I've tried so far are (1) an off-brand USB 3.0 A to USB C cable and (2) an (off-brand) USB C - to USB A adaptor with a USB 3.0 A -- USB 3.0 A cable. Neither has worked.
I have been able to use ScreenFlow with a family member's iPad (Gen 3 2018) using the Apple USB 3.0 A to lightning cable that came with the iPad. I have seen other troubleshooting sites stipulate that "the official cable that came with your iPad" must be used to connect it to an iMac for screen capture. However, my Gen 4 iPad only came with a USB C to USB C cable, which will not connect to my iMac USB 3.0 A connection without some sort of non-Apple cable or adaptor.
Is there a particular combination of Apple adaptors and cables which will definitely allow my Gen 4 iPad to connect properly with my iMac?
Thanks in advance for your help..
Best,
Jen

If Quicktime doesn't see it, it may well be the adaptors otherwise it could be related to the OS or iPadOS. Please do make sure you've updated that. Also when you first connect an iPad to a Mac you have to give it permission to "Trust" the computer. If that doesn't happen or is is rejected you may need to reset the iPad.

Thanks CraigS ---
I will definitely watch the video you linked!! I am very curious about the differences between all these cables.
Here's some new stuff to report.
- I saw a 4th gen iPad and newer MacBook, via USB-C to USB-C cable, successfully use Quicktime to record the iPad screen. So my iPad should be able to do the same.
- I borrowed my son's brand new MacBook Pro, and made myself an account on it (so same Apple id's) --- however, Quicktime on that computer did not recognize my 4th gen iPad Pro connected USB-C to USB-C.
- I thought it was odd that my son's MacBook Pro didn't ask me if I trusted the iPad, so I went to iPad Settings>General>Transfer or Reset iPad and reset the location & privacy settings. This didn't make a difference. (I was not prompted about trust, nor did the MacBook quicktime recognize my iPad)

wondering if I need to contact my school IT to have the iPad settings changed?!?!I think that's a good idea. Sometimes the iPad (and iPhone) needs to be reset to get the permissions to work.
