X-Keys and Big Sur

Is there any update when the Wirecast X-Keys controller will be compatible with MacOS Big Sur?

  • After our investigation WIRE-17996, we've found X-Keys needs to fix their SDK (the tools they provide developers for integration). We've contacted them but they need to hear from users. Please do contact them

    • CraigS I got the same response as Drew when emailing them. It is pretty frustrating that each side in this situation is saying that the issue is because the other party is not implementing some kind of fix. I know I'm probably in the minority of people using Wirecast and also the X-Keys controller, but it seems like it would be a good idea for those of us who spent close to $700 for a control surface for it to actually work in the most recent version of the ecosystem's OS. I just want it to be figured out so we can upgrade to Big Sur and this is the only thing preventing me from doing so. All that to say, I don't really care who is to blame, I just want a resolution to the problem.

Chad Huckaby We're talking to them but it truly is their SDK. Sorry.

Chad Huckaby You're welcome of course. These are their developer SDKs. They need to update their macOS SDK for Big Sure. We can't do that as it's their developer tool.

  • I emailed them with the link you provided and mentioned what they needed to fix in your previous post and here was their reply. "We make the hardware, which has not changed, but Big Sur made changes that requires a different technique to access the data. We are working with Telestream to have them implement this in their software. Until they successfully implement the changes I’d echo their warning on their website". We'll definitely hold off updating but hoping a fix is coming soon. Not sure what the issue actually is as I'm not remotely a programmer but just hoping it gets resolved somehow. This post wasn't meant to cause any drama as we're very happy with our Wirecast program and xkeys. I just wanted to share their response in hopes it could possibly aid in a resolution perhaps. Thanks!

     Yes.

The SDK is theirs, not ours though. We can't change their SDK. We are certainly talking to them about this and what needs to be done.

  • Just FYI.  I emailed X-Keys technical support and was advised that a meeting took place between the PI Engineering and Telestream about two weeks ago.  PI Engineering advised that the meeting was productive and that the underlying issues of incompatibility with Big Sure were identified.  They echoed the statement by others on this thread that the responsibility for resolution was with Wirecast software engineering - not PI Engineering.

  • So where does that leave us?  Is wirecast addressing this or is Xkeys?  I was very hopeful when I saw v14.1.1 released but it doesn't address this problem.

  • Just adding my voice to this issue. The X-Keys hardware control solution was why we opted for Wirecast for our streaming studio set up. Nothing beats hardware controlled switching in live shows, and whilst X-Keys isn't perfect, it does elevate Wirecast above other software solutions.

We've held off updating on main streaming computer to Big Sur for this reason.

Really looking forward to hearing both teams working together to solve this.

    Thanks!

    • CraigS Just had a major live stream yesterday with multiple camera inputs, audio inputs and multiple videos and graphics in wirecast. XKeys handled it all great and all the keys correspond to their proper command in Wirecast. Great job!

  • An interesting note, if you load this 14.1.2 beta on Catalina, the xkeys controller does not work.  I'm sure the xkeys mapping is hard coded for what it expects to see from the os and as we now know that is different for Big Sur, Catalina does not work.  SO, anyone who still has both platforms active, be careful.

Please don't use the beta. We released 14.1.2 full version today. Please download that and test in a new document.

    • CraigS Thanks, that seems to have solved for the issue I mentioned, although it could also have been an issue I was having with companion.  Either way, the released 14.1.2 IS compatible with Catalina and is working correctly at this point with xkeys.  My testing ( 4, 2 hour long events) with big sur has also been successful to this point.
