MSVCR120.dll problem

Clean format of disk followed by fresh install of Windows 10 and only one other program - Desktop Presenter 2.0.6. When I run it, I get "The program can't start because MSVCR120.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."

Just asking - anyone else getting this error?

  • This is for Windows 8 but it's from Microsoft and may hold for Windows 10

  • Install Visual C++ might help also.

  • No joy with the steps mentioned in these articles. Installing the Visual C++ redistributables also didn't help. I have a working system that has msvcr120.dll so I copied the file from there to the problem computer. Now the error message appears only one time, whereas before it was three times. I'll keep looking for a solution to that, but it seems strange that Telestream would not just include this dll in their installation file for Desktop Presenter.

  • This should be part of a normal Windows install if you buy a computer with Windows installed. If you do your own Windows install you would need to determine what to install. It's installed using the Windows installer, not something Wirecast or Desktop Presenter would install.

Personally, I think software that overwrites Windows components risky because Windows is updated frequently so programs can be creating havoc by installing outdated or conflicting components.

Contact support via the form and we'll go through what should be installed by Windows.

  • This particular computer is a custom build so Windows was installed from Microsoft's installation media. I understand the point you make as to what is or is not installed by Telestream.

Thanks CraigS very much for your replies here. From the lack of any other users chiming in, it looks like the issue with MSVCR120.dll is unique to my machine. I'll take anything more up via the support form.

  • I ran into he same problem at a school district installing Desktop presenter on several of their Windows 8 laptops. Their IT groups spent several hours finding a solution. I think they finally copied the file from another computer then had to use the windows Regsvr command to register the DLL on the system. I'm not sure of the exact process they used, but they got it working..

  • Thanks Dave - there may be hope for me still!

  • I've custom built as well using Microsoft System Builder's Operating System so one often has to download additional components that normally come installed with a prebuilt PC. These issues are not uncommon. Search  "MSVCR120.dll missing" and you'll many articles on this.

Usually Visual C++ fixes it. Perhaps you should uninstall Wirecast and Desktop Presenter completely first. After installing Visual C++ install both Wirecast and then Desktop Presenter and see if it detects it.

  • Had the same problem. According to Microsoft "The C runtime libraries (CRT) are no longer shipped as a Windows shared component" and Visual C++ Redistributable Package needs to be a part of installation process. Unfortunately installation of "VCRedist_x64.exe" did not solve the issue on my computer.

I just ran a search, found the DLL as a part of OneDrive program (in my case the folder is "C:\Users\igor\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive\17.3.6517.0809"), copied "msvcr120.dll" and "msvcp120.dll" from OneDrive folder to Desktop Presenter folder ("C:\Program Files (x86)\Telestream LLC\Desktop Presenter") as a quick fix and everything works just fine.

  • Igor G That's great to hear. Thanks for that tip.

  • And we are working on how to make this easier to get this installed.
