3 bugs in ScreenFlow 9 that should be addressed urgently

  • Hitting space bar in succession for quick transport start / stop freezes the entire program, to the point where you can only force quit. This happens to me 20-30 times per session currently, and it's driving me insane. It's very hard to work like this. I never had this issue in ScreenFlow 8.

  • When choosing the “Import Recording to Timeline” option, the Cursor position is being ignored. The new clip will be pasted somewhere on a random track. Sometimes, it would only appear when you drag it from the Media Library - and then you end up with two identical clips. Not as severe as the other bug, but very annoying.

  • Hitting return key after entering a numeric value (e.g. for Volume) doesn’t put the value out of focus. You always have to navigate away with your mouse, or use tab key. Not a new bug, but one that always “bugged” me ;)

We'd need complete details on this.
    ScreenFlow 9.0.1?
    macOS?
    Mac computer model (be specific).
How quick? (you may be having keyboard-related issues so please check your system preference relating to keyboard and accessibility).

Please explain this option. There's various add to timeline functions but no import recording function.

Hitting space bar very rapidly works fine for me. Playback starts and stops repeatedly and there's no freezes.

This happens on ScreenFlow 9.0.1, yes. I'm running 10.14.6 Mojave on a Mac Mini 2018 with Blackmagic eGPU. See specs here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/3jcaiszutgxtcrl/Screenshot%202019-11-28%2017.37.11.png?dl=0

Hitting the space bar 2-3 times in quick succession is usually enough to make the entire project freeze and crash. It can only be restored after force quit. This currently happens 20-30 times per project, which is why I switched back to ScreenFlow 8 for the time being. I have to note once again that this issue does NOT occur in SF 8, hence why I think that my keyboard isn't the culprit.

I'm referring to the menu that you see after you complete a recording. Of course ScreenFlow gives you the option to import your screen capture / camera recording to your timeline there. See my screenshot (sorry it's in German, as ScreenFlow won't allow me to switch the language to English): https://www.dropbox.com/s/72eascbazdg9hn5/Screenshot%202019-11-28%2017.26.37.png?dl=0

^- Whilst it is good that ScreenFlow offers you direct import of your Recording to the timeline of your project, it proceeds to put it at a random spot, in a random track, ignoring current playhead position.

  • I am also having the quitting issue after using the space bar. (9.0.2 on Mac). Same thing, I have to force quit and lose any unsaved work. To add to that, often after this crash (and sometimes unrelated to that), I attempt to restore the unsaved data...but once I do that, as soon as I close this file, the entire app will crash. I've had to re-save a document under a new name, just to close all the windows...and I have to keep an extra fake document or two open (blank one just to have it open), as it seems if I have multiple, upon closing the last one or two also crashes the program. I also never had any issues like this with v 8...but I can't go back because I just recorded a 20-lesson course and they are all in v 9 and there is no way to save backwards.

Erica Gamet We'd help troubleshoot your issue but you have to provide more information. It's not clear at all why you're force quitting to begin with.

it happens only to people who are fast at editing. Specifically, the space bar appears to be the culprit. When you hit it too quickly in succession, ScreenFlow will beachball and not respond to anything anymore, so you have no choice but to force quit & restore. This issue is specific to ScreenFlow 9, I cannot reproduce this whatsoever in ScreenFlow 8.

Gregor Beyerle Disconnect the eGPU. Reboot the computer. Start ScreenFlow. Create a new document with new recordings. Just a hunch but that may be contributing because ScreenFlow is dependent on the GPU and may not be compatible with the eGPU.

  • CraigS Thanks for the suggestions, will try! Erica Gamet - Just out of curiosity...do you happen to use a eGPU in your setup also?

  • Gregor Beyerle I have no idea...I'm working on a MacBook Pro (late 2018) with touchbar. It happens when I'm hooked into my Apple Cinema Display or just on the laptop itself.

CraigS The freezing I referred to is, as Gregor says, after editing too quickly with the spacebar, mostly. I have to force quit, and if I open any document that was open during a freeze, I'm not able to close that document without the app crashing. My only fix is to then save that document to a new location (and do that for any and all documents that have been open during a crash), then close the document and go back to working on the original. It's like it doesn't register that it was closed during the force quit. I now have a trail of what I've termed "ghost documents." I never had any issues with SF8...this is all since the upgrade.

Just to be clear it's happening even without the Cinema Display attached?
Since a second monitor can impact the GPU I want to make sure these issues aren't GPU related.

If you both believe these are simply speed related (fast keystrokes causing the hang) please do fill out the form and state that. You will need to include your full system specs (SF version, macOS version, computer with attachments). ScreenFlow Support Form. Including the link to a visual example can help. It may involve certain keyboard keystroke functions or combinations in rapid succession for example.

  • CraigS The video I've attached in this thread is the same one I have already sent over with a ticket. In the same ticket, I have also attached a system report of my MacMini, as well as the note that this issue is specifically related to fast play / pause successions involving the space bar. I have also reported to your customer support colleague Abdul that I've seen this issue on both Mojave as well as Catalina, and that it is only occurring in ScreenFlow 9. This means that you should have all the required information already to chase this down.

  • ...quick follow up on that: I have a brand new MacBook Pro 16" with AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8GB graphics, and there I cannot for the life of me reproduce this issue. Even when I frenetically jump around the timeline, SF9 is rock solid. I DID disable dynamic graphics switching, so that only the Radeon Pro gets used instead of the Intel integrated graphics. So CraigS might actually be right after all suspecting that this issue must be GPU related...

Erica Gamet , can you tell us the specs of your Mac? Does it have a dedicated graphics card, or is it running from the Intel graphics? You can find out by clicking on Apple -> "About this Mac".

And if you enable this can you replicate the crashing?

    Like
  • CraigS I cannot test this unfortunately, because ScreenFlow won't allow the MacBook to switch to integrated graphics while SF is running. Do you perhaps have a MacBook that only has integrated graphics available for testing? I'm pretty sure now you'll be able to reproduce this problem then. Once again, this issue wasn't present before ScreenFlow 9...

Since such MacBook Pros are still quite common we should see if there are reports of this. We may not have any reports though.

If you post your case number I can investigate.

    Like
  • CraigS Case number would be #00681909. Please note that MacBook Pros without dedicated graphics should actually be the majority of those devices, the 13“ base models 2016-2019 all come without dedicated Radeon graphics. They all only have Intel’s integrated graphics.

Yet not seeing reports of the crashing from those. I've added your thoughts to our investigation FLOW-10239.

So far it may be limited to systems eGPU (and integrated graphics?)

    Like
  • CraigS correct. Keep in mind though that this issue would only affect FAST editors with integrated graphics. So that cuts down the amount of reports you can expect about this quite considerably.

Gregor Beyerle is this just using the mouse or are there any keyboard commands involved? Apple went through a keyboard redesign and I wonder if the response speed might be a factor.

  • CraigS this issue specifically involves the space bar key.

    Like
  • CraigS ...just to clarify, though - the issue is not that keys aren’t registering or anything. It is that quick successions of starting and stopping with the space bar key will cause ScreenFlow 9 to beachball indefinitely.

I'm thinking that a key might be generating multiple repeats when struck quickly and resulting in a hang. The keyboard type rather than the GPU might be the variable.
